I probably won’t buy anything with software in it.
I would like it to be possible next time we're about to buy a car, but I think it's going to be terribly hard. I haven't been looking close, but every new car I've recently been in has got something smart inside it that probably requires a SIM card and regular software updates.
Well, unless the chip shortage makes it mandatory. Be careful about what you wish for!

@loopback0 said in In other news today...:
While subscriptions for these features are dumb, a future owner being able to easily unlock with a one-off payment a feature the original buyer didn't pay for isn't terrible.
Hard disagree. The original owner already should’ve paid exactly zero dollars for it. If the hardware is too cheap to not put in, then don’t charge for not installing a crippling device. If the hardware isn’t free, don’t install it.

That's one way to look at it...
It'll be more if you buy a car and it then suddenly starts shutting down features "because you lack the necessary licenses on your personal driver account".
-
@JBert and that’s going to be exactly what happens. Give it a year for this shit to snowball.
-
@Applied-Mediocrity said in In other news today...:
@loopback0 Yes for pure software features, especially some fucking Apple/Google thing that's going to be discontinued or otherwise irrelevant in a couple years anyway. Nope if all the hardware is already there.
: Android Auto is a much better/less likely to be abandoned implementation of "project your GPS and music app into the screen and speakers of your car" than the manufacturer-speific solutions that preceded it.
Apple fans would presumably say the same of CarPlay.

Oh that's right, then just killed the App and converted it into Assistant.

Today, you think of Microsoft as a big deal, that it's just behind the FAANG companies on the stock market.
Did I miss a major event in the mid teens of this century? I’m pretty sure Microsoft was sitting on enough cash to buy out Google, Netflix and probably Facebook since about 2005. Apple and Amazon have been out of their reach for a while.
*edit probably not google but I'm sure they've being more significant than them for a while.

@Applied-Mediocrity it’s explicitly tagged opinion, which means it’s as valid as anything we might post here. But the reality is MS has been transitioning for a while to a services based future and a decent amount of Azure runs on Linux.
-
@Arantor That's not what concerns me. Opinions (much like many other articles Reg used to run) used to have some in-depth analysis instead of 3 paragraphs of regurgitating what everybody already knows, with a one line conclusion of what's already in the title.
I haven't paid much attention to what M$ is doing now, I'm still stuck with the old Framework and classic servers. I know there's WSL and Azure containers-something, and there's Linux somewhere. I don't feel any more informed after reading that piece. But I used to learn things from El Reg.
---MS has been transitioning
-
@Applied-Mediocrity ever since they dropped the “biting the hand that feeds IT” tagline they’ve been very much less interesting.
Some of that you can attribute to certain souls departing (e.g. Lester Haines, he of the PlayMobil in Space endeavours) taking some of its original latent cynicism away. But latterly I think it’s just practical awareness of what the “industry” has come to expect - attention spans are getting shorter, so shorter and less in depth articles are apparently more desirable. And in-depth is more effort for less reward these days, it’s all about the eyeballs or something.
I mostly skim for the occasional interesting article plus Dabbsy and BOFH these days.
-
@Arantor we probably should have stopped paying attention to them when faang when from a joke that hipsters don't know anything about IT pre-2015 to a quasi technical term.
-
@DogsB that would be about when I tuned out - and I’ve been reading since 2000.

facepalm
Android Auto, especially in the context of "things you can have optioned into your car when you buy it from the dealer," isn't that.
Android Auto is an interface to a screen and speakers that are physically built into your car. You plug in a recent Android phone and the apps show up on the screen and the sound comes out your speakers.
They changed the name of the "Android Auto for Phones" app because Real Android Auto is for phones too, and it was confusing to differentiate between the two if they had the same name.

That was originally an actual misprint, IIRC, showing that dyslexia should never have been a barrier to realising your dream of becoming a typesetter (though the almost total death of that as a profession is a different matter).

It didn't need to be a thing. It's Android for Auto without the Auto so it's Android? With an app that gives you the same stuff that you get on your phone but on your phone?
-
-
@loopback0 Exactly. I have a car without Android Auto, and whenever I need navigation or whatever, I just switch the car's audio input over to bluetooth and manually start Waze

Here's the leading entry full size:
John Quigley, the Republican commissioner for the Ulster County Board of Elections, said Rowan's design struck a nerve with voters.
"Somebody tweeted, this is how voters feel about politics right now, and I thought it was almost like the best way to summarize it. It sort of is exactly how we all feel about politics right now," he said.
Ehhh... Might as well be people picking the "wrong" option to get smug bastards to stop wearing these stickers, or they might of course just vote for the fun of it:
