I wish they'd use their already existing laws to stop extremist content before it can be recorded.
I would prefer Facebook, Google and Microsoft not have a standing army or munitions-loaded drones, thank you.
-
On a side note, I think "Your update murders children" deserves to be a meme.

It's extremely difficult to definitively separate extremist speech and political speech. Yes, you can easily separate the ends of the spectrum that are a long way from each other, but there's a real grey area between the two. It's vitally important that political speech be protected; suppression of that has been at the heart of a vast number of wrongs in the past.

The word "extremist" itself is already loaded. An extremely non-violent person is not the problem. The problem is "violentists".
-

Well, yes. And it's the right term for some of the violent nutjobs out there. (Yes, it's also prejudiced terminology to call them that. IDGAF.) But it's really hard to definitively draw the line between them and people calling for peaceful political solutions in all cases. We know that there must be a line in there, but where it is…
One of the starting points is to say that we shouldn't be either committing violence on others or directly and specifically speaking in favour of it. Except we know we can't draw the line there: the line has to be a bit further towards the extreme in order that society overall can have the power to sanction those who are highly inimical to it. But where must the line be then? I don't know, but I do know that this is one of the greatest political debates throughout the world, and the balance of opinion on this matter definitely shifts from time to time.

I think you missed my point. I don't mean calling violent people extreme is insulting to the violent people, I mean it's an inaccurate insult to the word "extreme".

I respectfully disagree. The violent for a cause most certainly are often extreme, but they are still on the spectrum of political discourse. Just at the end marked ultra-viole
n
t. Saying that they are not on it at all is denying reality. This sort of denial caused decades of pain in some parts of the world; for example, it wasn't until the terrorists were accepted as being connected to the political process that the real road to peace in Northern Ireland was followed.
Doesn't mean that I want to negotiate with every random piece of scum out there. I just think that it's important to keep peaceful options available as well. It takes two
to tangosides to choose peace.
-
I think you missed his point. I think @chozang is saying that ultra-pacifists are also extremists (of a rather different sort), but nobody uses that label for them, and that using the label for one sort but not the other is an inaccurate use of the label.
Edit: Since he (?) liked this post, I conclude that this is a reasonably accurate statement of his point.

Yes. I would go even further, and say that there are many extremes, and that being extreme about something is not necessarily a bad thing. For example, I think most TDWTF denizens would agree that being an extremely good programmer is a good thing. "Extremist" seems like the type of thing people sometimes say to avoid considering the points being raised.

Well why do youtube urls still not include the fucking title? Haven't they figured that out yet?
I'm sure they have figured it out. And they figure that if you DO know the video title before clicking on the link, then that may result in fewer clicks.
It's very intentional. And since YouTube is google, they don't have to worry about SEOing their links

Can I request an emoji :rawhide: to be created used to indicate the finding of a particular post in a topic?

What is supposed to represent?
I've always thought it was a granny flat built above a garage. Looks as if granny has opened one curtain but left the other closed.
I think it means "Save" because you're saving granny from going into an old people's home.

Grampa, please tell us again the old fairy tales when you could talk over great distances and even could see pictures of other persons and when there was eltricicy and moving cat pictures and not everything was radioactive!

I just realized that when it comes time for me to share my favorite movies with the next generation, one of my favorites, "UHF", will make literally zero sense:
- Analog broadcast stations?
- Pre-planned, scheduled programming?
- Why didn't they just set up a Patreon for crowdfunding?
- half the problems solved with cell phones
- WTF movies are being parodied? Rambo? Conan? Indiana Jones? Let me show you a real action movie, Grandpa...
For fuck's sake, the other year, The Twinkie Crisis nearly reached DEFCON 1-- and if that'd happened, the next generation wouldn't understand the joke about the Twinkie Wiener Sandwich!
Filed Under: I just realized I don't know how to spell wiener.

"The anti-upskirt click!"
Bam, I just named it.
