Context would be useful…
-
And here I was expecting that it was someone complaining about that happening rather than just you noticing it.
-
Or perhaps it's trying to find a date.
-
And here I was expecting that it was someone complaining about that happening rather than just you noticing it.
Yeah, rather anti-climactic. I thought it was funny when I saw it though.
-
Context would be useful…
Well, I left out the context on purpose. But it is an RMA site of a well-known hardware manufacturer. But to add more WTFery to it, there was also this:
But after submitting it, they put a $1,200 hold on my credit card. Fucking bastards.
Yeah, I get it. They need collateral to make sure they get their hardware back, and it is not an actual charge as they will release the hold and no charge will go through. But that is still $1,200 I am not able to access until they get their hardware back for shit that was DOA.
-
They can't put a hold on your card without informing you; you should complain to VISA.
-
That is crappy. in my experience, whenever a manufacturer has held full value as collateral, they at least cross-ship the new one before receiving the old one.
-
They can't put a hold on your card without informing you; you should complain to VISA.
they did warn you. that's the whole "collateral only" business right there in the screen shot.
-
They can't put a hold on your card without informing you
Tell that to every rental car company I have ever used, every hotel, etc. Some of them let you know, but most do not. Also, it is a debit card so I am not sure if the rules are different in that case?

They are cross-shipping.
-

I've never been to one that didn't let me know. Hell, the last time I rented a car, the guy informed me like 4 times, I was like, "yeah I know, just shut up and do it".
Also, it is a debit card so I am not sure if the rules are different in that case?
AFAIK, credit cards and debit cards are treated identically,
-
They are cross-shipping.
Then it's just business as usual. They aren't doing you any favors - it really boils down to you buying another one that will get refunded when they get yours back, but they also aren't screwing you.
-
Yeah, I know. I expected it, and when I saw that on the website I immediately though, "Yeah right." I have had it happen before. But they really should delineate what they are going to do, as for a lot of people that would be a major problem...
-
See, it's things like this that make developers paranoid of using random strings.
Your URL was "FfuCk_", now my children have PTSD and I'm suing your company for $5M in emotional damages.
-
See, it's things like this that make developers paranoid of using random strings.
Pretty much. But then, when developers see them they realize it was just luck of the draw, chuckle, and make a joke of it on a forum.
-
Evil idea: Every million page loads, use "your-computer-is-trying-to-kill-you" as the random string.
-
-
Or perhaps it is British and just quit smoking?
Or perhaps it's just random, because computers are (naturally) oblivious to stuff like this.
I mean, you aren't one of those people who have major panic attacks because they get assigned the next user ID after 14665 are you? (Oh! The horror, Oh! The pathos!)
-
Or perhaps it's just random
Used to have to login to server software that would give random passwords. Certain combinations were skipped.
Half the password was random, and half user typed in. Random part was after user part.Random part would also skip any strings starting with "uck"
Of course the password was in a password box, so people would see ********.
I guess the owner of the company couldn't stomach someone using curse words as passwords, even though he would never see or know that.
-
I guess the owner of the company couldn't stomach someone using curse words as passwords, even though he would never see or know that.
Next idea: If I ever implement such a system, make curse words a requirement. That is more my style.
-
A hold isn't an actual charge.
-
I know, but they still have to inform you BEFORE they do it.
-
I know, but they still have to inform you BEFORE they do it.
I am not so sure that they have to. All they are doing is making sure that if they need to charge you, they are able to. I absolutely could be wrong about that. And I absolutely believe that it is good form and common courtesy to do so. But I do not believe it is a requirement.
As an example, I frequently get fuel as Costco. They always put a hold on my account as soon as I swipe my card and enter my PIN. ~$100 IIRC. After I am done, they charge my card for the fuel. Until midnight, there is $100 not available from my account. No big deal, but it does happen. No notice of them doing so.
-
Using a debit card is TRWTF, but I think you've discussed that previously :)
-
-
AFAIK, credit cards and debit cards are treated identically,
True, except for things like "some car rental places will not take debit cards". If they take 'em, tho, they treat 'em the same.
-
No notice of them doing so.
Really? Pumps usually have a sticker warning about it.
-
True, except for things like "some car rental places will not take debit cards".
I have yet to run in to one. And they do not treat them the same, they tend to put a large hold on your card.
-
I have yet to run in to one
Maybe they stopped? I know some of them did 10-15 years ago, because there was a time when I wanted to rent a car but didn't have a credit card, and had to hunt to find one that did. No debit card, and they'd put a $300 hold on your credit card. I want to say Enterprise in particular did it, but I could be wrong.
-
I know some of them did 10-15 years ago
Yeah. I have not run into that for a while though.
-
I've never owned a credit card in my life, and I've never had any problems renting a car.
I've actually heard that little bit of urban legend ("you can't rent a car with a debit card") from other people, but I'm not sure if it was once true or never true and people are just confused.
-
It is not entirely urban legend. I ran in to that ~10 years ago. I just went to the next counter and got a car from their competitor. I have not had it happen since and I have not had a credit card for 10 years.
-
Yeah. I have not run into that for a while though.
It's been at least 10 years since I needed to rent a car, myself.
-
I've actually heard that little bit of urban legend ("you can't rent a car with a debit card") from other people
I heard it from actual people I called at an actual rental place. Maybe you didn't run across the same company. IIRC I'm about 8 years older than you, so it's possible it stopped before you ran across the practice.
-
I rent cars a dozen times a year, always with a debit card. Have not had issues for a long time, but I do remember that time years ago running in to what you said.
They just put a big hold on your card.
-
I've actually heard that little bit of urban legend ("you can't rent a car with a debit card") from other people
I have heard a ton of those.
- You can rent a car with a debit card
- You can't rent a hotel room with a debit card.
- You can't get an airplane ticket with a debit card.
- You can't buy a house unless you have a credit card.
- The list goes on and on.
They are all bullshit.
-
Yah. Like I said, I've never had a credit card in my life. I think it came up once, when I was buying a house, the bank checking my credit rating was like, "hm, usually people have credit cards" but the rating itself was fine so. In the house I go.
-
When I bought the house we are in now, I was to the point that I did not have a credit rating. The credit score report said the most likely reason for this was that I am deceased.
I was still able to buy the house. FICO can go fuck themselves.
-
Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, I think the credit agencies are 100% unfair and plain CRUEL to people who purposefully do not sign up for credit because they don't trust their own ability to not overspend.
Which is me: I don't want easy credit. This is because I'm responsible, which is what you're supposed to be measuring!
In any case, when I bought a house I had a bunch of credit history from random shit and it was enough. I remember one item was like a phone bill I paid every month in college that was somehow on there.
-
you can't rent a car with a debit card
As a result of occasional business travel, I'm a member of Hertz's preferred renter program. Last time my card expired, the web form to submit updated info said that debit cards were not accepted. IIRC, I tried using my debit card number anyway, and it rejected it. This was a year or so ago.
-
You shouldn't do those things without credit IMO. The process for getting your money back when they fuck up is painful when it's real money on the line and not hypothetical future money. If someone takes five hundred dollars and then didn't have a room for you after all, you now don't have that five hundred for the three weeks it takes to get a refund, which makes it hard to pay another hotel. Five hundred on a credit card you can dispute doesn't impact your actual cash flow until after you're safe in a new hotel and can figure shit out.
-
You shouldn't do those things without credit IMO.
I don't do credit. The only loan we have is our mortgage.
-
How are you going to find out if someone is going to actually pay something off or not if you don't give them a chance to pay something off?
How about you give me $1k I'll be sure to pay it back Tuesday.
-
How are you going to find out if someone is going to actually pay something off or not if you don't give them a chance to pay something off?
Here's a crazy idea: Pay it off when you buy it.
-
Here's a crazy idea, Get 1-5% cash back and do that.
I don't buy anything with a credit card I can't immediately pay for in cash.
-
After I am done, they charge my card for the fuel. Until midnight, there is $100 not available from my account. No big deal, but it does happen. No notice of them doing so.
I think they're supposed to release that hold when your payment posts. Maybe they have a bug? (Now who would care about a bug that results in a hold on the customer's account? )
True, except for things like "some car rental places will not take debit cards". If they take 'em, tho, they treat 'em the same.
Enterprise will, at least here in Orlando. I was just discussing it with them today. But to do so, they want to see paychecks and utility statements.
I used a credit card; this was just idle conversation following a minor by their national call center. When I called the national center, they told me there would be a $200 hold on my card; then they sent the reservation to the local branch with $100 on the paper. So then the local branch calls me to tell me, "Ummm... sorry, it will be $200: is that okay?"
That was compounded by the national call center operator being "Tiffany", and the branch rep was "Tiffany." I knew about the branch Tiffany (because I've done business there before) so when I talked to the national, I thought I was talking to the branch office Tiffany. Naturally I'm all like, "Why are you calling me again? I just talked to you, like three minutes ago." Not so much.
They are all bullshit.
But not using a credit card can force you to jump through other hoops.
You shouldn't do those things without credit IMO.
Especially purchase things like airline tickets, because there are also other procedures that can help you out. Back in 198x, I bought an airline ticket and, 3 days before the trip, the airline went bankrupt. Called it in to the credit card company, they refunded the charge and filed with the bankruptcy court, so I didn't have to deal with the charge or the bankruptcy.
-
I think they're supposed to release that hold when your payment posts. Maybe they have a bug? (Now who would care about a bug that results in a hold on the customer's account? )
They do, it just doesn't post for a few days, meanwhile they continue with the hold until it posts.
-
Enterprise will, at least here in Orlando. I was just discussing it with them today. But to do so, they want to see paychecks and utility statements.
That has to be an Orlando thing? I have recently gotten cars from Enterprise with nothing more than a hold on my debit card.
-
You can't buy a house unless you have a credit card.
TRWTF is people using a credit card to buy a house
-
I don't buy anything with a credit card I can't immediately pay for in cash.
I don't trust myself to do that.
It's more responsible for me to know my own limitations and not have access to easy credit in the first place.
