Another tale from an interview (that sucked so now we're arguing politics again)
-
You know what I love about the Internet?
USians arguing politics. Everywhere I go.
Now, now, we've had some Poles arguing politics too, courtesy of @Gaska .
-
That was one thread. I can deal with one thread.
My complaint is not even limited to this place.
-
One thread about Polish politics on English forum, with three(?) Polish users, is still pretty high IMO. And there are thousands of Polish forums, with thousands of users each - do you think they're that different from English forums in this matter?
-
I think you can break it down into two groups:
- people actually doing politics
- people shouting at each other over the internet about politics
Probably not much overlap betweeen the two...
-

Statistical anomaly.
And there are thousands of Polish forums, with thousands of users each - do you think they're that different from English forums in this matter?
Probably not. But I can just avoid Polish forums then. But I kinda like YouTube. Sometimes Reddit. I even click on Tumblr links at times (because people who link them visit the sane parts of it. I know, I was surprised those exist too). Or any damned semi-popular platform that has a comment section.
INB4 YouTube comments section - sometimes I do scroll through, yes. But by 5th comment it's Obama this and Republicans that. I don't even have the chance to reach what is considered "YouTube bad" half the time.
-
Statistical anomaly.
You can't say it's statistical anomaly given such a small small sample. Unless you mean Polish users being here is statistical anomaly itself - in which case, there's nothing to talk about to start with. But I can just avoid Polish forums then.
As if you were visiting any...
-
You can't say it's statistical anomaly given such a small small sample.
I'll get back to you after more US politics flamewars arise. What would you consider a decent sample size? Because we'll get there, I assure you (as long as you're realistic enough and consider the membership count).
Unless you mean Polish users being here is statistical anomaly itself - in which case, there's nothing to talk about to start with.
Same as me I guess. And I wasn't the one complaining about that one instance, you brought it up.
As if you were visiting any...
No, I wasn't. Can you give me a good reason to do so? Join a community of people who I don't share much in common with, just on a whim? Maybe if it was a Polish programming forum. Or a Polish Red Dwarf fan club forum. But I think translating everything through Google Translate would be a pain.
-
I'll get back to you after more US politics flamewars arise.
Are you analyzing "frequency of US politics flamewars compared to frequency of other countries' politics flamewars on English forum", or "frequency of given country's politics flamewars compared to userbase from that country"? Because analyzing the former makes very little to no sense, and for the latter, US politics flamewars are irrelevant.Same as me I guess. And I wasn't the one complaining about that one instance, you brought it up.

Well, you brought real science into this topic. I was just making a casual comment. No, I wasn't. Can you give me a good reason to do so?
No, I can't. Hence my comment - there's no reason you would ever want to visit a Polish forum, yet you made it sound like you have interest in some of them (avoiding implies active effort - as opposite to simply not visiting them).Join a community of people who I don't share much in common with, just on a whim? Maybe if it was a Polish programming forum.
Actually, I know a very good one. Quite popular, given its niche target (game developers). Many experienced people there, each being a fanboy of one language or another - which results in frequent and surprisingly sensible arguments about which way of doing something is the best. Very few inside jokes - which makes it welcoming to new members. The only problem is that it's Polish.
-

I'm analyzing "frequency of US politics flamewars on the Internet, any part of Internet, as compared to just not bringing up that politician X used the song I'm listening to on YouTube in his campaign ad and, seriously, fuck that guy's fiscal policy".
Well, you brought real science into this topic. I was just making a casual comment.
Asking me not to analyze shit using scientific principles is like asking a YouTube troll not to commit logical fallacies.
Actually, I know a very good one.
Dickhorse broke your link btw. Might even scroll through, though I suspect Google Translate will butcher it to hell and back.

I'm analyzing "frequency of US politics flamewars on the Internet, any part of Internet, as compared to just not bringing up that politician X used the song I'm listening to on YouTube in his campaign ad and, seriously, fuck that guy's fiscal policy".
And apparently, it is somehow connected to Poland.Asking me not to analyze shit using scientific principles is like asking a YouTube troll not to commit logical fallacies.
Oh, I'm all for scientific analyses of random bullshit. Just, make your science right.Dickhorse broke your link btw.
Fixed. @discoursebot

And apparently, it is somehow connected to Poland.
You brought it up. Personally, I give as much shit about it as I do about Uzbekistan. (My Polish overlords told me I have to say that!)
Oh, I'm all for scientific analyses of random bullshit. Just, make your science right.
There wasn't much to work with. Also, you brought up that one discussion that was on this forum and claimed my dataset is based on that, when I clearly stated:
You know what I love about the Internet?
USians arguing politics. Everywhere I go.
In short:
-
You brought it up.
@Maciejasjmj said:Now, now, we've had some Poles arguing politics too
@Onyx said:That was one thread. I can deal with one thread.
Yep, totally me.There wasn't much to work with.
Then you should know that any kind of statistical analysis, even saying that it's statistically insignificant, is wrong.I clearly stated:
If you didn't notice, I was NOT replying to this particular post, but the one where you actually referred to Polish flamewars.

Ok, you didn't bring it up, you latched onto it. My response to that was "Meh." just in a few more words, and no one seemed to have a problem with that except you.
Then you should know that any kind of statistical analysis, even saying that it's statistically insignificant, is wrong.
Well excuse my French. How's this instead:
That was one thread. I can deal with one thread.
Oh, sorry, that wasn't enough. Ummmm... let's try it like this: given how much US politics I read about all around the freaking place, my reaction to that one single thread was:

If you didn't notice, I was NOT replying to this particular post, but the one where you actually referred to Polish flamewars.
Sorry, I buttumed that you read my post that @Maciejasjmj replied to. Because, you know, context. I'd accept the "whoops, sorry, didn't see that one". But latching onto "but I clicked this Reply button, not one of the other 50" is
-
...what exactly are you guys arguing now?
-
@Gaska seems to be upset that I wasn't annoyed by that one Polish politics thread you had and is trying to prove it's actually either more important or more annoying than 'muricans doing it. I think.
Personally, I'm just not letting my words getting twisted. His panties seem to be twisted though, for reasons unknown to me.

From the link: I'm pretty sure the only good answer to "trunk-first vs branch-first in svn" is "who gives a shit? Seriouusly, whatever you're already doing is fine, as long as you're using VC."

Seriously though, you seem to have quite low standards.

I added and deleted the word "properly" a few times when composing that, but ultimately decided it was implied by the word "using" ;)

That is evil... now I feel compeled to do it on a repository I'm working on

I'll get back to you after more US politics flamewars arise.
I really prefer the more abstract ones. Then I can point out to foreigners how stupid they are, too. We shouldn't be excluding people, you know.
-
How's this instead
This is perfectly okay.Ummmm... let's try it like this: given how much US politics I read about all around the freaking place, my reaction to that one single thread was:
If it was anything else, I'd say you're crazy. But no matter how much you emphasize you don't give a fuck, it doesn't change the fact your statistical analysis was wrong.Sorry, I buttumed that you read my post that @Maciejasjmj replied to.
I did. How does it change anything?Because, you know, context.
The context was that you're okay with Polish flamewars because there aren't that many of them.@Gaska seems to be upset that I wasn't annoyed by that one Polish politics thread you had and is trying to prove it's actually either more important or more annoying than 'muricans doing it. I think.
Not at all. I was upset because you ran statistical analysis on such a small sample.
-
I'd say you're crazy
Yes.
But no matter how much you emphasize you don't give a fuck, it doesn't change the fact your statistical analysis was wrong.
You sure? See:
I did. How does it change anything?
Because it changes the sample size. I didn't say TDWTF, I said the Internet. I just accepted changing the context to TDWTF later because it's still n threads about US politics (no, CBA to count) vs. 1 thread about any other country (incidentally, Poland).
The context was that you're okay with Polish flamewars because there aren't that many of them.
Almost... up a bit... up a bit... there! See? the Internet. Not TDWTF.
Not at all. I was upset because you ran statistical analysis on such a small sample.
I mentioned upthread that this includes Youtube, Reddit, Tumblr and almost any other platform that features comments under the sun. I'd quote it, but that doesn't seem to be helping much.
-
Because it changes the sample size.
But also changes the .I didn't say TDWTF, I said the Internet. I just accepted changing the context to TDWTF later because it's still n threads about US politics (no, CBA to count) vs. 1 thread about any other country (incidentally, Poland).
It sounds like you're only considering the English-speaking part of Internet. That's racist. *ding*I mentioned upthread that this includes Youtube, Reddit, Tumblr and almost any other platform that features comments under the sun.
Do you see how all of those sites are English-speaking? That's double racist. *ding* *ding*
-
I think the thread has pretty much derailed away. Polish politics, srsly? Maybe we should invade a Polish forum (preferably a Radio Maryja focused one) and discuss fucked-up (or not) IT job interviews there, with X-rated language and shit...

I'm sorry, I didn't hear that over all the Croatian in the background. I will, however, continue to type in English for the convenience of other forum members.

Croatian YouTube contains only dog videos. I need to visit the one everyone else uses to get my daily cat fix.
I think the thread has pretty much derailed away.
Good.
Polish politics, srsly?
Ah, but we're arguing whether we should argue about it, not actual politics. Which is a nice change.

To jest rasistą?

Oh, right, this thread, wanted to respond with like 7 paragraphs of text elaborating on points like I would when programming. You know, explaining that 2 + 2 is, in fact, 4.
Then I realized I'm arguing against someone that's not willing to concede a single point or admit that he misunderstood my post and keeps shifting goalposts around so much I'm considering getting them a passport. Because, you know, that's the thing we like the most about science, the way it's infullible.
So, I'm out. You "win", I guess, Lord @Gaska, master of sciences, may Aristotle be with you, always.
-
it's infullible.
So something like this?
-
To jest rasistowskie?
FTFYThen I realized I'm arguing against someone that's not willing to concede a single point
So far, you've tried to make me concede by:- misusing statistics
- shifting blame
- derailing
- declaring the argument pointless
- citing wrong facts
- being ambiguous and then calling me on misunderstanding you
- misreading my posts and then replying to what I didn't say
- flattening the definition of Internet to just the sites you visit
- emoticons
- memes
- time travel.
And I can only be made to concede by presenting facts that contradict my point or pointing out logical fallacies in what I say. Too bad you didn't try one of these.
-
This is complicated. What are you guys even arguing about anymore?

I'm eating chocolate. Chocolate is the best.

You're insane. Chocolate is the worst, because time travel!
