They have a language where P is represented by 3, and H is represented by P?
Not that I'm aware of. The 'P' is an R sound and the '3' is Z.
The Latin letters are the same layout as a 'normal' rightpondian keyboard, and don't correspond to the Squirrelic letters on the same keys - indeed it would be hard to do that, because they have letters that don't directly correspond to any Latin letter, like 'space invader' which is Zh.

Your accountants don't have fancy pink desk calculators?
With printers built-in?
click-clack-clack-click-WHINE-CLACK-WHINE-CLACK
SHUT UP! Just get something that has a fucking MEMORY if you need to go back and look.
Oh, no, I'm sorry, you just typed it into your computer afterwards anyway!
With papertape.
Yeah, that thing. Hazo'd. But still annoyed enough to post.
-
Which keyboard is that and where did you get it?
I designed it on http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/, but I didn't like the board very much so I moved the keys to my trusty Filco.
I just wanted a keyboard that would really make people say WTF when they try to use my computer. I posted about it on my site back when I got it: http://www.superjer.com/forum/my_new_insane_keyboard.php

Very cool, I'll pay them a visit if anything ever happens to my Das Keyboard.

http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/,
..... RAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY DID THAT SITE POP UP AN UNDISMISSABLE INTERACTIVE ORDERING TUTORIAL WHEN I CLICKED ONE OF THEIR PRODUCTS!
I JUST WANTED TO SEE THE TECHNICAL SPECS NOT BE SHOWN HOW TO GIVE THEM MONEY BECAUSE I ALREADY KNOW HOW TO DO THAT AND I CANT ESCAPE THEIR FUCKING TUTORIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
</poor imitation of blakeyrage>
-
I had the opposite rage: why isn't there a brief, concise "How ordering works" page I can link my friend to?!
-
well despite my rage i find myself thinking "If i didn't already have a nice mechanical keyboard * I'd be ordering one of these tonight."
*: it's a nice mechanical keyboard but it's not a *great* mechanical keyboard

My laptop has a calculator button and I use it all the time.
Often I end up with 4 or 5 calculator windows open because I switch to another program and then I just press the button again rather than switching back to calculator.

[funny thing I can't think of a witty repsonse to]
Of all the times for my wit to fail me…

Must resist temptation to buy a purple keyboard… need to save the money for all those lovely comic book variants…Plus I quite like my Logitech G15
-
what manner of browser did you use to get that? because that was not on my screen.
/me switches to incognito
nope. still not there.
-
I'm seeing it on Firefox, IE and Chrome.
Windows 8.1, 1366x768.
-
I keep a TI-85 on my desk.
The programmer's version of the accountant's 10-key.

hmm... possibly screen resolution related?
(windows 7 1920x1080, chrome 64bit, lacking interest to experiment further)
-
Tested in Firefox latest and Chrome latest (32 & 64 bit) in two different resolutions (1680×1050 and 1280×1024), and I always saw the Close button.
Interestingly, IE11 64-bit doesn't show the tutorial at all…
All on Windows 8.1 btw.
Edit: Spotted an @accalia

it's a mystery.....
just as their decision to require you to ckick the close button rahter than implementing a standard lightbox where clicking the background or pressing ESC would dismiss the dialog.
-

The programmer's version of the accountant's 10-key.
Yes! My daughter has started using mine for schoolwork.
-
Tempting... tell them to call me back when they figure out how to make a properly shaped Enter key.
-
Does that actually exist? Can I buy it? It looks wonderful.
-
windows 7 1920x1080, chrome 64bit,
Win 8, same resolution, same browser.
No popup thing at all.lacking interest to experiment further)

only inferior shitty PC computers even have the concept of "numlock". Which is stupid.
I thought the purpose of
NumLock
was to facilitate arguments about whether it should be turned on (and ignored), or turned off (and ignored)...
-
I thought the purpose of
NumLock
was to facilitate arguments about whether it should be turned on (and ignored), or turned off (and ignored)...It made sense with the Model F, which only had 83/84 keys (depending on variant), but it's not made any sense at all from the Model M onwards, i.e., since 1986, since the keys that were overloaded onto the keypad (cursor movement, etc) gained their own independent life.
-
Does that actually exist? Can I buy it? It looks wonderful.
It does! You can't have mine. I guess you could design your own and get it from WASD (see my later post).
-
-
So... I went to click around anyway and found out you can get them with proper key shapes. So, went to designer and...
No US layout? REALLY?
-
No US layout? REALLY?
I thought the blank one might be a close approximation from the schematic but the photo reverted to the stupid enter key shape. Also, who needs two \ keys?
Edit: you want the 104 and not the 105.
-
stupid enter key shape
Also, who needs two \ keys?
I'm gonna assume you mean the one next to left shift? On QWERTZ, and what I map it to, it's < / >. And I like it that way, since I fiddle with HTML a lot and it's convenient. I actually have that key on my QWERTZ keyboard and when I set it to US it does get mapped to < / >, at least on Linux.
In any case, the solution seems to be to use their custom layout option. Download the file for 104 key / 105 key layout and fiddle. The layer marked as UK QWERTY seems to be what we all call US layout.
-
The layer marked as UK QWERTY seems to be what we all call US layout.
The UK layout has differences in " @ ~ and #, along with extra £ € broken pipe and angle thing (last two aren't even on Android UK keyboard, but it has ~`|•√π÷׶∆€¥$¢^°={}\©®™℅[],<>. with things like ♪§→≈ not hard to find plus emoji button 👍). Plus the shape of the enter key and small left shift.
I got a new computer at work with a keyboard in the UK style: hated it so much I went and retrieved my old keyboard. I probably could get used to the left shift and use that extra key for something useful but the enter key is a deal breaker.
-
but the enter key is a deal breaker.
Same here. But we're talking about the different version. I want the big one, makes it easier for me to fire zee missilez!
Personal preference is all. I'll stick with my 105-key, thanks. The main thing is I found the easiest way to get the layout I want:
Just have to change the glyphs on the "second ". Not a big deal.
-
I want the big one, makes it easier for me to fire zee missilez!
My all time favourite keyboard though would take the \ key and move it to the top row and make the backspace small. That would make the enter key even bigger and satisfy us both.
Personal preference is all
Indeed
Just have to change the glyphs on the "second ". Not a big deal.
I couldn't find that layout, but I am on my phone so have limited browsability!
FWIW the close button on the overlay did appear for me, with another overlay under it.
-
I couldn't find that layout
Me neither. You can download presets for custom layouts in either svg or cdr format. They come with a bunch of layers, some of them not available in the online configurator it seems.
-
I recall one of my earliest keyboards actually had a 'huge enter', consisting of the space occupied by both the enter and backslash keys on the 104/105 layouts. I think backspace was smaller, but don't recall, and I don't own that keyboard anymore.
-
I thought the purpose of NumLock was to facilitate arguments about whether it should be turned on (and ignored)
Obviously you turn it on to see if the keyboard is plugged in. And Capslock is there to find out if the PC hung itself because the Numlock-key is too far away.
One of the keyboards I used for a long time had stupid function keys... like a "Sleepmode"-key right next to esc. Whoever thought of that needs to get slapped with a cluebat.
Filed Under: My current keyboard doesn't have that anymore but still... argh
-
"Sleepmode"-key right next to esc. Whoever thought of that needs to get slapped with a cluebat.
Oh god. I had one of those keyboards. For the longest time, I thought my PC had a buggy OS and was shutting itself down by itself at random times...
-
Obviously you turn it on to see if the keyboard is plugged in.
When plugging my work laptop into its docking station, the Num Lock LED is my indication that Windows has finally decided to recognize that it now has an external keyboard and mouse attached. Sometimes this happens instantly; sometimes I'll CtrlAltDelpasswordEnter on autopilot, only to discover that nothing happened because Windows still hasn't noticed the keyboard. Drum fingers on desktop while mentally humming the Jeopardy theme and staring at the LED... Finally, try again.
-
had a 'huge enter', consisting of the space occupied by both the enter and backslash keys on the 104/105 layouts
I just found mine. It has the old style keyboard connector and is without windows keys. I really need to get rid of it. I took a photo with my phone (complete with wooden table) but just realised I don't have an easy way to strip exif data at the moment...
One of the keyboards I used for a long time had stupid function keys... like a "Sleepmode"-key right next to esc. Whoever thought of that needs to get slapped with a cluebat.
I once had a keyboard which is definitely destroyed and no longer with us which had those keys between the arrows and insert/delete/etc block. Way too easy to accidentally hit. They got removed!
Wtfingly, this keyboard also had quick access and "media keys". I remember installing the drivers: each key appeared in the task list as a separate process and it used a lot of memory. I don't remember how much but it was very significant. This was on windows 98 so would have been circa 2000.

-
No US layout? REALLY?
ZQSD??? No thank you. I'm a gamer, and apparently gamers are American.
-
AZERTY? Took a quick look, looks like you can use for programming. But I use bog-standard US QWERTY usually. Just what I switched to to avoid the horrors of QWERTZ. Might as well switched to UK, or AZERTY, but now it's kinda pointless to switch again.
-
turn it on to see if the keyboard is plugged in.
s/turn it on/mash the button repeatedly and see if the LED blinks/g
At least for the wireless USB keyboard that I have that seems to insist on using NumLock as its "I'm disconnected" indicator light...
-
wireless usb?
Can't laptops/towers just start having bluetooth?
-
Don't most laptops have bluetooth these days?
Ours all have it sort of disabled by some silly policy, but it's there.
I like wired keyboards and mice, so it's not a problem.
-
Bluetooth has some problems. It's fine for keyboards/mice, but for audio I'd still go for "proper" wireless if you want to use it a lot. You can't have stereo audio and microphone at the same time.
I bought my Bluetooth headset knowing that limitation because it was more important to me that I can connect it to my phone as well, But for gaming + Teamspeak and/or Skype I just leave it in stereo mode and use the built-in microphone. It's fine for phone calls, but you can feel the audio suffering on Skype alone, not to mention gaming.
-
Can't laptops/towers just start having bluetooth?
Well, given that this keyboard is the physical interface for a tower from 2003......... (it's an old Dell desktop I use as an SSH/file server)
-
Just what I switched to to avoid the horrors of QWERTZ.
Other than Z (and presumably Y) being in the wrong place, are there additional horrors which make QWERTZ intolerable, or is that on its own enough?

See: brackets.

And \.
