PfMS discussion that changed to a religion discussion

I think I got a Google ad for a site that was translated to English by one of @accalia's bots...
"Pandora FMS has a large amount of features, making it a new generation software which discovers all the monitoring issues that your organization may need."
Yeesh.
You can even play buzzword bingo with the front page!

Pandora FMS
Pandora's box was Not Good. I do not understand a company wanting to associate their product with that. While Πανδώρα means all-gifted or all-giving, which is good, the most common association with the name is her box, which contained all the evils of the world. I suppose if your product really is evil, it might be appropriate, but it's not generally desirable to associate your product or service with evil if you want people to use it.

what? you expect marketdroids to know history?
although that does explain why my first lazer printer gave me so much trouble (i named her pandora because she was very much box shaped and that made me giggle)

Mythology, not history, but you do have a point; expecting marketdroids to know anything is likely to result in unmet expectations.
P.S.: s/lazer/laser/ — Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
INB4 off-color joke about stimulated emission.

Just tell JW that heaven is already full, so they don't have good end-game material.
Tell Mormons that you already have your own planet, but Pluto was downgraded to dwarf-planet and so you're not interested in what humans have to say anymore.
-
You guys know that if you tell them you're happy with your religion and you'd prefer they not come back, they won't, right?
If they do at some point in the future, then the thing to do would be to call the closest Kingdom Hall or Mormon equivalent and complain.
-

QFT.
they may still drop by on occasion after you ask them not to, but it will only ever be on accident (they keep very good records). In the ten years since i politely asked the local group not to visit our house as part of their usual rounds (i forget how i phrased it but it was phrased so that it was very specific to their talking to the community about converting visits) they've only stopped by twice for that particular visit abd both times have been extremely apologetic when i pointed it out to them. (one was because a shrubbery had grown and obscured my house number, and the other was they had mistranscribed my house number from the central registry to their no not visit list for their trip)
very nice people in general, and while i'd prefer not that they not try and convert me (i am happy with my religion) i'm happy to have them around.
-
I do just that.
But it's a process, since you have to run down the gambit of local churches (by denomination). It took about 2 years of a visit every other month.
I still occasionally get a visitor, but I just keep telling them the same thing. I don't mind their visits.
-
-
somehow i suspect running the gambit is more fun. ;-)
-
Ok, that's a very ugly word that just emphasizes my southern drawl.
I need a synonym.
-
-
I don't mind if I can simply go "I'm not interested, thanks" and they go away.
The (quite rare now) ones who insist on pushing their message/leaflet are the irritating ones.
-
I would like to know their success rate.
I mean, they have to be doing it for a reason.I've found I'm more successful at "proselytizing" if I just behave how I claim I would be behaving if I do what I say I should be doing.
I mean, my beliefs naturally make their way into conversation by making note of things, or remarking on situations, or simply just saying that I'll pray for people.
Actively going door to door, or person to person, with a sales pitch hasn't really given me anything positive to take home.
-

I usually just say, "No, thanks," and that's that. Doesn't happen very often, though.
The (quite rare now) ones who insist on pushing their message/leaflet are the irritating ones.
I figure it's easier to take one and thank them and put it in the garbage than draw them into a conversation about why I don't really want one.
-
If they become too aggressive, I just go like.
"Oh SHIT!!!!! The iron!!!"
And then close the door.
-
I just say no thanks and close the door, but same principle.
-
It's for those rare cases where they somehow didn't recognize the first and second literally spoken "no".
-
Their comprehension is not really my problem once the door is closed. I mean, I don't wait for a response when I close it at that point.
-
wonders what reaction I would get if I said "Allah Akbar" to them
-
-
My favorite story — I've never had the nerve to try this myself — was by a nudist who very politely and, IIRC, sincerely invited them to come in and discuss their beliefs. They practically ran away screaming.
-
they not try and convert me
Again, for people who don't know, all you have say is "I'm happy with my religion and I'd prefer you not contact me". I have family who are JWs, and I got this directly from them.
I've never understood the rabid hatred of their visits in some quarters. It's not as if they're rude, and if they keep coming to talk to you it's because you haven't asked them not to.
-
But it's a process, since you have to run down the gambit of local churches (by denomination). It took about 2 years of a visit every other month.
Interesting, because other than JWs and Mormons I don't know who does it, so I would've expected you to only get a couple of visits total, if you asked 'em to stop.
-
-
a conversation about why I don't really want one.
Heh. You don't need to. They don't care. Most people don't seem to know you have to actually ask them not to come back, or, obviously, that they will honor that request.
-
Again, all you have say is
... just checking but.... you did read the paragraph immediately preceeding the one you quoted?
-
ust checking but
Oh, I wasn't specifically replying to you. I guess I could've been clearer. I will edit.
-
Oh, I wasn't specifically replying to you.
i was relatively sure that would be the case but i thought it prudent to check.
-
other than JWs and Mormons I don't know who does it
Most of what I get are various flavors of evangelical and baptist. But JWs and Mormons are the ones that have things specifically about doing it (as well as the proper rules to leave you alone if you ask them to, I've had the others repeatedly bang on my door when I tried to send them away).
-

That sounds like a good way to start is to ask them what church they're with so you can call the church and complain. It might not help, but it might. I guess you could complain to the city if the church ignores your request.
-
other than JWs and Mormons I don't know who does it,
I had a visit from a couple of people from a local congregation of a mainline Protestant denomination (I don't remember which one — Baptist or Lutheran, maybe; it may have been the Lutheran church across the street from my house, but I don't remember) looking for people whose first language is Spanish. Since I don't qualify, we didn't get beyond that first question.
-
Not sure if... Lutheran
or Baptist
LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Not sure if... apple
or the Nile river
I had some people show up talking about aliens invading and giving us bad emotions. They said they were from a church. Must have been baptists.
He had a towel on his head.... clearly Muslim.
Don't you think it's weird that we can better tell the difference between Hindu and Muslim than Baptist or Lutheran, when the Christians visit our house once a month, but Hindus only run our gas station, and most people haven't met a Muslim?
Look I'm sorry, I can't identify the man other than he had the image of a guy praying with 50 arms on his truck.
Yep, that was Jesus.
I don't know, it was half fish half man.
Mermaid????
The other way around.
Dagon???
I think. It was hard to tell, the head was smashed up, because they say it kept falling on the floor. They blamed this box thing with people on it that had wings...
The arc of the covenent. Ok, that's the Jews.

No.
-
It is weird, it means that the only source of information they have is what they see on the news.
10 years ago, they wouldn't be able to tell that the head wrap doesn't mean Muslim. This alone nullifies a lot of the arguments I see on the internet.
It took me a library of articles to build up the history of the conflict in the Palestine region (Israel + Jordan). Most people believe that the UN formed all of the borders of Israel and they've slowly given more land to Israel over time.
...
Just because ignorance is common, doesn't make it any more weird.
-
they
Your whole previous post was kind of incoherent. Who is "they?" What's special about 10 years ago?
I just know enough about Baptists and Lutherans to know there's not anything in particular to distinguish them by looks (in the US, at least).
-
....is @xaade secretly Cleverbot? WTF is going on?
-

I have no idea what you mean...this absolutely never works on Justice Warriors.
-
It's sort of a rant.
"They" is the general public. The ones that seem keen on their ability to distinguish, criticize, know everything about, enough to tell you when you are making a "bad" stereotype. Yet, can only tell you information based on trends in mass media.
-
It was intended to make no sense.
This is how I view the common discussions I see about people trying to flex their knowledge of religions, when they try to debate foreign policy.
-
"They" is the general public.
when you are making a "bad" stereotype.
Hmmmmm.....
-
I wish it were a bad stereotype.
It's very accurate.
-
You say so...
-
....as long as you're not like, having some bizarre seizure or something...

People are still bringing up the crusades every time someone says ISIS is doing peace wrong.
Do people bring up your 5 generations removed ancestor when you discuss internal affairs.
Well, I have to correct myself. It's not just religions people don't understand. It's general economics too.
Sorry, my privilege was talking.

Yes, this is what I like to call, "ignorant of history."
Do people bring up your 5 generations removed ancestor when you discuss internal affairs.
Some of them think they are, but I don't think there's a good reason to believe any of my ancestors owned slaves in the US.
Well, I have to correct myself. It's not just religions people don't understand. It's general economics too.
It's lots of things, really.
Sorry, my privilege was talking.
...to my privilege, so we're cool.
