Just use sublime text (anti-vim rant)
-
The last "desktop" PC I bought was a Gigabyte Brix, and I probably went laptop-only for a good ten years before I got that...
-
-
Weren't you on the vim side?
-
I'm on the Emacs side. Now, if only it came with an operating system…
I also use Eclipse, which I suspect exists to make Emacs look lightweight.
-
Why do you need an Operating System for your Operating System?
-
Why do you need an Operating System for your Operating System?
You are kidding arent you ?
Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?That sounds preposterous to me.
If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.
Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.
Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.
I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.
-
Classic.
-
Now if it only came with a decent text editor...
-
I, for one, support replacing vim with shrimp.

If the shrimp are modal, I'm on board.
-
mmmmm..... shrimp scampi....
or would you prefer popcorn shrimp?
Both sound good right now.

Gay shrimp wrapped in bacon?

I'm confused.
Patrick Stewart is pretty funny, I think. In a rather subtle way.
-
After reading this thread and all the anti-vim hate, I realised the true meaning of EMACS: Editor MAsoChiSm.
VIM is simply: Vitriol in motion.
-
-
Mine is about 80. It loads some plugins, like NERDCommenter and NERDTree. And shuts off the visual bell and makes the motion keys work even within a line, if line wrap mode is on (i.e., pressing down will go down on the screen as opposed to the next physical line).
Vim has some warts, but also major conveniences. If I get a computer/cloud host (which happens all the time), the same old vim configuration is just an scp away. Heck, I just have to point my cloud deployment software at my vim configuration and get a consistent text editing environment on every system I touch, without dealing with the constant lag of an scp-based remote editing solution.
Also, modal editing. Movement, cut, copy, and paste {1} in the home row. Modal editing, all around.
{1}: Okay, copy is actually y and paste is p, but close enough.

That joke didn't age well, though.

Can vim print?

Another one that didn't age well:
Emacs Makes A Computer Slow

Hey, recursive acronyms? I know this is TDWTF, but even we have some decency standards around here. Jeez.

Hey, recursive acronyms? I know this is TDWTF, but even we have some decency standards around here. Jeez.
If Linus can have one, why can't Stallman?
-
If Linus can have one, why can't Stallman?
Does asking "Huh?" here qualify me for a woosh?
Or did you type that backwards?
-
I think it depends on whether you know that one of Emacs's original authors is Stallman or not - if yes, then you definitely wooshed. If not, I guess you're justified.
-
-
Well, GNU is Stallman's brainchild as well, so that's another one on his side. The Linus bit confuses me though.
-
Some people say that Linux is an acronym for "Linux Is Not UniX".
-
Some people say that Linux is an acronym for "Linux Is Not UniX".
Some people are wrong.
It's basically Linus with an X, because "it's UniX, you have to have an X". CBA to look up the actual quote, but I remember it distinctly.
GNU is Not UniX is correct though,
-
Now you're totally getting flagged.
-
Now you're totally getting flagged.
What, for overestimating the human stupidity for once? :P
-
For wooshing over my original joke, and now wooshing over the backronym made up by overzealous FOSStards (of which at least some of them weren't serious).
-
If Linus can have one, why can't Stallman?
Implies knowing about
Some people say that Linux is an acronym for "Linux Is Not UniX".
Which is a
backronym made up by overzealous FOSStards
Which I didn't know about. And is wrong anyway.
Huh.
Flag away for all I care. I just want to have all the facts stated.
-
The acronym being wrong is irrelevant, because Emacs Makes A Computer Slow is just as wrong.
-
Hold on, hold on, I saw something appropriate around here...
Ah, there we go.
-
Shouldn't you make it a reply to your own post? Because it was you who changed a topic from "a cryptic way to say that Linux has stupid recursive backronym too" to "Linux is Unix and people claiming otherwise are idiots".
-
Because you presented me with an acronym that is wrong, I used sources to show that it is wrong, thus proving that your original statement was wrong and that me being confused by it was not due to my lack of knowledge, but, quite opposite, because I did know there were no recursive acronyms tied to Linus Torvalds?
So addressing the original point with facts is now goalpost moving. Wow. Much wow.
-
If serious answers to bullshit that was a basis for a joke isn't goalpost moving, then what is?
-
...are you moving the goalposts on moving the goalposts? Well played!
-
Is going meta a goalpost moving?

At this point this just applies to the whole topic:

It's up to @PJH.
-
Since @Yamikuronue liked my post, I guess going meta is moving a goalpost after all. So I have no other choice than to admit I was moving goalpost around. But at least we're not arguing about meta-meta-meta-morality. I'd love to, but I doubt there's anyone on this forum with enough free time, good will and attention span to have a real discussion on this subject. Too bad.
