In some countries such as Spain, Finland or France, the local rules of the language specify that loanwords should be used as little as possible
And in some countries, the locals ignore the official rules and use the loanwords more than the native ones.
From what I've heard, French in France use more loanwords than French in Quebec. So over there, email is email and weekends are weekends, but over here it's courriel and fin-du-semaine.

@pie_flavor said in TIL (about the Dark Arts of HTML):
@Gąska the funny one is that the loanwords are usually just to reduce how many syllables there are, e.g. 'pantalones vaqueros' ⇒ 'bluejéans', but even though Spanish has a really short word for 'network', i.e. 'red', which is capitalized 'Red' in Spain to be equivalent to 'Internet', south of the border they just say 'ínternet' for some reason.
As far as I can tell, this shit wasn't designed to make sense.
When I was in California, I'd occasionally hear Mexicans say things like "te doy un raite" (literally: I [will] give you a ["ride" made into a loanword]) which makes no sense unless you understand that the entire phrase is lifted straight from English. The "proper" Spanish way to say it is much shorter, to boot: "te llevo" (literally: I [will] carry you).

I've had a kindle for 5+ years.
Yes, I think (so long as the format is acceptable to Amazon's conversion servers) it works better than manually uploading it to the kindle via USB for the position-sync aspect.

"CD-ROM" -> "cédérom"
In Polish, people used to say "płyta kompaktowa", which literally means compact disc. By late 90s, everyone switched to "płyta CD" (with English pronunciation), annoying the pedants much like PIN number.
"WiFi" -> "accès sans fil à Internet", etc.
Here we say "wifi" (pronounced "vee-fee"). But we use "internet bezprzewodowy", which roughly means the same as that French phrase, to mean mobile internet.

Circa 2011, it was a popular meme in Poland to use English memes translated literally word by word. "Deal with it" became "handluj z tym", meaning "trade/barter with it". "No shit Sherlock" became "nie gówno Sherlocku", which means "not a shit, Sherlock".

@Gąska I like to do that in Portuguese, but I'm not sure if it's a meme.
I've been doing that since I can remember.

@hungrier Yep. The sound movies use for eagle cries doesn't actually come from an eagle at all; it's the call of a red-tailed hawk.

@Luhmann If it wasn't clear, that ought to be "screw you, asshole", but close enough.
Edit to clarify: "screw" in the sense of using screws to bind things together. It's not usually a euphemism to anything, in PT."Tail hole" does make a nice curse.

Instant reordering with Amazon Dash buttons: In the beginning, Amazon sold physical buttons you could use to reorder various household products (such as paper towels, laundry detergent or coffee pods). But Dash buttons are now exclusively virtual, meaning you access them on your computer, mobile device, Echo Show ($180 at Amazon) or Samsung Family Hub. The functionality remains the same: one tap automatically reorders individual products.
Whoa! With this new technology I can buy things on Amazon by going to their website and clicking! And I don't even have to pay any special fee for the privilege of doing so!

TIL Marisa Tomei (the actress who plays "hot young Aunt May" in the MCU) is actually not particularly young at all. She's in her mid-50s, perfectly appropriate for the character of Aunt May; time has just been nice to her!

I wouldn't say so.
Aunt May in the comics:
Aunt May in the movies (the good ones, pre-MCU):
She's supposed to be old, not middle aged
-
@hungrier ...which I always found a bit odd. How many high school students have parents (or aunts, who are generally of approximately the same age as their parents) of grandmotherly age?
-
@Mason_Wheeler I hadn't really thought about it from that angle before, but it is kind of strange for her to have been so much older. But FWIW her age was consistent, as far as I know, from the comics to the 90s cartoon (I don't remember her in the 60s cartoon) to the 2000s movies, then got progressively younger with the garbage Amazing Spider-Man movies and the less-garbage MCU ones
-

I don't think they were "garbage." Not as good as the Raimi films in some areas, better than them in others. Overall, not quite as good, but not horrible, not by a long shot.

I remember it, mostly because of how memorably excited a certain megafan friend of mine was at the film's impending release. That excitement cooled rather quickly, of course

Interesting. That's the first one I heard anyone call any of those movies good (other than in an expression "so bad it's good"). But then, I stopped following superhero movies around the time the first Avengers movie came out.

TIL that in Call of Duty 2 (released 2005), you can get partially blinded by looking at the sun too much. I'm sure the programmers would be happy to hear that after 15 years, someone finally noticed.

To my knowledge, the Sam Raimi trilogy were pretty widely beloved, especially in hindsight after the Amazing Spider-Man ones came out
-
@hungrier the first Spider-Man has 71 on Metacritic, which is on the low side of the four-point rating scale. Second movie has 83, which matches what I heard about it (although I admit I haven't seen it). Third one has only 59, which shouldn't surprise anyone - even back then nobody liked emo kids.
I absolutely believe they're seen as much better now than back when they premiered. Nostalgia is hell of a drug.
-
@Gąska to be honest, I think the only spider man movie I saw was the 3rd one. With the sand villain. Or was that the second?
-
@Benjamin-Hall Wikipedia says 3. I've seen it so I should've remembered it without looking up, but I don't. It must've been pretty bad if I don't even remember one of the villains.

I don't remember much about it other than that. Got dragged to it in college (grad school?) when it came out. I'm not a big movie person, and even less a superhero person.

If memory serves, in No One Lives Forever if you rotated too much while looking upwards you would get dizzy, to the point of temporarily hallucinating floating objects around you.
-
@Zecc I haven't played Metal Gear Solid but I've read that in one of the games, the inventory view also shows the player character that you can rotate, and if you rotated it fast enough and long enough, they'd get dizzy and vomit - which you can use to get rid of poison.
-
@Gąska I remember seeing a screenshot of Solid Snake puking when the game came out but I thought it was actually something in-game that caused it. But indeed you can do it with the menu:

Also, according to the comments it gets you a trophy as well

@hungrier one of my favorite video game gimmicks comes from MGS1 where one boss could read your mind and foresee your every move (and also shit talk you about other games on your memory card), and to beat him you've had to move the controller to player 2 slot.
