@dkf For water cooling, can you not just route the water tubing outside the case and use as big an external radiator/fan as you want?
Some chassises have holes for that. Some don't. But then you'd have your PC in 2 parts, connected by water pipes.
And while tower PCs aren't all that portable, I like being able to just pick mine up and pack it in the trunk of my car. Without having to drain it first. But you do you.
-
@acrow said in Not sure if good idea, bad idea or evil idea:
you do you.
I've never actually had a computer with liquid cooling. It just seemed like a logical way to improve the cooling, but I can see why it would be less convenient. Like just about everything in life, there are tradeoffs between convenience and performance, convenience and security, convenience and cost, convenience and ...

Back when I was 12, I had a computer with a paper+foil RF shield. Opening the computer and taking the RF shield out was recommended to make your computer less likely to cook its chips and only rarely caused interference issues.
If instead you had a metal RF shield, it was probably already touching the chips that get hot to serve as a heatsink. Leave those ones alone.

Oh, me neither. I've had a chassis with holes for an external radiator though. Paying a little more for the chassis gets you all kinds of features. Some more useful than others. My current chassis has a SATA bay under a hatch in the roof. And removable dust filters on all air intakes.

@Zerosquare that was a fun computer.

Held in place by magnets. Best system ever.
That's going to generate EM noise on contact, mind.
-

However, if you don't use an external radiator, you miss out on that (sole) disproportionate win that liquid cooling offers. Piping heat around inside the case is... nice... sure, but it's inside the case still.

Not as logical as just using molten gallium. That'd actually offer something even without an external radiator.
In summary, most liquid cooling is bad/evil. It is doubtful that most installations achieve a compelling benefit, and likely that most vendors do not offer one.
To be fair, it is t3h awesum and goes well with case lights.

removable[Held in place by magnets. Best system ever.] dust filters
Unlike my previous PC, where they were removable[Open up the case. Unscrew the drive bay. Unplug the fan. Slide it out 5cm. Lift the filter out of the slot.]
-
@PleegWat Reminds me of my brother's Antec Twelve Hundred. Each drive bay had 8 knurled thumb screws of which 4 on the backside.
You get one guess how often those filters were cleaned.

Mine was a Nine Hundred Two.

Yep, my computer companion for most of my childhood. I switched up to a 128D in high school; it's sitting right over .
I read so many library books while waiting for games to load. :)

The case I used for my current computer is the most magnety case I've ever had. The upper side doors are framed glass with magnets on the front side and hinges at the back. The lower sides doors are magnets on top and hinges on the bottom. On top there's a thin filter with magnets. The front panel (which is almost all metal mesh) actually clips in with the common front panel clip, probably so you have a place to pick the thing up.
It has thin (2.5") internal drive bays hidden all over the place too.I would have liked to have an external drive bay for an optical drive, but there aren't many recent cases with those and none with some of the other features I wanted. Time marches on.

@boomzilla Don't you remember that Dilbert from the 1990ies? "She's inquisitive. I like that."

I would try the pancake one IFF they called it Aunt Jemima.
-
@boomzilla My roommate found those. Bought two to bring home for us to try, as we both tend to like instant ramen of various varieties. He ate one bite of it and immediately noped out and tossed it.

@boomzilla I have not yet worked up the courage to subject myself to it.

@dcon I didn't watch it at first, but when you suggested there was something unexpected, I immediately guessed what it was. Then I watched it, and I was right. I kinda noticed something didn't look quite right about the "tires" in the preview image, but it didn't click for me until your post.

My first thought was: those aren't going to clear the frame when they spin.
Edit: Oh, and Mythbusters.

If it is actually good, think of the possibilities for back country camping! A beer after a good days hike always tastes good, but there was no way I was going to carry it in my pack.
-
@dcon yes, instead of lugging heavy bottles/cans of beer you just need to lug heavy bottles/cans of fizzy water.
Or the pump + cartridge to carbonate water on the go.
Or a few blocks of dry ice, plus of course what's needed to keep them as dry ice until you use them.
Or find a naturally fizzy (but not otherwise awfully tasting) water spring.
Or drink flat beer.
...
All in all, I think you're still going to have to wait until you get back to civilisation to enjoy a beer.
-
@remi TFA says the powdered beer is carbonated (which, given the untold numbers of effervescent vitamin tablets available, seems like a no-brainer.)
ETA: That said, drinkers report that it is a bit flat, so objection withdrawn.

@GOG I remembered something from skimming TFA earlier, which I found again:
I was expecting it to be a little fizzier, but in fairness the water that was used may have gone flat.
That made me think that the powder is intended to be added to fizzy water. But reading a bit more accurately () shows you might be right and just muddles the matter even more:
The 'dryest beer', as it has been called, differs from other powdered beers released over the last few years as it is carbonated and contains alcohol. [...] 'We have so many opportunities with the powder, as we can make it with alcohol, without it, with carbon dioxide and without, [...]' [...] The set up was simple; a glass, some still and sparkling water, a mixer and, most importantly, the beige-coloured powder. [...] I'm sure once the development on the powder is completed and it is properly carbonated, Mr Fritsche's prediction might come true
So I'm guessing the beer currently requires at least some added fizzyness, but that its creators says this is just WIP.
There's also one for @HardwareGeek here:
Mr Fritsche took over the reigns to the family brewery over from his father 20 years ago

@GOG said in Not sure if good idea, bad idea or evil idea:
effervescent vitamin tablets
There is an interesting side-line here: before posting my first post here, I thought that "tablets to turn flat water into fizzy" would indeed be something that exists, which would be an easy answer to this problem and thus would make my initial post impossible.
So I did a quick search and was surprised to not see any result about that!
Now I'm not saying this doesn't exist but apparently this isn't something standard/easy to find? Why? Some reason that would make it match this thread's title?
-
@remi A mix of bicarbonate of soda and citric acid powder will add fizz-generating potential to the powder. I'm more interested in how they plan to add ethanol to the mix, as that's a bulk wet ingredient.
-
@dkf You'd thought so and yet... see previous post.
I'm gonna nerd-snip all chemistry nerds around here, but wouldn't adding a lot of soda powder make the water taste salty (which obviously would affect the taste of the beer)?
As for the ethanol, alcohol powder seems to be a thing that exists.
-
@remi said in Not sure if good idea, bad idea or evil idea:
introduction in the U.S. could raise significant concerns from alcohol retailers as it will raise the awareness of their customers health and well as a major priority. including such as restaurants, bars, and sporting venues,[18] including:
-
@remi The reaction with citric acid produces carbon dioxide, water, and sodium citrate (too to determine which of the three possible forms are likely to result - only the entry for mono- actually mentions neutralisation with bicarbonate of soda, but it appears that tri- is most common, so ).
Monosodium citrate is described as having a slightly acidic taste, while trisodium citrate, supposedly has, a saline, tart flavour. Presumably, part of developing the mix involved ensuring that whatever flavours were introduced by the carbonating agent were masked or neutralised by other ingredients.
-
@HardwareGeek clearly they need someone to take over the reigns of editing.

@dkf once the futility has grown incomprehensible, this is the best course, and perfectly safe.
