  • SockDev

Post your WTF deals of the day here, be they hilarious geek references, or products that should never have been made, or even things that make you go "OOH! SHINY! @accalia WOULD WANT!" (because i like shiny things. If they go *beep* all the better!)

    I'll start us off!

    yep. @accalia want!

... This thread is going to do very bad things to my bank balance me thinks.

Minor advice: do not import clothing by post. Ever. Stick to domestic suppliers and the costs won't be nearly so astounding…

  • SockDev

not an issue with the linked deal. woot.com is local to my country.

    but nevertheless very good advice.

That's given the domestic supplies do carry the clothing in question. I've been looking for a decent Talking Heads T-shirt in Poland for at least half a year now.

ebay.co.uk? A thousand of auctions. Polish auction service? Four, out of which three are the same thing which I don't like, and the fourth looks like somebody used an iron transfer paper, a white tee, and very bad Paint skills to make it.

I mean what the fuck is this shit.

It's not too bad to import things between EU countries, due to the customs union. You've still got to deal with the supplier not understanding your address, and the delivery firm being rubbish, but at least the utter pain of dealing with customs isn't there.

And you can check for fit if you buy at a brick-and-mortar location. I have several shirts and pants that don't really fit because apparently every clothing manufacturer has wildly different definitions of size. I even have XL shirts that are smaller than medium shirts.

The ones that annoy me the most are trousers - these (in the UK, at least) should not differ because for men the measurement is in inches - a 36 waist should the the same size everywhere as 36" isn't really a variable measurement, although it's not and you can even buy two pairs the "same" size which are actually different sizes if the brand differs.

True in the U.S. too. Most of my jeans are either 32x32 or 34x34. I have a 34x34 pair that I can only fit in if my weight is down but are the perfect length, but some of my 32x32 pairs are excessively long and baggy and don't even look that good but I don't really care and wear them anyway and even wrap around my foot if I'm not wearing shoes to control the extra length.

One time I'd bought a pair that were 36 length, because I wasn't happy with the length of my previous 34 length jeans. The 36 ones were literally 6 inches longer than the 34 and had to be rolled up at the ankle.

Also I'm horrible at picking out clothes even without all the clothing size WTFs.

  • I have 2 pairs of jeans at 36 waist remaining from heavier days (read: last year) which are different but close enough when worn with a belt (even when new) - now I'm back down to 34 it seems it's worse.
The length annoys me less, but you're right, that's not consistent either.

Now you've discovered the real reason most men get married.

  • 34x34? Too skinny. 36x34? Way too big.

I solved that long ago; I got very lucky and found a manufacturer that makes trousers that fit me perfectly. (Alas, they're expensive… but that beats having a huge gap between the bottom of the trouser leg and my ankles.)

  • I survived the hour long Uno hand

I thought my problem was trying to shove female hips into male trousers, but my dad confirms: finding trousers that fit right over our hereditary large bottom is difficult :(

I recently found Duluth Trading Company. I absolutely love their firehose work pants (which fit me perfectly, too), though they're pretty expensive.

For me, it's Lands End's chinos that are just perfect. If I get “business casual” right, it's because that's what fits comfortably. (Never had a pair of jeans that wasn't really uncomfortable in some way…)
