🖎 The officious song of the day comment thread!

There's a funny bit in the beginning of Ghost in the Shell, where Kusanagi's jumping off a building, and someone says her heart rate is up or her biological signs are off or wahtever, and the dub says something lame, but the subtitles have her saying something like "it must be that time of the month."
Ha ha ha! Because of course you can't have a competent female cop without a "time of the month" joke! What a hilarious gag, Japan!!!
Whoever removed that in the dub did the writers of that movie a HUGE favor.
-
It's also old as shit in anime terms. Translations have been getting a lot better, roughly correlating with the popularity of anime in the countries consuming the translations. Dub companies don't change things as much these days, they just hire homeless dudes from the back alley to do the voice work to save $$.
-
Japan is also racist, particularly against the Chinese
"Chinese" is not a race. Nor is "Japanese" for that matter. Hence, "nationalist".
-
without a "time of the month" joke!
She made the joke herself. Someone didn't make it about her. Do you see the difference, or are you channeling @ben_lubar?
I assumed it was sarcasm on her part.
Besides, since you missed the point again, I'll make it clear: while the line may have been crude or culturally offensive or heteronormative or misogynistic or whatever, it wasn't the bland nonentity of the dub.
-
"Chinese" is not a race. Nor is "Japanese" for that matter. Hence, "nationalist".
Oh for fuck's sake, could you pedantic dickweeds just give it a fucking rest for ONCE?
In any case, I guarantee if you ask a Japanese person if a Chinese person is a different race than they are, they'll say yes. I wager $500 on it.

I was going to say basically this. Since I got hanzo'd, have terrible voice acting instead:
-

Well, true. The most recent thing I've seen is probably Arrietty. I don't actually watch a lot of anime (or much tv in general; don't have the time for it.)

Roasted garlic is like, the best food nature ever produced.I'm not sure about that. There's chocolate too! Needs more extensive testing…
Many years ago, I had a friend who claimed there were only two basic food groups:
- Foods improved by the addition of garlic.
- Foods improved by the addition of chocolate.
There is only one food that is in both groups,
mole
, although pedantically , that's made with
cacao
, not
chocolate
. I would claim that
bread, bagels and similar items
can be in either group, but not both at the same time.

First of all, Billy West is gonna come over here and club you in the face, because how fucking disrespectful. Billy West, Casey Kasem, the fucking LEGEND that is Mel Blanc. You are so incredibly wrong my brain is exploding.

WAT. It's a scarab beetle car/spaceship.
I finally earned "First Flag", apparently.
It's not like this post was too much off-topic, but it was the post that started the chain, so...
-
I finally earned "First Flag", apparently.
'grats.
How is it that you can theoretically earn "first flag" multiple times, @pjh?
JIC I'm going to flag @Zecc's post I'm replying to in hopes you'll grant it again.

Hitler had the VW Beetle designed, and a few pre-production models built. Then he started a "pre-installment" plan promising citizens that if they paid a monthly fee, they'd get a Beetle as soon as one was available. Then he stopped production of the car and funneled all the money into the military (but kept the installment plan going with zero intention of ever supplying cars), cheating his own citizens out of their money.
Which is why I used the word "gave". I happen to be pretty well acquainted with the history of my Western neighbours, especially that particular period and I am aware that the VW project took a military turn. Nevertheless, Hitler did have a major role in the birthing of this particular model.
@GOG said:
you come from pointy-haired land
What does that even mean?
That you come from the land of pointy-haired bosses, pointy-haired labour arrangements and pointy-haired business arrangements. A closer study of the American economy - and society in general - is an excellent antidote to your country's soft power.
In any case, I guarantee if you ask a Japanese person if a Chinese person is a different race than they are, they'll say yes. I wager $500 on it.
And?

Pfft. Reading's for nerds.
-
Nevertheless, Hitler did have a major role in the birthing of this particular model.
Yeah, it was the fucking Nazi version of the Holman Horror. Hitler did not bring anything good into the world by concocting this scam. The quality of the car itself is only due to Hitler having access to better engineers than Holman did.
That you come from the land of pointy-haired bosses, pointy-haired labour arrangements and pointy-haired business arrangements.
I have absolutely no idea what the phrase "pointy-haired" means. Like... Fry from Futurama? (Voiced by Billy West.)
And?
And give me my $500, bitch.

We had our own version of that, decades later - the Fiat 126p (licensed, but subject to so many modifications down the line, that it pretty much became a new car). It was surprisingly good for something so bad.
You seem to be at least somewhat inclined to agree that the car was good quality (the world at large seems to agree, given its popularity). Sadly, there's no way you can write Hitler out of its history. Please remember that I am by no means a fan of the gentleman. He levelled the city I live in. While my mother was living in it.
And give me my $500, bitch.
Why would I do that?
-
You're welcome.
I know the whole pointy-haired boss thing, but what the fuck does that have to do with anything we're discussing in this thread?
You seem to be at least somewhat inclined to agree that the car was good quality (the world at large seems to agree, given its popularity). Sadly, there's no way you can write Hitler out of its history.
No. But it's also not an example of Hitler doing "good" in the world. It's an example of Hitler doing one tiny bit of good he could then exploit to do orders of magnitude more evil.
Why would I do that?
So I don't have to go upside the head.
-
No. But it's also not an example of Hitler doing "good" in the world. It's an example of Hitler doing one tiny bit of good he could then exploit to do orders of magnitude more evil.
The point is that if someone says "The VW beetle was a great little car", it's silly to say "You're excusing Hitler!" in response.
I know the whole pointy-haired boss thing, but what the fuck does that have to do with anything we're discussing in this thread?
From my lofty European perch, the US is seriously fucked up and you people like it that way. Glass houses, throwing stones and all that jazz...
-
The point is that if someone says "The VW beetle was a great little car", it's silly to say "You're excusing Hitler!" in response.
But that was what you were doing! You were like, "sure Japan can be racist and still make good products, just like Nazis could be awful and still make the VW Beetle".
And I pointed out the Beetle was specifically created to do more evil, so it's a terrible example.
And then MY BRAIN EXPLODED ALL OVER.
From my lofty European perch, the US is seriously fucked up and you people like it that way.
Like what? Dilbert cartoons? You have lost me so utterly I don't even have the vaguest idea of what you're trying to communicate at this point.

Some of the stuff that routinely comes up re being part of the workforce on this site, for one. I tell you, man, that shit is crrrazy.
You were like, "sure Japan can be racist and still make good products, just like Nazis could be awful and still make the VW Beetle".
Secondly, even if it were true, you're excusing massive, institutional racism and sexism due to the quality of their voice actors. Did you know if you're not Japanese, you can't buy property? But that's ok! Because voice acting!
I don't see what the nature of Japanese society has to do with our appreciation of their cultural/technological output (or lack thereof). I certainly don't see anyone "excusing" anything. To go full Godwin: Hitler gave us the VW beetle. Does that mean that anyone who drove a beetle back in the day "excused" Nazism? Nah, that would be silly.
Please deposit head in blast compartment.
-

I don't know what that means.
But at this point I'm no longer surprised.

Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy.
-
That's not true.

Of all the dastardly things he did, this one is almost completely forgotten.
Giving people a VW Beetle probably would have been more evil.

Also, to add to the spice debate, I don't consider spice a flavor. It masks flavor. It means that you're eating terrible food.
-
I don't consider spice a flavor. It masks flavor.
I assume you are referring to the heat of chili peppers. Chili peppers (if dried) are a spice, but they are not "spice." Fennel, mustard, cinnamon, cloves, saffron, ginger, et al. are also spices, and they are definitely flavorful.
-

Correct. I love those.
"Heat" spices are not flavor.
-
"Heat" spices are not flavor.
The heat is not a flavor, but the peppers have flavor in addition to the heat. Habañero peppers are alleged¹ to have a flavor quite different from other chilis.
¹ I don't know; they're too hot for me to taste much.

I just don't taste it.
Technically, kerosene has a flavor, but you don't see anyone adding it to their food.
-
@mott555, not too bad. I hate Metallica, but I am currently wearing a Black Sabbath shirt.
Which Metallica? I posit that there were two bands named Metallica. Somewhere around 1988 - 1989, they was abducted and replaced with some kind of evil lookalikes who put out mediocre music for almost the next 20 years. Then the real Metallica finally escaped from captivity and released Death Magnetic, the first real Metallica album since before the black album.
IMO of course.
-
Yeah, the early stuff isn't so bad. Based on the fact that I have ears, you can probably figure out which Metallica I hate.
-
In any case, I guarantee if you ask a Japanese person if a Chinese person is a different race than they are, they'll say yes. I wager $500 on it.
And even if you don't care about that, ask what they think about white people. And if you still aren't convinced, black people.
-
From my lofty European perch, the US is seriously fucked up and you people like it that way
Depending on what you think is fucked up, some of us definitely do. But there's nothing close to unanimity on anything. But you have to be pretty ignorant of modern day America to think that everyone doesn't have a giant list of things they'd change if they could.
Your statements reminds me of the sort of person who thinks food just comes from the supermarket and is horrified when they learn about the sort of things that happen in the process of creating food.
-
Also, to add to the spice debate, I don't consider spice a flavor. It masks flavor. It means that you're eating terrible food.
That just shows that you're over sensitive to capsaicin. I find that spice (heat) enhances flavors up to a point. Which is to say that my sensitivity level is higher than yours. But you think that IPAs taste good, so we already know that your senses are warped.
-

No, I hate IPAs. I drink stouts, porters, pale ales, etc.
-

This. For me, that point is around 3 (of 5) stars at a typical Chinese or Thai restaurant. I can stand it hotter than that, but I enjoy it less.
-

Depends if they are only against capsaicin. There are other things that also give "spicy" but slightly different pathways are used (like what wasabi uses) so if @chubertdev is against those as well then it is "spiciness" that they have a problem with rather than sensitivity to one of the more common sources.
-
My intention was that by pointing out that I can only list about 3 good things that came out of Japan, it would serve as a damning of the rest of the culuture by faint praise, but apparently I didn't pull it off.
Is there anywhere on the internet where this would actually work?
- Foods improved by the addition of garlic.- Foods improved by the addition of chocolate.
I've put cocoa powder in chili before. The bitterness complements the other flavors.
Like what? Dilbert cartoons? You have lost me so utterly I don't even have the vaguest idea of what you're trying to communicate at this point.
He's trying to say that we're all clueless idiots who don't let that fact stop us from making important decisions.
Habañero peppers are alleged¹ to have a flavor quite different from other chilis.
If you want the Habanero flavor without the thermonuclear heat level, leave the chile whole in whatever you're cooking and take it out before it splits.
Filed under: does anyone else think the discourse way of responding to multiple posts is profoundly annoying?
-
What, it isn't logical to multiquote one post?
-
He's trying to say that we're all clueless idiots who don't let that fact stop us from making important decisions.
Well, if all the clueless idiots stopped making decisions, nothing would ever happen.
-
And if you still aren't convinced, black people.
There's nothing that'll cure you of the idea (for example) that "only white people can be racist" like watching a black guy say "fuckin' mexicans" when one walks by.
By which I mean not only the obvious, but the contrapositive that if you're so deep down the rabbit hole you actually believe that, even seeing proof it's not true won't change your opinion.
-
Asshole-ry knows no bounds of intelligence, class, race or creed. Some people are just irredeemable <expletive-deleted>s.
-
Speaking of which, did you see that unintentionally-funny clip recently with Bill Maher and Ben Affleck? Maher starts saying "yeah it sucks people are bashing Muslims but some of them actually do some bad things" and Affleck started calling him a racist.
We don't even need to point out Islam's not a race; the rest of the field is so ripe.
-
did you see that unintentionally-funny clip recently with Bill Maher and Ben Affleck?
No. But thanks for asking. (The Likes thread needs dedicated reading!)

(re: lilium metal version)Ok, not bad, but IMO better in theory than practice. I almost posted the original lilium a day or two ago, but figured most of my songs have a depressing tone anyway, no need to go extreme.
-
the original lilium is rather depressing, but then that anime is 150% messed up (still worth the watch, particularly if the sub group you get it from didn't try to censor it)
I like this version of Lilium though. I was thinking of posting Gregorian chant next... but decided that would be cruel.
-

I always watch the good stuff - 100% uncensored Japanese stuff. It's...... let's just say, it's worth watching. If only for the song.
-
yep! :-D
of course the best version of the song is in ep 12 (or 13 i forget how many that one had, it's the last episode) the OP has nothing on that one!
