How To Demoralize Employees: A DIY Guide for Terrible Companies

I wish you luck. I dealt with chronic pain for a long while (back/spine issues), so I truly empathize.

Biting is fun!

There's such a thing?
Of course. Part of it comes down to pressure and intent, but also it is like real estate: Location, Location, Location.

go five miles inland and i have no doubt. but less than a klick from the shoreline? nah. that big old body of water changes things something fierce.

How many whoosh badges do you have?
She would likely say 'too many', though certain others might prefer 'not enough'.

and we had to walk to school! uphill! both ways!
I lived on a hill, and my school was on a small rise, so I did walk uphill both ways. Technically.
-
I used to have to bike to school. 6km. Against the wind both ways.

... you decide.
I've decided you must have missed it by mistake, which means it's probably time for your .

"have" to? I always considered that superior to taking the bus, although 6km is more than I would have wanted to ride.

I believe it was.

No school buses round here, you don't really get an alternative. Lots of youngsters who don't like biking get a 'brommer' (google says moped) when they're allowed one at 16.
Though it definitely didn't turn me away from biking - I still take the bike to work every day. Good for one's health.

Got it. I was reading it as "have to even though I'd rather do it some other way" (which you probably also meant), not "have to because there's no other option" or something.
-
Against the wind both way is kind of our version of uphill both ways, the Netherlands being somewhat short on hills of any significance.

I went on a bike ride once where that happened. Purposefully rode into the wind anticipating a blazing tailwind ride home. Just about the turn around point, a front came thru - wind did a 180 and got stronger. And it started raining - horizontally. I was not happy (riding in the crosswind was worse than the headwind - had to lean over sideways to stay upright)
On a different note, we did do a tailwind ride once. 160mi in 6.5 hrs. First 100mi in 3.5hr. Serious fun. (support car brought us home)

Something would be seriously wrong if it was still on topic after nearly 1000 posts!

True. But I'm pretty sure we've swerved a couple times there too.
coming back on topic...

Can only wish. The other 20 people in the room would have to stay home too. But that's why I start at 8a - the first hour is nice and quiet.

I share a room with 3 others, all of whom have work-at-home days. Under the current schedule, I'm alone every Thursday. Extra days off frequently translate into extra solo days.
My sentiment around this tends more toward 'Does anyone ever actually come to the office nowadays!'.
-
Between WFH days, and us being in other offices, we're probably each there 2 days a week max, and it's rare that there's an overlap of more than 2 of us.

Most of us (the Win-devs)* are in-office. I like the easy in-person communication and the commute's not bad (compared to my old one). We can WFH.
* except the 2 in Boston. They only make the commute 1-2 times a year. CA is a little far...

I'm the only person that works on my (dev) team. The other guy resigned when we told him he had to work extra hours to help meet a deadline.
-
time in lieu?
No?
I would resign too (depending on the time required).
I do not work for free.
My company gives time in lieu.
I had an extra week of vacation by the end of the year.
And that was because my supervisor didn't accept docking my pay as an option.
-
The corporate grapevine says they're shrinking our support department, and evil tongues have it we'll be called out during non-business hours more often. We have Opinions on this.
-
Then make sure they don't have a support department.
You're contributing to the problem, really.

Usually, we do offer time in lieu. However he was up against the deadline due to his own choices. He had been working something like 25-30 hour weeks, we had already shifted the deadline by a month because he didn't meet it the last time, and other issues. He was not going to get time in lieu this time around, and he was going to be let go after the project was done anyway. He just beat us to the punch.
-
???
How does someone work 25 hour workweeks?
Where do I get that job?

The bad thing? If you ever leave, there's no accumulated vacation payout...
-
I guess it's not paid vacation.

I wonder if you ended up with his project looking a little "Brilliant"?

He was coming in between 9 and 10, taking 1.5 hour lunches, and leaving between 4 and 5. he would have been fired sooner, but my boss was collecting plenty of data to back it up, just to be safe.
-

So far, it's been once every couple months, for an hour or so, on Saturday morning. And nobody complains if I take the time back, so I do for goodwill.
If the frequency goes up I'm going to be wanting something more tangible.
How does someone work 25 hour workweeks?
Parttime? A colleague of mine does 32 hours. Also gets paid 80%. Though they don't let us go lower than that here.
EDIT: Hanzoed.
-
I wonder if you ended up with his project looking a little "Brilliant"?
Yep, I got his project. Cleaned it up and finished it within a week. His resignation letter claimed another two weeks were needed.

My last place told me to stop skipping lunch because people didn't like that I was coming in at 8:30 and leaving at 4:45 (an full 45 mins before them).
Worked until 8PM on Wednesdays, and no one noticed.
Left at 3PM on Friday, and everybody loses their minds.Realized that they were more concerned on the image, than the accomplishments.

My boss probably wouldn't have cared about the time so much, if the guy was actually getting his work done. But when you aren't meeting deadlines and you aren't putting in your 40 hours, that's when he gets upset.
-
At that point I just blame TDWTF for that.
-
Yeah - if all work's getting done then I can turn up when I want and go home when I want (and the boss wouldn't really know anyway). Unfortunately at the moment, getting work done means working over 37.5 hours.
Overtime is paid though, so it's not too bad.

If you get it, you've given yourself an extra hurdle towards keeping it, apparently.

I wouldn't be surprised if, if you asked, you found out he was planning on leaving.
