@benjamin-hall IIRC I saw an article on this awhile back where the toaster was the icon it gave USB devices that didn't fill in some hardware type field correctly.
-
@blakeyrat Interesting. I wasn't sure if it's just a nice photoshop or a real .
-
@topspin It's even lazier than that.
Microsoft made a sample "how to build a USB driver" driver, which jokingly used a toaster (and that icon) as the device. The idiots who made that keyboard copied and modified the sample driver, but didn't bother to fix its icon.
-
Why does Windows even have an icon for a toaster in the devices menu?
That was my first thought too. Then from your post I thought: "Oh, they use this for misconfigured drivers so the manufacturers will see it and fix them before shipping. Clever!"
But as always reality is much worse.Coincidentally, I just saw that
StackQuack Overflow still runs their April Fools' joke:

StackQuack Overflow still runs their April Fools' joke:They don't now. I first wanted to say that they left it up until 1st of April was really gone everywhere, but you posted around 2018-04-02T22:16Z and the most behind time zone is -12, so by the time 1st was gone for 10¼ hours. The only explanation remains that all staff was too drank on Easter Monday to take it down.

And if IIRC this same fact has been mentioned somewhere in this forum before.

Well, you let a rock band into a hotel room, it's probably gonna get trashed.

...that was the joke in the reply tweet.
Also, I take issue with you calling them a "rock band".

Ah, is that an allusion to one of their songs? I only remember the band's name and the haircut. And I didn't pay enough attention to the songs mentioned in the Wikipedia article to make the connection.

Good god. It is a wonder MTV ever became a thing. That video looks like it was shot with a budget of $12 and a box of Slim-Jims.
-
@polygeekery It was. Wikipedia describes it as low budget, even for the day. It was a hit mostly because there weren't any other music videos to play.

I never said there wasn't, and goddamn that one is horrible.

@boner I will not be able to hear that song without thinking of that now.

You know, Slim-Jims are one of the few things that I really miss from the US.

That's the best explanation of the "loss" meme I've ever heard.
I actually thought people were posting just RANDOM-ASS images and claiming it was a reference to the "loss" comic (and that that was the joke, since there were so many terrible but recognizable "loss" memes in the past). I had no idea there was a pattern to them.

Also, the hover-text is 412 characters, well over the 280 limit for a tweet.

the hover text probably isn't sourced from the tweet. The text "YES. YES IT IS." is.
Edit: It's not. I attempted to tweet another example to you, but it isn't loading the image, much less the alt text...
