The 'Work Around Discourse Bullshit' thread (2)

Continuing the discussion from The 'Work Around Discourse Bullshit' thread (1):
Proposal: Use codeblocks to get around markdown inconsistency bullshit by simply disabling it.
Proposal: Compose post in <word_processor_of_choice>, print out, place on wooden table, take picture of it and then post as image.Downside: plenty of work involved
Upside: just how many large images can Discouse digest?
-
I'm actually mildly curious what happens when you upload an image, then have a remote site reference that image, and point discourse at the image on the other site. (A variation on @Maciejasjmj's redirect script, where it doesn't forward, the other site just uses TDWTF's image as a source)

Might as well, since OP is post 0. Which tickles my programmer coccyx. But I don't feel like giving you +0 is right, so I divided the topic ID with your post number.

There are limits to what it will self-host. Based on file size, free disk space etc.
Would post screenshots but my phone's browser is throwing hissey fits at the moment.

The suggestion would have had more merit if you actually did that for this post.
-
since OP is post 0.
No, it's 0 and 1 at the same time. If you get the url from the link button, it's post 0 (or rather nothing). But if you reply to it and quote it it's post 1. These two states are superposed, it seems. It becomes one or the other only once you observe it.
-
Problem: This idea does nothing to address the inaccuracy of the scrollbar caused by the infinite scrolling behaviour.
Solution: OP should edit all responses into the initial post.
-
Bug: Discourse requires a degree in quantum physics to use. This is a barrier to reading.
-

I think I'm firmly rooted in the "downside" faction.

and then post as image.
Also, what about those with poor internet connection? Can we just mail it in?

Actually, if you look at the post IDs of subsequent posts, it would appear that the post ID of the original post is 1, not 0. As evidence, consider the fact that @Matches's post is post 2 and your post is post 3. This indicates that the OP is indeed post 1, contrary to your unsupported claim.

Mail it to @codinghorror, he will take care of it for you. No internet connection can be a barrier to internet
discussiondiscourse.

I'm on a good few forums, and most of the totally monster threads tend to be "random image postage". For example, http://www.yakyak.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=17941, which is currently at nearly 30,000 posts, probably 80% of which contain pictures. How long do you think it would take for us to hose Alex's hosting?
-
As is DCs wont, http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/the-work-around-discourse-bullshit-thread-2/1983/1 gets micromanaged to http://what.thedailywtf.com/t/the-work-around-discourse-bullshit-thread-2/1983
There is no 'post zero'. Post 1, however, seems to be the same as post FILE_NOT_FOUND.
-
How long do you think it would take for us to hose Alex's hosting?
Not being privy to the details of the back end beyond what DC provides in the admin part of the site, I've no idea.
-
Can we just mail it in?
For those cases, we need a fax interface. @Onyx: could Asterisk handle a use case like this?
-

I'm not sure we could hose Alex's TDWTF hosting. I think Discourse runs in the cloud, on Digital Ocean IIRC. There was an issue with that provider a couple of days ago.
-
Well, digital ocean indicates $80/mo for an 80GB SSD and I think TDWTF is hosted at that servicer, though not necessarily that plan.Didn't scroll down far enough, 640GB SSD
We can solve this by uploading images 10GB at a time?

I'm not sure if Discourse is not scaling them down to more manageable proportions... worth a test, though. The "10k images Thread". Think I will look into that tomorrow morning. Will definitely worth the effort, if we can pull it off :-)
-
Even with scaling, you could cross the TB bandwidth threshold and either cause overages or site downtime for Alex. You good with not having the forums for a month?
-
You know full well this community can do 10k images. The only real question is the level of SFW.
-
Man they hose you on storage prices. First four tiers are:
- About $0.25/GB storage
- About $0.33/GB storage
- About $0.50/GB storage
- About $0.67/GB storage
After that, it's a consistent $1/GB. I ignored the RAM and transfer because they increase pretty linearly as you move up the tiers, so they would have negligible effect on the cost. As for the processors, it seems that once you hit the fifth tier, they increase linearly as well, so, again, minimal effect on the cost.*
I wonder if they'd let you buy 32 of the first tier plans and merge the accounts together. It'd be quite the deal.
* I know that initial costs could make a huge difference in some of these setups, but they probably aren't buying brand new hardware for you every month, so I don't think that really factors into your monthly usage fees.

Jeff said no forum ever has more than 10k posts, so clearly that's not a real forum, but something you faked up.

I'd just like to say that, despite my hatred for the fucking POS trendware currently running the site, I do not condone testing at what point Alex turns round and saysI'm not fucking paying that much
If I did, I'd have a script mirroring a livejournal picture feed right now.
It would be much more fun to do it on meta.d, after all.

I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!

That brings us back to "why isn't there an IRC channel for TDWTF?" observed not too long ago in this forum...:evil_grin:BUG: still no emoji for "evil grin"!!

Workaround, use

Since the total amount counts, this could be done from home. Just uploading plenty of pictures... idea for topic title: "Detail Image From My Home". A post can be something simple as a piece of dust, as long is it comes in glorious 4000x3000 pixels.
-

How did you get 10MB of homepage space with AOL in 1996? You were smart and used 4 out of your 5 granted nicks as CDNs.

Jeff also said that forums with 10k posts are rarer than unicorns... still looking for the unicorn this thread represents.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAyesAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGH!

I think that was Discourse forums with 10k threads. Given that we only seem to know of about 10 non-Jeff-run Discourse installs, that could be the case.
Anyway, here's our "unicorn"
Do not onebox this, please.
NOT SAFE FOR WORK

Hmmm... wait...
If there is a limit after which @system won't download the image... You could make a gallery!
- make an URL that redirects to an image that's too big for @system to download
- change the redirect destination every once in a while
- ???
- PROFIT!
-
@system doesn't follow redirects anymore.
-
I'm never clicking a link at work again.
-
tumblr should have been a clue. But a NSFW would have been a good idea (beyond warning not to onebox).
-
Given that we only seem to know of about 10 non-Jeff-run Discourse installs, that could be the case.
There's more of them. An incomplete effort to collect Discourse installs starts with this post and has never been finished.
-
Oh, they completely yanked it out? I thought it just got nerfed to not keep following them.
Bummer.
-
-
That reminds me I should probably write the next entry in the Asterisk saga. I actually started yesterday on the trip home, but I got distracted.
-
I'm never clicking a link at work again.
Sorry 'bout that. fucking pissforce hid the "standard" <not work safe> "tag" I prefixed it with. I've made it more explicitly not-work-safe now.
-

Since Dicsourse has not existed but what, 2 years max, I wouldn't expect a huge number of installs having hit 10k on a single topic.

So Jeff's wrong on two counts, not just one? Awesome

I think I remember the number being "3" including Sam's. That is indeed not much, but I think a lot of forums have trouble importing their old stuff into Discourseverse. Like TDWTF. @ben_lubar is at it afaik, but I don't know how much progress he has made.
-
I think he managed it on his machine but still waiting for the job to run on our actual instance.
Given his reports, I expect Discourse being unavailable for a few days while the machine this VM is on melts all the polar caps.

So let's hope no OCD-relevant numbers are in reach when this happens!

I just meant on this specific issue. I don't think any branch of mathematics can cope with counting how many ways in total Jeff is wrong.
-
"why isn't there an IRC channel for TDWTF?"
It's not like it's hard to make one.
EDIT: WTF?
