Status: Apple demonstrated today why they're not really suited to our school environment. We learned today that, because we didn't purchase our set of iPads through a "proper" reseller (instead purchasing them from a reputable electronics chain a kilometer from us which was 50€ cheaper per piece than said "proper" resellers) we don't get a "proper" vendor ID for said iPads which in turn disallows turning on management settings en masse.
Which means that our IT support has to change said settings on each and every iPad manually. Which, of course, is such an easy task that it just takes a push of a button once ... oh, who am I kidding. It takes 20 minutes per device.

Updated my VS2019 from .1 to .3. Now

breaks with a syntax error. Trying a full repair. We'll see what it looks like after lunch.

@Rhywden That'll teach you to pay your apple tax in full.

@Rhywden We're an iPad school, but we make everyone purchase their own and be responsible for it. Much They have to agree to MITM certificates to get on the network, though.

Edit: Fuck. It's my machine. Ok, time to blame Windows Update (since things worked before the cumulative patch that hit over the weekend).
EditEdit: Fixed. Seems something added a user-env variable adding stuff to the path. That royally hosed the MS script. Deleting that fixed everything.

Seems fair. Even if it's done nothing wrong this time, it'll do something at some point.

Status: Picked up bundled Ebooks for Perry Rhodan Neo - a slightly modernized version of the original SciFi novellas which started in the 60s (and are still going strong, mind).
The modernization was supposedly due to give newer readers a chance to make heads or tails of the canon while also making the technology a bit less hopelessly antiquated.
But, hoo boy, the just a tad racist/bigot views on races (be that human or alien ones) still shines through - the description of a Chinese general was actually cringeworthy (Chinese are masters at backstabbing while also channeling Sun Tzu, US-Americans are all cowboys who want to blow up everything if it looks at them in the wrong way and women largely don't exist).

Just installed Borderlands 2
- Can run in "full-screen windowed" mode
- Zero alt-tab problems
- Lets you skip all cutscenes and even the annoying logos at the beginning
- Lets you save wherever you are, and have unlimited save games
I think I won the goddamn video game lottery!

@Applied-Mediocrity Hot take: all cutscenes should have pause, fast-forward and rewind controls because they are videos.

Nier: Automata does! And it's not rendered video either!

Status: Switched compilation to a non-ancient gcc, now I have literally ten thousand useless warnings in the Eigen headers.
warning: enum constant in boolean context [-Wint-in-bool-context] MaySliceVectorize = bool(MightVectorize) && bool(DstHasDirectAccess) ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How is that an "enum in a boolean context"?! There is an explicit cast in there!
Going to throw an-isystem
flag in there, but really, why does it warn in the first place?
-
Status: Remember how I said sometime during winter than "next week they're switching our work internet connection"? Well, today is that next week! First of all, they had disconnected the network lab cables from the central switch for no reason, which made my morning fun. Then they were working at my desk in the office, because the incoming network cable to the office comes behind my desk and they were replacing it, so I went for lunch. And while I was eating lunch the staff room got an inexplicably large amount of people in it for being just after lunch hours, because they started the actual switch of connection at 13:15, it would take 10 minutes, and now at 14:05 those 10 minutes are still apparently happening. So coffee break en masse. Oh, well. I give it 5 more minutes then I'll do a work from home, because I need to get work done and I need an internet connection to do my work.
-
@topspin to be fair, this cast is -worthy. There are 15 ways this could be made better especially considering they're constants.

Why would you have to press it 54 times? Is it because clocks are upside down in Australia so they set their time backwards?
-
@hungrier Sure, let's go with that.

Meh. It's a bit-field, afaict, so it's probably not 0 or 1 but 0 or 1 << whatever_bit_position. The warning would make sense without the cast, but it explicitly expresses the author's intent that yes, cast this to a bool. Since it's equivalent to
(DstHasDirectAccess != 0)
I wonder if that would also cause the warning.
-
@topspin said in The Official Status Thread:

I wonder if that would also cause the warning. No, because you're using enum as int then, not as bool. It's one of those 15 less -y ways to do it.

I checked their repo and it seems already fixed in newer versions.
I'm not saying you can't improve it (although I think it's pretty low on the scale), but it is not using an enum in a bool context, because after the cast there is no enum anymore.

@Zerosquare A guy I read comics from publishes as PDF on google drive. Every release, first you need to confirm google's apology that it can't preview above 100MB, and that you'd like to download directly. Then you need to confirm that it can't be virus scanned because, you guessed it, the file's over 100MB.
Clicking confirmation boxes takes longer than the actual download.
