@HardwareGeek If you have not yet read Homestuck, that's a good time-waster. Bit more than an hour.

@pie_flavor Inability to find ways to waste time is not a problem that I struggle with.

Only sat on one jury - we were done just after lunch. I'm convinced the holdouts were just being stubborn long enough to get lunch out of it. (It helps that I get paid salary, so I don't have to worry about )
I'm pretty sure I've mentioned before that I served on one jury. It wasn't done before lunch, though. I don't remember how long the trial actually took, but it was originally estimated at 6 weeks, and it was close enough to that to not make a difference.
The one I sat on was a simple theft case. After we gave our verdict, the prosecution told us (as we finished up / walked out) this was a repeat violation.
I think I have also previously revealed that the jury I served on was a murder case. Wasted, because we deadlocked 11–1. (I was never sure, because it wasn't admissible in court, but I was under the impression that there had been an earlier trial, before the one we heard.) The DA tried him again after we failed to reach a verdict; he was convicted and, barring an appeal or clemency, is spending the rest of his life in San Quentin.

The other one I barely avoided (I would have been the next alternate) was a lawyer acting as his own council when arguing that the rental company should pay for full replacement value of his goods when he wrecked the rental trailer - really glad I missed that!
I would have wanted to serve on that one for the quality.

A game's soundtrack had seemed woefully incomplete compared to what I'd heard in-game. I'd tracked down and had a look at the directory they all seemed to be stored in, but couldn't get anything useful from the
bnk
files in there.Well I had another look and saw a whole slew of
wem
files I had apparently ignored for whatever reason and completely forgotten about. Did some research, found it was an audio format, found a converter and success! I'm definitely listening to things I'd heard in the game that aren't in the soundtrack. This had been sort of bugging me for a few months now. Time to see if I can somehow integrate them into the copy of the soundtrack I have…
Addendum: yep, everything I can remember is in here (what a shock!). Perhaps a few can cease being minor earworms now? Either way I'm pretty happy.
Update: oh, and the thing I found to do the
wem
s also knows how to handle (some of) thebnk
s… but they're all ambient sounds so it doesn't matter.

Ah, Audiokinetic. It's pretty neat, but on the game dev side it's really annoying that it doesn't allow you to omit the audio files from server builds. Bloated our packages by over 12x before I realized what was going on and hacked in a special ignore function into the packager...

The WAV files of all sounds are readily available - and the shot sound was fine, but it sounded very incomplete without the reload part. That's when I learned how to use Audacity - I recorded the sound straight from the game.

During my last math test, I recalled how painful the one before that one was without a calculator, and so remembered to bring one. Except I couldn't bring a graphing calculator and didn't own a scientific one. Not to worry, just borrow one from a roommate. After I get back, I discover that I've lost it, and a friend in the next class confirms that there was no calculator sitting there or being held by the teacher. Fuck.
So I go to the student store to buy a replacement calculator, all the while sarcastically thinking to myself "and then tomorrow I find it again". They're out of that model, and that model only, despite the website saying they have it. Well, there's no time to order it off of Amazon, since I left for home that night for spring break. Great. A week of me forgetting it passes, and then I remember it the last day so I order one and pick it up when I get back. I assumed that either the day after I picked it up I would find the original, or perhaps the day of (since it's the day after it ordered it). No such luck. And then another week of me forgetting passes. I'm not good at this whole remembering thing.
Anyway, yesterday at about this time of night I finally remembered to explain to her the loss and give her the replacement calculator.
Status: guess what I just found.

@pie_flavor where was it?
-
@Gąska In a sub-zippered pocket of my backpack that I didn't bother checking the first time because I have never stored anything there before.
-
@pie_flavor I thought it would be something like that. Been there, done that - but with a high school diploma, so the panic level was a bit higher.

Nope! That was apparently sent over digitally or something.

@Gąska In Finland it's sufficient to include a photocopy of the diploma, with signatures of 2 witnesses, in the form letter you use to accept the offered position (of university student). Or was, when I applied to university a decade and a half ago.

I do have teaching dreams, but in those the kids are always nightmarishly out of control.
The other type of dream I have involves driving. I never end up getting anywhere, but I'm driving. The car changes under me (sometimes to a bike or something ludicrous, sometimes to where I'm walking through a building that happens to grow in my path), and the road is just all wrong.

Don't worry. Those kind of dreams (and the ones of "OMG I'm going to fail this test and not graduate") only last about 20 or 30 years after you graduate.

@hungrier It looks like that's full of empty files.

@dkf I don't think any of them are empty, just tiny (1-2 KB).

IIRC, something like $15/day, so maybe enough to buy lunch, starting the second day you're actually empanelled as a juror. The time you're required to be in court waiting to be selected, interviewed by counsel, dismissed because you're a recreational arsonist, etc., or if the trial is done in one day, you don't even get that miserable pittance.
-
@Benjamin-Hall said in The Official Status Thread:

I suspect all teachers have those dreams. Or ones in which you're supposed to teach them on a subject about which you have absolutely no knowledge and no lesson plan. Or both.

I wouldn’t even get my pants on for $15/day.

Depends on the area. I had jury duty about seven or eight years ago, and I was paid $6/day. It was a two-day case and I'd completely forgotten I was supposed to get paid until a $12 check arrived in the mail many months later.

@mott555 said in The Official Status Thread:

Certainly. My recollection is from Santa Clara County, California, a couple of months ago. IIRC, it was $5/day when I was on that 6-week trial ~20 years ago.
