On the contrary, I actually seemed to get better while playing drums in Rock Band when I drank, because my brain would stop trying to sync my leg (for the kick drum) to one of my arms.
This is the problem I appear to have with musical instruments and stuff. Half-tempo is still fine, but anything more complex requires all the focus I can have. And even then a single bloop results in a "kernel panic". The most enviable characteristic of stage pros is that they can somehow go on as if nothing happened.
It's like I have one half a brain only or something. I haven't tried actively drinking to remedy it. Perhaps I should.

Why would they name them that when you can go with a signature like GetAwesomeness(T x, T y, T z) or a, b and c if you're feeling basic.

It's a tiny1 burst (or whatever) instance. I have essentially 300MHz continuous, 1.2GHz burst CPU. Because it's cheap.

@Cursorkeys What use case is this? Why would you need to do this?

@stillwater said in The Official Status Thread:
@Cursorkeys What use case is this? Why would you need to do this?
I've got a little file access helper (to cope with temporary AV file locking behaviour):
public static T TimeoutFileAction<T>(Func<T> func) { var started = DateTime.UtcNow; Exception lastException = null; while ((DateTime.UtcNow - started).TotalMilliseconds < 2000) { try { return func(); } catch (System.IO.IOException exception) { lastException = exception; } } throw lastException; }
This gives the behaviour I want, nice auto-retry with your result back or an exception you can catch, mostly copied from an SO answer.
Which is fine for input functions that return things, but when the input function has a void return you end up needing something like:
FileActions.TimeoutFileAction<object>(() => { ZipFile.CreateFromDirectory(subPath, zipPath); return null; });
Maybe I'm
ing on a better way to do it?
-
@Cursorkeys Okay now I understand why you wanted a void type. I don't know how you'd refactor this code in a way that would not warrant a void type, I'll let people who know better figure out a better way.
Also, how is returning Object is being pain in the ass in your scenario?
Also, can you please make this into a new thread?
-
-
@Cursorkeys In Java,
Void
is in fact a type, used for resolvingvoid.class
. The only valid value isnull
.
-
@Cursorkeys
You have found the only answer yourself. Overload it:
public static void TimeoutFileAction(Action func) => TimeoutFileAction<object>(() => { func(); return null; });
Fake edit: just one goddamn line and it needed a bugfix

That's the real distinguishing feature of a good musician: they don't let mistakes prevent them from delivering good music.

In order to earn CPU credits, you need to post a referral link in thirteen different web forums, and then have at least 39 first level and 117 second level authenticated sign-ups from that referral link. :pyramid_trolleybus:

Yep, sadly 'one function to rule them all' doesn't seem to be on the table I'll add the overload you suggested.

Sorry, I didn't mean to clog up the Status thread, I was just venting initially about the C# language choices for
void
.
I don't have the ability to Jeff anything but I'm quite happy if a mod wants to shift it.

STATUS Confused! People say that Twitter is full of bots but I'm beginning to wonder if it's just dead. Katy Perry has about 107 million followers but most of her tweets have about 4k to 10k likes. There are spikes to 40k to 70k every now and then but with that many followers it's practically a ghost town.
I know. Not the best measurement stick but wtf? Am I the last one to notice this?

@DogsB It is basically user engagement. Usually the same is true for Youtube and other forms of social media. Basically people just follow them because they are famous but don't actually engage all that much.
There are quite a few large youtube channels that have large number of subscribers (in the millions) yet they may only get 10-20 thousand viewers on a video. For livestreams the Youtube channel "The Young Turks" has a few million subs, however when they livestream they might have a few hundred viewers.
Basically engagement isn't just about a raw number of followers.

The day before yesterday's status:
Arrived in the morning, saw an email from a US-side colleague about a client having an issue with our software. Usually I'm not in a client-facing position, but that happens every now and again. Client is somewhere in the middle (geographically speaking) of the US, I'm in France, it's 9am for me so probably 3am for him, I'm not going to call Random Dude on his mobile in the middle of the night, no matter what he might have told my colleague the day before. So I fire him an email. 10 min later, he calls me. Looks like he really was waiting for my call. Wow.We spent the day on the phone. Well, almost the whole day for me (until mid-afternoon), I guess for him that was more like the end of the night and part of his morning, but still. He's a nice guy and knows his way around our software (and there definitively are a couple of bugs that we hadn't seen before!), and he had some interesting domain-related questions but... that made for a long, tiring and not very productive day.
Yesterday's status:
Working from home. The phone line got cut at about 10am and was only repaired at about 5pm, so I got a quiet day (albeit without my daily TDfix, which might or might not have been a factor in my increased productivity). Aaaahh...
Status: Friday. Caught up with random stuff I couldn't do the last two days because of, well, the last two days. Booooring!
Can I haz WE now?

I rebooted constantly, disabled Windows update, etc.
The underlying problem (now) is that
master.mdf
seems to be corrupted or something else is crashing the SQL server process, which prompts a rollback, which needs a reboot (because it apparently can't delete System32).Attempting yet another reinstall.... Seventh time is the charm, right?

it's a packet wrapper for a generic struct that gets unwrapped on the other side. At one point you can even inspect the array of bytes that will get sent over the wire.

I get a miniature writer's block after every half sentence I type. Writing anything takes ages.
Meanwhile my friend can smash out thousands of words in afternoon. I've no idea how he does it.I learned how to overcome this by taking a Film As Literature course. It
treatedtaught me how to use words like paint vs like chunks of meaning. Eventually I was writing A+ criticism blind drunk with basically no supporting points included.We’ve noticed.
