TouchWiz is simply one example of a launcher
It's not just a Launcher, otherwise you could just download it from the App store.
Not necessarily. Lots of proprietary stuff is "just a" whatever (email client, browser, phone dialer, calendar, etc), and yet not available from the Play Store.
-
@tsaukpaetra Being able to download something from the app store is not what makes it an app. Something packaged in an APK is what makes it an app. And you can download the TouchWiz launcher APK from third-party sources.

status Discovered how the Kindle informs you there's an update to the system... Tried to click on a 'see in store' link to get the next book in a series - "Application Error. Please try again." (close enough) Tried again. Rebooted. Tried again. Finally went to the settings and selected 'update system'. Ok, now the Store works...

And it will only work on a Samsung ROM. It will not work on stock Android.
Anyway, @blakeyrat doesn't want to use Samsung's E-mail app. He wants to use the Gmail app. His claim is that Google's OS should provide a way for Google's e-mail app to show an unread e-mail count, much like Microsoft's OS provides a way for Microsoft's e-mail app to do so. Seems reasonable enough to me. It doesn't, though.
-
@heterodox You and @blakeyrat keep confusing the OS and the launcher. He can complain that the Google Now launcher does not contain the capability for number markers, and he can complain that Gmail doesn't support any of the third-party launchers which do have the capability for number markers, and he can complain that Gmail doesn't supply a widget that's just the app icon with a number marker. But the OS is unrelated to the issue and therefore can't be complained about in this context.
-
@pie_flavor said in The Official Status Thread:

Fine,
s/OS/launcher/
in the last post. But it's a distinction without a difference for his use case. He is using the stock launcher that is provided with the OS. The stock launcher is part of the out-of-box experience for him. His out-of-box experience is not as good as he would like (and as good as as the out-of-box experience he has experienced with other OSes). He would rather not install a third-party launcher to fix it (though I believe he's tried and the third-party launchers suggested thus far use the notification badge API which is not what he wants). That's fine. I don't like installing a lot of third-party apps either. But then my out-of-box experience is fine. For me. All of my family members have about eleventy billion apps installed. That's fine too. The way someone uses their phone is very personal to them.

You sound like the people who make the distinction between
Linux

at every opportunity even though no one gives a shit. You must be really fun at parties.
Anyway, you should probably take this to the relevant thread if you intend to keep up this argument though. I do not.

Who gives a shit.
I bought a phone. It says fucking Android on the fucking package. I turned it on. It doesn't do what I fucking need it to. And it's something that every other major phone OS does do out-of-the-box.
That's all that fucking matters.

@blakeyrat I turned on my Windows box and Fortnite didn't come preinstalled. Wharrgarbl

@pie_flavor That's equivalent. A dozens of gigabytes game with top end technology compared to a feature that can be implemented in a few k and was on my fucking PowerMac 4400.

the point is that a smartphone has apps and you can choose whatever the fuck apps you want on your phone. If I understand you correctly you are applauding bloatware.
-
@pie_flavor Like I've said a million times, I don't give a shit whether it's implemented as an app or a trained dog or a fucking miracle from God, I just want the fucking feature on my fucking phone. Not sure why this is so hard for you.

I can't tell if you haven't been reading anything I've said up to now, or if you have and are just pretending you haven't so you can complain about being wrong.

My phone battery drains sometimes when I plug in the charger. I don't even.

Well, your charger sucks then. Not all chargers are equal, you know. Unless it's the original charger that was boxed together with the phone, you don't really get to complain that you haven't checked power output before buying replacement.
-
@gąska said in The Official Status Thread:

It is. Come to think of it, I've never bought replacement chargers in my entire life for any of the phones I've used.
-
@stillwater well, you got screwed then. I don't know how much human rights you have over there in India, but if I found out that the charger is too weak to power the phone, I'd demand refund for the entire thing.
That said, you'd probably like to buy a replacement charger with more watts.
-
@gąska The one I have is a charger that is advertised as "Fast-charging". Also I am suspicious my phone drains battery faster than the charger charging the fucking phone, even when the phone does not have background apps running. Maybe the phone is TRWTF. Either ways I have not investigated this matter

In India, they would probably give you a sucky replacement that you again have to replace. Not worth the time and money wasted.
-

You probably wanted "consumer rights" rather than "human rights" in that context, but thanks for giving me a chuckle this morning. :P

But what's the output? It should say somewhere how much volts and amperes it gives. "Fast-charging" can be anything from 6W to 30W.
Also I am suspicious my phone drains battery faster than the charger charging the fucking phone, even when the phone does not have background apps running.
A classic syndrome of not enough watts in charger.
Maybe the phone is TRWTF.
Maybe. But even then, a better charger would probably help.

Toby Faire, in many (most?) cases nowadays, "taking photos" isn't as simple as just reading the light sensor and saving .jpg, but involves HDR processing, stabilization, combining data from multiple sensors, etc, and it has to get done pretty quickly.

@stillwater in iPhones it's usually because the cable couldn't do the secret Apple handshake well enough and the phone decided it wasn't blessed by Apple and refused to charge. (But said it was charging.

It could just be coincidence in what happened... I was just trying to start the Store app. It kept crashing. So I checked for updates. It did, and then the Store worked... First time it's been weird in all the years I've had it...

That's my car. Plugged into the USB port and running GPS, the phone slowly drains. At least it's only about 2-3% per hour. For long trips (or low starting battery), I have to use the 12V connector. Same thing happens with my dashcam - but it drains even faster (from a full battery, it'll be dead in 4-5 hours). Thanks Subaru...

Try it your fucking self and when it works, report back.
