Status: TIL about needing to provide actual “definitions” of constants in C++ classes.
Also, I now feel sick to the pit of my stomach; that is awful and produces truly weird errors. In the linker.
If you can use modern C++, just use constexpr and all that linker nonsense goes away.

@fbmac will only give him the tip, and then he's done and vanishes-- realizing his mistake.

If you can use modern C++
This particular codebase is using C++14.
-
@dkf Then this should work for you: https://godbolt.org/g/jR2BwL
-
@lb_ I'll try… but it was only a problem in the first place because I was using the constant with
std::min
. Almost everywhere else, a simpleconst
was enough.

@lb_ said in The Official Status Thread:

And it works fine. Thanks. TIL indeed.

That's the business client. I said FUCKYOU, uninstalled that piece of crap and put the consumer version back on my work PC.

Got to see my car tick over to 50k miles on the drive home from work today.
Not too bad for a 2007 :D

No, you really really do not need cygwin on Windows 10.
Just install Ubuntu (yes, I am being entirely serious):

@ben_lubar The Microsoft Store app is useless. It depends on installing the Windows Subsystem for Lunix anyway, and you can launch bash via the start menu normally.

@lorne-kates when I need to do something like that, I would just write in the URL bar
data:text/html,<a href="whatever.m4v">link</a>
.Works great, cheers. Seems odd that it has different behavior if you visit it by a link as opposed to entering the path directly.

Oh my god. I misread that at first as 'install Linux'. That's amazing that that's in the Microsoft Store. I'll have to give it a try and see if I like it more. Thanks!

@cursorkeys It's just a wrapper app around the windows subsystem for lunix. Like I said, you could also just launch bash directly from the start menu. The actual setup that needs to happen to get Ubuntu on your computer is to go to Control Panel, Programs and Features, Turn Windows features on or off, and tick Windows Subsystem for Lunix, and click OK. Then launch bash to set it up.

It seems to have some issues too. I gave it the username 'admin' and it exploded:
I'll try uninstalling it and just starting bash then.
-
@cursorkeys Just don't use the admin account then.
-

Looks like that's not the case any more:
Guess I'll reinstall the Ubuntu App and hope I can pick a username that doesn't conflict this time.

@pie_flavor Ah, I see. You have to have the Ubuntu App installed then but you can then just use bash.exe instead of the Ubuntu launcher. Got it.
I misunderstood that there was a builtin bash shell that came with WSL.
-
@cursorkeys What? No, I just launch bash and don't have any other app installed. Ubuntu is the Lunix that gets installed when you enable the subsystem.

I guess mine's just weird then. Enabling WSL in Windows Features gives me the 'no installed distributions' message until I manually go to the Microsoft Store and download the Ubuntu App.

I started asking customers to remove power/data cables and 'inspect both ends for damage' after a tip I read somewhere. It works wonders and you don't have to exsanguinate them (with the ensuing ongoing-revenue implications that creates).
Doesn't help if you weren't the one talking to the end-user of course...
-
THE FUCKING POWER CABLE WAS LOOSE!!!
I'm calling the fucking pope to beatified, because I think this level of restraint is worthy of a fucking saint at this point!
@Cursorkeys I know I will get lambasted for calling some people incurably stupid, but no, not with these people. The follow-up call was something about a WiFi problem, fair enough, but the line of reasoning was "Does this have something to do with the monitor turning off?"
I also gave up, they always tell me they checked and re-plugged stuff, then I get there and the fucking headset (this is a separate, older incident btw, just using it as an example) IS NOT PLUGGED IN
Following a fucking cable is highly technical job these days, apparently.

Status: Sometimes the UDP packets my code is receiving are arriving 4 bytes short. No idea why. I've checked everything I can think of and I still can't spot what it might be. I know for sure it isn't some kind of deep packet inspection shit because this is still occurring with the sending hardware connected by a direct cable. Also it's only happening randomly. (I'm always using the same size of receive buffer; that's not it…)
I swear this sort of thing is guaranteed to give heart problems and make me lose my hair…

No you didn't. Because if you click it, the browser will see it is an m4v or whatever, and try to display it using a built-in plugin (like a video player, or a pdf viewer).
That's the entire problem.

status****no seriously fix the ctrlb thing plz
Tried to access one of the dev lab's websites.

Odd. Not only is the page there, but also we have a custom error page. What's going on?

Quick Gaggle search-- that's a ransomware. IT guy is running around right now disconnecting labs from the network/internet, setting up virus scans, etc. I'm running one on my computer (though I wasn't the last one to touch that lab, but just to be sure).
Hopefully it's limited to just the one lab's wwwroot. In which case, once cleaned, we can just blow it away and rebuild the website from source.

According to the W3schools page, the first FF version that supported it was 20, but that doesn't necessarily mean they didn't break it with some other media handler later
