Got the bottom and middle assemblies set up the way I want them, which includes all the extra motors. I did find out I'll need at least one extra extension wire; I ordered several but they won't be here till Tuesday.
The main boom should be easy sailing though, since there's no extra motors going in there.

Wait, you want to split up emails from the same thread into multiple categories?

They're not the same thread! And that's the point. There's no way to tell Gmail (or Inbox for that matter) "emails from this sender should never be treated as a conversation, keep them separate at all times".

No. Simple machines forum does that for me, apparently.

Did a propulsion test. It drove fine when it was just the lower assembly, but with the middle assembly added on it's frequently skipping when not on perfectly flat surface, or when in corners.
I have identified a place where I can gear it down further (replace a 4:5 by 3:6 ratio), but after I mount the main boom it'll probably be half again as heavy, so that may not be enough.
-
@pleegwat Apart from being jealous (that looks like an awesome set!) I note from past experience that you can get a lot better ratios per unit space by using rubber bands instead of gearing. You'd think they'd slip more, but the much larger ratios you can pack in work out much more effective.
All assuming you can't use a worm gear or two instead.
-
@dkf The newer motors don't need near as much gearing as the older ones did. The problem is that I was overusing the 3:5 ratio offered by some newer gearwheels - these are tempting because the large wheel is a bit smaller, reducing the amount of spacing needed.
I successfully opened up the lower assembly from below, and apart from replacing the 4:5 by a 3:6 I also replaced a 3:5 by 2:6 - I had a bit more spacing available than I thought. I additionally improved the mounting on one axle in the train so it doesn't have as much room to move sideward.
My collection of rubber bands is tiny - they don't age well. I'd have to find somewhere to get replacements. And the best ratio you can get is 1:3, similar to what you can get with gearwheels. It does need only half a unit of length instead of a full unit though, and it's a bit more flexible on axle distance.
I ought to make an image gallery.

I remember getting around 1:8 with the old motors…
-
@dkf With one band? I don't think I've got wheels that big.

The key was that the old motors had a bit on their output shaft that was smooth and a bit thinner, specifically to take rubber bands. Here and here are what I'm thinking of.
Yes, we're talking old stuff here!

So, my Prusa i3 Mk3 printer prints very well - as can be seen from the video of the spinner. And it did this from the start - even though I bought the kit and thus had to assemble the parts myself, the deviations seem to be minimal and I didn't have to tighten/loosen anything simply by following the manual to the letter. No skew on the heat bed, x- and y- axis perfectly perpendicular and no jamming / cork-screwing of the z-axis.
It's night and day compared to my previous model.
And the thing is silent. The cooling fan is the loudest part - and that is already a silent Noctua fan... around 35 dB from what I saw someone measure on YouTube.
Couple that with the rest of the amenities:
- filament sensor and recovery - i.e. if you run out the printer will notice, stop, eject the filament and prompt you to insert new filament, after which it will resume printing
- power loss recovery - in case of power loss, it'll move the head to a safe location and resume after power recovery
- removable sheet on heat bed - held in place by magnets. If you have multiple sheets you don't need to wait for the cooldown to get your print off.
- Automatic calibration of x-, y- and z-axis. No more twiddling around with screws and paper - you only need to set the heat-bed probe once properly and you're done.
- Two opposing gears to grip the filament properly - no more slipping filament. The old model always underextruded if I set its speed too fast. The new one? Prints at least four times faster and no slipping to be seen anywhere.
- Firmware under active development - contrast that with the old one which relied on firmware some years old (which necessitated that changes to the stepper ratio had to be done through recompiling via a very old version of the Arduino IDE)
And so on. This definitely was some 800€ well spent.

Yeah, that's well before my time. The oldest motors I've got are the old 9v ones. For this build I'm using the current power functions M, L, XL ones, controlled with sbrick.
I'll make a look at me thread with photos when I'm done. Unless a mod wants to fork this.

I will have to post of pick of me and my father (over 20 years ago) putting together the lego technic helicopter.
-
@lucas1 Ah, I remember that one. That was my very second set. Unfortunately I'm not sure if I can still build the helicopter - those plastic flex wires were rather prone to breaking and I'm not sure if all the long ones survived.
-
@pleegwat I think my nephew has what was left of the set and the manual which means (he is like 5 now) he has destroyed it.
-
@lucas1 For me, all of the rest of the lego didn't really get kept separate between my brother and me and stayed at my parent's place when I moved out. I think sisters' kids play with it when they're at the place.
However, the lego technic I always kept separate, and I took it along when I moved out. Some of it did break, like the aforementioned flex pieces and rubber bands. Also most of the insulation of the wires for the old 9v system eroded away, so that doesn't work anymore either :(
-

@pleegwat I was an only child until I was 6 so I was really weird about my toys.
My little sister wasn't interested in my lego, I am sure my nephew is playing with it and my matchbox cars and tonka tanks ...
