Status:
Thank you for your interest in Windows 10. The free upgrade offer extension for Windows 7 and Windows 8 customers who use assistive technologies expired on December 31, 2017
Nope, it seems to be working fine still. That's great, the laptop I found at the back of the cupboard is now on Win 10. Only one machine on XP remaining and that can't be updated.
Edit: Missing '7' rounded up and reinstalled :)

@cursorkeys All those poor people too busy at the Battle of Cangting to get their free upgrade...

Status:
Just taken a call from a recruiter:
Hey, I just got hold of your CV, are you still looking for a support role?
Not really. Is there a date on that CV?
No, why, when was the last time you sent your CV out?
2007.
... well thanks for your time.

I just updated a bunch of things including the kernel on my NUC. It took about two minutes and zero restarts. Meanwhile my gaming PC has been updating for the past half hour, restarted at least three times, creeped me out with a massive "Hi!" and reset my keyboard layout. Tell me again which is the more user-friendly system?
Status: Just installed a couple of updates for Windows. Neither required a restart.
Yeah, typically "Definitions for Windows defender" shouldn't require a restart.
-
Status: I'm almost getting used to "hybrid desktop mobile mode"...
-
Status: Made it to work. I want to go home and sleep more. And get the package I ordered, that I mentioned upthread last week.
-
Status again: USPS is weird. They say they got my package in the correct area by 5am, and assure me it will be delivered by 8pm, but haven't yet said if they've got it out for delivery at 10:30am.
-
@magus
That's because USPS tracking is batch updated in real time. The next update will be posted 5am tomorrow to tell you that they threw it in your bushes at 9am today.
-
Status: FFSFGAHAHA Why doesn't Perforce acknowledge my p4ignore file?!?! ARGH!!!!
-
Status: Well, that escalated quickly.
Is video streaming hard?
Not especially, why?
How about 30,000 endpoints?
It looks like MPEG-DASH is the solution to my problem. Need to have a chat to a few CDNs tomorrow but it seems like this is nearly an off-the-shelf-solution with NGINX-Plus and some CDNs. Protecting the control channel to the clients is going to need some thought.

Yeah, that's what I was doing all last week actually. Set up transcoding and everything, actually....
Well, not the "to the CDN" part, but everything up until that point.

A great song.

Status: Recompiling the Jenkins P4 plugin with an added log line so I can see what it thinks the p4ignore file should be called. We'll see what's going on, some way or another...
-
Status: I'm terrible at remembering names. Like, totally. When I went to job interview today, I forgot my interviewer's name and addressed him as Martin instead of Matt. I had trouble remembering if my long chain of emails was with Alex or Kate (turned out to be Agnes). I'm very glad I don't live in SF, where in addition to name, I'd have to remember everyone's pronouns.
-
Status: Bloody hell...
-
@tsaukpaetra that's one terrible name. Not only it sounds cringy, it breaks the naming rules described in RFC 1178.
-

It's OK, you won't remember it anyway :face_with_stuck-out_tongue:

I thought it was .p4ignore. Or whatever the env var pointed at (
P4IGNORE
?). It's been a few years, so it's hazy.

I didn't name it. Did I tell you about the machine named BobTheBuilder (which doesn't actually do any building anymore)?

@magus said in The Official Status Thread:

To make the pain just a bit less and subconsciously associate behaviours conducive to dismayed acceptance?

It just decided to

P4IGNORE

p4ignore.txt
sometimes. It really should be a configurable value (as it is in the perforce client itself), but #effort I guess.I do have all variations possible in the folder, btw. It just seems to be ignoring it.

Yes, basically. Instead of a broken sometimes-freezes-for-no-reason migrated VM, I moved Jenkins into its own jail. Now it depends on build slaves, named "Bobbo", "Bobby1", and "Bobby2" respectively.

No, you're typically not supposed to ignore the ignore file... :P

@tsaukpaetra IMO the name 'Bob' should be saved for your database server, which you should call Bobby Tables.

No, the db server is Jack, we shove all sorts of stuff inside it...

Or the neighbor stole it. Or it actually is delivered the day after tomorrow.

@dcon Those are less likely, because i live in an apartment complex where such things are usually left with management.

The first one, yes. The 2nd one is just as likely. Because USPS.

Status: You know when you give clear explicit advice, like "Don't give out anything called 'token' to anyone, ever!" and people go out and just flat out ignore it? And then come complaining about how they got hacked?
Yeah, no sympathies from $this.

status Fuck. Sometime between last night and now the wireless on (one of) my laptop died. The network is fine because I can connect with other machines. But not this one. Rebooting does nothing. Luckily it has a network port.
Well, it is 6 yrs old and it's the machine that goes to dog shows (can be pretty dirty), so I guess it's had a good run... Time to look for a replacement before it really croaks...

Make that 245. Also, highlighted, so that probably helps. Popular you!

Edit edit: Oh, nevermind I'm dumb. It's highlighted because you linked it. Way to go me,...

Except it's not, because clearly the only other thing that's being blocked by the ignore file (build.xml) is working fine.

That's OK. The RFC says explicitly that they're not rules, but rather guidelines that aren't supposed to be adhered to too strictly.

I wouldn't put it past the April Fools RFC writers:
1. Conventions used in this document
The key words "MUST", "MUST NOT", "DO", "DON'T", "REQUIRED", "SHALL",
"SHALL NOT", "SHOULD", "SHOULD NOT", "RECOMMENDED", "MAY", "MAY BE"
and "OPTIONAL" in this document do not mean anything.

It happened to my laptop too, and the reason was the antenna cables unplugged from the network card.
You could look inside to see if the antenna is connected.

You could look inside to see if the antenna is connected.Or the antenna breaks where the cable crosses the hinge, you usually see a really poor signal that kinda-sorta works when this happens though.
If it is the antenna cable, or the module itself going U/S, then it'll be available on eBay very cheaply. I frequently have to replace antennas and modules on our fleet of laptops.
