oh, it was just a few that bit it, not the most successful prank ever, but I'm easily satisfied

I just spent an hour ripping virtual hair because I missed an
&
in the function declaration, thus the pointer to the buffer wasn't being updated (I plan to fix that eventually, not my code) and causing core dumps on access because nullptr is out of range.Gotta love how it's very much "do what I say, not what I mean".

@topspin well, the first three primes are 2, 3, 5 and if you get this wrong already to the point that you forget 3 in the list, you’ll be fine because you’ll just misremember the following list harder such that you’ll convince yourself 18 is an acceptable answer.
It’s a bizarre (but not by xkcd standards) on “once you make a mistake, notice you make a mistake, you’ll make more and bigger mistakes, but in this case lean into it like a MF”
-
@Arantor sounds like this makes sense to you. Still doesn’t to me, it’s completely arbitrary. How do you arrive at 18?
-
@topspin if I were already fucking up hard enough to forget 3 was prime, I’d probably already also be forgetting 7 was prime and then I’d be into “is it 11, 13, 17 fuck maybe 18 who the hell even knows any more” territory.
I get the vibe he’s going for but I think it would have landed better if the combination had been 020513 for that reason.
-
@Arantor yeah, that’s not remembering, that’s brute forcing. But whatever, I’ll just conclude he’s wrong.
-
@topspin he’s definitely not right.

Status: Something told me to see if Penny Arcade was still going and then I saw a strip that flashed back to a very early art style and was saddened at how hideous the art has become over at least four changes. Is this how the average newspaper editorial style is born?

The sequence is 2, 2+3, 2×3×3. It's obvious! Next should be 2333...
-
@topspin I vaguely remember there being a website
isxkcdfunnytoday.com
that just had the static text "No." However, archive.org only has the version that redirects to xkcd.isitfunnytoday.com (and the earliest, a "coming soon" page)
-
@hungrier there was a time I would visit xkcd to see new things and it was funny, but that was 1500+ comics ago, and frankly... I don't feel like I'm missing out not visiting regularly.
-
@Arantor said in The Official Status Thread:

That describes many successful comics. Ultimate example, Garfield, but add another 0.
-
@HardwareGeek I'm not sure Garfield was ever funny though. Child me thought it was kinda, sometimes, but I don't recall ever laughing out loud at it. I definitely did to some of the early xkcd's.
Honestly, Garfield Minus Garfield is funnier to me.

Dunno, I guess after thinking enough how that number should fit with the prime numbers long enough you will commit the number to memory even if it doesn't make sense?
edit: It reminds me that no amount of explaining allowed me to get why the meme "loss" is supposed to make any sense or be interesting or whatever
-
@sockpuppet7 Loss was a point in a comic strip that was known for being immature and puerile that pretty suddenly went full on dark with an event that for those who go through it, is pretty traumatising. And then whiplashed back to normality a few strips later as though nothing had happened.
At best you could call it massively awkward, at worst hugely disrespectful of issues that dramatically fuck people up.
-
@Arantor and I never get how or why it would be funny or turn into a meme (other than the WTF moment you described of shifting from silly comics to a sad thing)

RSS is still a thing, fortunately.

Yeah, that's pretty bleak. I think SuperEyePatchWolf has a video dedicated to Garfield. It's a rabbit hole and a half.
STATUS 93% Lovecraft completed. God this is a slog. Lot of great ideas but fuck me, his writing style is annoying. After reading his work though. You really can see his DNA everywhere.
Going straight through his work was a bad idea. I think he would be easier to read at a story or two a week.
-

It wasn’t funny though. It was a complete “wtf why would you even” and why it became a meme is because it was such a jarring tonal whiplash that was so utterly poorly done that it is the practically the comic world example of the Brillant Paula Bean, peak wtf in a single crowning moment.

I know, but I have so little reason to have an RSS client any more, because the comics of old just aren’t going or if they are, they’re not funny any more.
I haven’t consistently read xkcd since maybe 2008. I do not feel like I missed anything significant.
-
@Arantor I'd mention a recent memorable xkcd, but I can't recall one.

Recognizance improvements continue! Used template so I could pass a temporary array into a function that splats it onto another array in the designated position (among other things), hopefully making for cleaner code?
It's saving some RAM in any case...

It used to be, if you didn't get an xkcd you'd check explain and realize why it was funny.
Nowadays, if you don't get an xkcd you check explain and find out it just wasn't funny in the first place.

Is there any good RSS client/webapp? When Reader was KBG (just checked, it was over a decade ago :matt_damon_aging:) there were a handful of webapps touted as a good replacement, but it seemed like none of them were. Has it gotten better since?
-
@hungrier I venture to say no because RSS has as far as I can tell slowly withered away in the absence of Reader. Feedly was the refugee-accepter of the day but glancing at its home page doesn’t fill me with any confidence for it.
-
@Arantor I had tried Feedly and The Old Reader at the time but didn't find either of them to be very good

Depends on what your needs are. The Old Reader is good enough for me, in that it was (and is) extremely similar to the KBG-ed Reader.

I use the one built into Thunderbird.

That, with one caveat: any code I wrote yesterday or before that becomes other people's code.

if you setup a nextcloud instance there is a plugin for that.
I still don't know why google shut that down. The infrastructure for it would have been barely a pinprick for them and they could have gotten ads into everyone's news feed without paying providers a cent.

For my own amusement, I wondered how large that would be. A bit over 7.5 trillion bits. Let's call it a 1TB number for good measure. No wonder my go-to tool for such calculations said
-
-
@Zecc You can work out 333 for yourself... as I've closed that window now.
-
@dkf According to JS 333 is 7,625,597,484,987 and 2 raised to that is Infinity.

I've just realized I wasn't sure if exponentiation was left or right associative. (inb4 "yes")
It is right associative, meaning 234 = 2(34) ≠ (23)4

The latter would be equal to 23 × 4 and is only 4096.
