Is logError broken?
It seems to work right in thousands of other places. I think this is the only one I've seen that seems to maybe not log a message.
-
@HardwareGeek Is the log output still stuck in the output buffer at the time of the crash?
-
@HardwareGeek That last thing will never happen here :(

@HardwareGeek said in The Official Status Thread:

Oh man, those. We have an automated UI tester that is always tripping on those. And, of course, we can never repro those manually.

It doesn't crash; it runs to completion but reports an error. As for being stuck in the buffer, it's possible, but there are a dozen-ish lines of status output after the point the error message should be printed, so it seems unlikely.

@Maciejasjmj I agree that it's mostly the fault of someone putting it in an instantiable object, but I feel like there's a giant red flag that everyone should see at the exact moment they consider using a library with the word "enterprise" in it's name. :/
EntLib is certainly... special (unfortunately it's not up to me to decide - I tried ripping it off and replacing it with something else, but no dice), but AFAIR both Log4Net and NLog use the static logger thingy.

Problem one: data corruption. Seems to be a hardware problem, but so far we haven't been able to really confirm that, let alone find the specific cause. Problem two: Occasionally the OS seems to go into the weeds before it really starts running user code.
-
@Maciejasjmj The main reason you'd use that thing is that it hooks into the event logs and everything else fairly well. The thing is, though, I'd just make my own and inject it where needed. It's not that hard. I could even hide that static thing inside an injected object or something if I had to. :/
The only time I ever used enterprise library was working with sharepoint, so it's permanently in the 'horrible' bin for me.

We log to a fucking file. (And AppInsights, but none of the frameworks has a solid target for that anyway). And all logging frameworks have an event log target, so even that's not a point in EntLib's favor.
I guess if you use the other "blocks" of EntLib - the data access stuff, the fault recovery stuff, etc. - it makes more sense? But we don't, we only pull in the logging block for no other reason that "that's how we do it".

Status: Not sending an email as condescending and insulting as the one I just received.
My coworker sent an email to someone on another team we'll be helping out asking how to set up his machine to run their code, since the information on their set up guide seems to be out of date.
It got bounced through three people, eventually reaching Monsieur Reading Comprehension. ReCom's response was to the effect that no sane person should even consider trying that anymore.
So my manager chimed in, asking what the current approach is.
Of course ReCom understood exactly what my manager was asking, right? Oh no, not at all: no one should ever even try you have to do it in this other environment.
ReCom could give some members of this place a run for their money at this point.

So I'm setting up my new phone by reinstalling apps that are on my old phone (the automated transfer only picked like a fourth to transfer) and I notice that the Microsoft account app which I have been using as 2FA for years apparently no longer exists in the Google Play store - they have a new app with a different icon that does basically the same thing. Apparently I have both on my old phone but only the old one was set up o_o I wonder why they had to make a new separate app instead of updating the old one...

@anonymous234 The worst part is, I know enough to recognize not only that someone edited a character from something else onto that pillow, but each of the characters and the shows they're from.
...and that the one the character on the pillow is from is a reboot of an old hero show from like the 70s. D: is wrong with me!?

Did it start out at 2 then?
Nope.
void doThing(...) { ... unsigned int errorCount=0; ... if (badThing1) { logError("ERROR: Msg..."); errorCount++; } if (badThing2) { logError("ERROR: Msg..."); errorCount++; } if (badThing3) { logError("ERROR: Msg..."); abort();; } ... logInfo("errorCount = %d", errorCount); }
Trying to write code on a phone keyboard sucks.
I assume you just missed to type the increment for badThing3 ?
Edit: nevermind, that would only hide your fault...

Status: Found some bad design in Exchange Server's handling of mailboxes. If you restore a mailbox and then delete the contents it sends a Not Read message for every item that a Read Request was originally requested on. For this user it looks like a significant number of the 20GB of messages were like this.
My mailserver is currently not responding as it tries to send tens of thousands of Not Read reports

That little clip is such a masterclass. There are so many small touches and blink and you miss scenes that make it so funny. Classic Simpsons really is in a league of its own.
