Given that Snapchat is meant to be semi-private, the account requirement actually makes sense - or would, if it wasn't so easily gotten around simply by shoulder-surfing or jumping on someone's PC or tablet when they forgot to log out. Or if, you know, people didn't save the incriminating stuff as unencrypted screenshots all the fucking time.
I don't know about the app requirement, that could be another futile attempt at preserving privacy I suppose, but since it really only applies to mobile devices anyway - because who TF uses Snapchat on a PC? - it doesn't cause too many problems unless the app itself is buggy and/or compromised (er... s/doesn't cause/causes/; s/unless/because/). It might present a problem if you want to use it on a public computer, but AFAICT that's not a use case for Snapchat.

Thus, if you want to say something catty about, say, Lil' Kim, all you need to do is add @stupidhoe to the post (assuming that that is her Twitter name, which it isn't - someone else actually chose to use it, which tells you most of what you really need to know about the sorts of people on Twitter).
What else could we possibly need to know about the sorts of people on Twitter?

Fortunately they're not expensive. Any reason you couldn't go back earlier?
-
@Jaloopa Ooh, I forgot about that use case (mainly because most of the companies in question don't having anyone reading their feeds, because it's just another kind of advertising, right?), and the one about using it to facilitate companies looking to give themselves a black eye by letting some loose cannon in the PR department post something stupid on the company's behalf.
And oh yeah, those apply to politicians, too. When they aren't being spoofed by someone squatting what most people would expect to be their at-name, that is.

Fucking retards.
Everybody does this now. I called a support line recently for our phone system--the robot asked me for my account number, and when I spoke to a human she immediately asked for it again. Apparently people being hijacked halfway through a call has become a major problem.

Pretty much, after building their early success on an open API and allowing loads of different apps to be developed. They then realised they had no control and other apps could do things like not showing Twitter's ads.

I find it useful for the aforementioned shouting at companies who are terrified of a Twitter backlash. I used to pretty much run my social life through it but now I'm a father I don't have a social life

Yeah, funny thing about that is adblockers let me not see ads on their website, either.
I would never give them any money by viewing their site without an adblocker.

......
you do know you can just call the activation line and manually activate the second windws install with the same product key by stating you are reinstalling due to hardware failure. then you take a snapshot of the base image and clone that for all your VMs. works a treat.

@accalia said in The Official Status Thread:

The problem is, as far as I can tell, that's not allowed: each VM has to have a separate license.
"Note: Unless you're running a volume-licensed version of Windows, you need a separate license for Windows running inside a virtual machine. The virtual machine's operating system is independent of the host operating system."
Now technically, I guess as of Windows 10, you could sign up for Insider previews and get around it that way.
-
@accalia all I know is I had to fight tooth and nail to get a particular required old version of Word installed on a VM because they reckoned it would need a license for every physical PC the VM could be moved to, and for every user with access
-
@FrostCat said in The Official Status Thread:
not allowed
it is not prevented.
though to be fair i just use the VL license key i get as part of MSDN that work pays for. it's a dev machine so that covers it nicely.
still, it's a neat trick to remember to know that it is possible.
you can use the same trick to move an OEM license if you do a computer rebuild and want to use the original computer's license.
-
@accalia said in The Official Status Thread:

I can't see how to do it, so it can't be done. Or can't be done by me, which might as well be the same thing.
The thing that I was aggrieved about? This data management software I'm working with has the capability to generate permanent URLs to the files it manages. Those URLs have the session ID — typically only valid for about 30 minutes — embedded in the URL via a query parameter. What were the authors thinking!?
-
@accalia said in The Official Status Thread:

That doesn't make it not illegal.

...which is actually legal. The snippet above said "you need a new license unless you're using VL.

Who is "they?" MS or some bean counter in your company?

@Jaloopa Only until they run out of the registered user limit
-
@HardwareGeek bean counter. We're going through a MS audit at the moment so they're being super careful

Nothing, when it is applied to integers. When it is applied to strings though…

serious question:

No permissions it seems. (It's probably because the person setting things up just didn't think of opening up the config ability to anyone else. That particular project's full of that sort of stupid, taking great ideas and making sure that they can't reach their full potential due to small amounts of lack of forethought.) My plans for using
in serious work communications will have to wait for another project.
