@blakeyrat Well that's probably why you couldn't move. I got nothing but a "register with Team Nintendo" or whatever and "connect with Google", and choosing the first one got me a website where I had no way to create an account, and the second got me "please try again later".
-
@FrostCat Hm. I started it up again. I can't say it "works" but it's doing something different now. It's drawing like a Google Maps outline of my neighborhood which it plopped those three pokemons on, but I still have no idea how to move my character. And there's no on-screen help or menu button or anything. Totally stumped.
EDIT: if I click him and drag his feet move like he's walking, but he doesn't actually go anywhere. I clicked a charmander, and it went into "AR mode" with the camera and everything, but failed to actually draw a charmander on the screen, and I walked through the whole upper floor of my house. So.
This is not convincing me that AR is anything but a stupid pointless gimmick.
EDIT EDIT: Oh wait the Charmander's icon is actually in my neighbor's living room, does this app require HOME INVASIONS?!

Yes, the servers are down, come back later.
Essentially, as soon as you tap a Pokémon, it zooms into it and you're promoted to toss a Pokéball at it. This doesn't work if the server doesn't acknowledge the Pokémon is there.

@Tsaukpaetra Good thing they have errors and timeouts and error-checking, then. Because they wouldn't want gamers to just think their game is broken garba-- OH WAIT TOO LATE.

It's his boundless optimism. *guffaws*

@Tsaukpaetra I visit gaming sites, so I have people telling me how amazingly great Nintendo is like 47 times a day. But the flaw is: I assume people are lying jerks, and they always are.
I didn't want a fucking charmander anyway. Where the fuck was pikachu!

@candlejack1 polyamory is hard enough work for three, making four would be even harder indeed...

@candlejack1 Not all poly relationships have to be transitive ;)
Love is a directed, often cyclic, graph
-
@Yamikuronue and it's not necessarily "every person in every combination" either, my current situation is that all persons involved feel the same way about all other persons, but this is distinctly not the norm, in fact...
-
@Arantor I mean if you think about the human condition, every person who has met another person has some level of relation and feeling toward that person (unless they're a sociopath maybe), so you can draw a complicated directional graph of feelings people have toward other people, romantic vs non-romantic. You can get into situations where person A is in love with person B who is in love with person C, but while person B loves person A, person A absolutely cannot stand person C because person C killed person A's parents...

Oh hey, this place is full of pedants. Did I make an error here?
Now let’s look at this another way: let’s say we’re building a brand new application and we want to know what the response time should be. We want to handle 1,000 simultaneous requests, and we know we have 4 servers to spread them out among. We’ve looked at responsiveness and we figure our pages need to load in a second. So each server is handling 250 requests and needs to respond in 1 second so people don’t get anxious. That means our services have to respond in 4 milliseconds, or some of those users will be seeing a degraded experience.
-
@Yamikuronue How many simultaneous requests are you handling in each server? Is each server only capable of doing exactly one thing at a time?
-
@dkf I did say 1,000 simultaneous requests.
@dkf said in The Official Status Thread:
Is each server only capable of doing exactly one thing at a time?
That's the part I think that was making me sit here and go "wait, this sounds wrong"..... how should I word this to be more accurate?
-
@Yamikuronue You probably need to talk about the throughput being 250 requests per server, and the upper bound on latency being one second. Don't simplify too much. However, if you know that each server can actually handle 10 requests at once, you can then talk about wanting a 40ms turnaround time. Though that really ought to be for the full stack, not just an individual server; the latency that you care about is measured from the customers' viewpoints. So remember to include all the effects of load balancers, caches, network delays, etc.
And don't insist on hitting things exactly. Instead talk about wanting to get a certain proportion of traffic (90%? 95%? 99%?) within that SLD. Give your self a little wriggle room!
-
Hope that sounds reasonable. :)
-

We want to handle 1,000 simultaneous requests, and we know we have 4 servers to spread them out among. We’ve looked at responsiveness and we figure our pages need to load in a second. So each server has a throughput of 250 requests and a max latency of 1 second. If they can handle 10 simultaneous requests, each one has to return in 40ms or some of those users will be seeing a degraded experience.

@Arantor said in The Official Status Thread:

I have this theory that that's got a lot to do with why polyamory is mostly banned: effectively, it's easier to just say "no" than to deal with whether or not everyone gets along.
I think I read somewhere than it's common in polygynous societies for each wife's family to have a separate house. Probably that's done as a mitigation of the above.
-
@Tsaukpaetra Yeah, the actual problem is that if you ever stick them to a poor surface (e.g. paint-on whiteboards) or if you ever pull them off after sticking them the first time, they won't stay stuck.
1 is the number of times you will stick them on something.
