?
How would I do that?
Pull them out as far as they go, then push them together again. Repeat 20-odd times until the ratio of invectives per cm of movement exceeds 1. ( is indeed appropriate, only in slow motion and with much more force.)
It will help if you put a screwdriver through the bottom and stand on it, and another screwdriver through the top to pull at.

@ben_lubar My reaction: "Hahaha, stupid AI, doesn't know shit..... wow."

@ben_lubar The mountain and the Roosevelt ones are actually decent responses. Not entirely correct, but not utterly wrong. Unfortunately, both are like the responses given by computers, and not like the responses given by anything intelligent.

@cartman82 I'm not really confident, but I think it's just randomly drawing from a large table of descriptions, and the author is just pulling people's leg by claiming it's an image recognition program.
@ben_lubar I keep forgetting to ask you what you think of ESR's proposal that Lojbanists adopt a new orthography (his specific proposal was to use Tengwar, but I can't figure out if he was serious or just going for the contrast between Tolkien's highly figurative and poetic conlangs and the highly precise and logically-structured Lojban). Any thoughts on that? On a related note, do you think it would make sense for Lojban to shift away from decimal-base numeric systems to one rooted in binary (probably chunked into octal or hexadecimal, most likely the latter as there's already an established hex form in the language)? Just curious; I actually got interested in the language myself several years ago, but as with all my attempts at learning a second (non-programming) language (whether constructed or natural, with the list including Latin, Attic Greek, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, Polish, French, German, Mandarin, Portuguese, Hindi, Bengali, Turkish, Hebrew, Arabic, Irish Gaelic, Finnish, Basque, Sindarin, Klingon, and Lojban), I never got very far due to lack of focus (what a surprise...).

I did that a few times trying to figure out how to get them into the wheel well. I may exercise them some more, to check.
I'm going to take some good photos of the springs and spin this off into a car thread, since I'm sure people are loving page after page of "how is Lorne's car fucked up today BOING" talk. =)

It's like headphones only you can hear-- if you stand perfectly still, facing an exact direction, and never, ever move.
-
@DogsB Also, I think IndieGoGo and Kickstarter need to adopt a new rule. Once a project has reached a certain threshold of "views with referrer thedailywtf.com", the project is shut down and automatically posted on ridicule.indiegogo.com.
.... except "fuck you give me money". That's immune.

The costly bit is the user tracking and signal processing so that the spot you can hear the sounds from follows you around.
Gloves!Headphones!

Gloves!Headphones!Which I'm sure works perfectly and will never, ever fail. As long as you stand perfectly still.
Also, as long as there is never more than you in the room.
Also, even if there is more than you in the room, that no one ever walks between you and the speaker.
And also also, even if there's no one else in the room, as long as nothing comes within line-of-sight of you and the speaker.
Also also also, as long as you never walk too close to a wall, or other acoustical surface, which would bounce the sound back at you and really fuck your shit up.
-
@dkf Well... the only use case I'd have for that is music while I sleep. I can't use speakers for raisins, and headphones get in the way. I was even considering the headstrap ones because I can't stand earbuds myself.
-
@Lorne-Kates No, it can work with all of those (though maybe with more than one transducer, depending on the complexity of acoustic environment) and that's why you need the fancy-ass signal processing. AIUI, it's the same sort of principles that are used by modern mobile phone masts (multipath routing, etc).
-
@Onyx Put a speaker under your pillow.

Also, I thought I had heard of this shit before. In 2007. When a company developed this as a theoretical weapon to selective target enemies with sound-based attacks.
It become a gaming piece of shit.

@Lorne-Kates Have you tried RockAuto? Their prices were pretty decent. I think I got a set of two struts/mounts/bellows for ~$200 including shipping for my '06 Altima.

And all that is done in real time, with no lag whatsoever? Because we all know how cell phones don't have any lag, dropped packets, dropped calls, etc.
So as long as you have MULTIPLE of these devices, all throughout the room-- in every room you're in-- hooked up to a energy sucking computer, it may work with minimal sound interruption?

{checks purchase history} Hey, that is where I ordered them from! Neat.
The two rear shocks were $150USD, plus ~$20 USD shipping.
Funnily enough, they don't have lots of Elantra stock, either. I guess Korea is clamping down on exports?

@Onyx They use them sometimes at theme parks to aim announcements at the line for the ride and not out to the people just walking along the paths.
I'm not sure it's $550 worth of technology involved, but it's certainly an old invention that's been around for awhile.

Status: after three weeks of waiting, finally got the replacement display for my iPod.
Took the thing apart, unscrewed the case, very carefully put the display in, screwed it back, put all the million of brittle ribbons back in and shut the case back.
Fuck, display works, but I get the sad iPod. Take it apart again, reconnect the HDD ribbon (fucking ZIF connectors, it's almost impossible to accurately put the thing in), try again.
Now nothing works. Okay, take it apart yet again, get the battery ribbon back in place, reassemble... yay, it works!
...except in the process of opening and closing the case, I cracked the fucking display in the exact same way as the other I was replacing. Fuck you, Apple, and your unopenable iProducts.

Um, actually, you need to be a GENIUS to open them. Maybe if you did what you were SUPPOSED to do and take it to a GENIUS, you would have a working iPod.
They wouldn't fix it, mind you. That's literally impossible. But you would be brainwashed into buying the NEWEST and GREATEST iPod. It's absolutely perfect (until the next one comes out).
Also, usb cables will randomly fail for absolutely no reason and the iPod will throw a fitshit, but it's PERFECT!

Statusbolded text****: realize that new-post streaming in is randomly borked. It may again just be the Status thread (because big threads Are Different). Fuck ZIF connectors. Maybe they are zero insertion force, but they don't have any god damn holding force which is what you actually need for a reliable connection

Yes, but differently. In fact I'm pretty sure that up until yesterday, NodeBB would fail differently, too.
WYSIWYG. Apparently difficult, if you ignore the decades of work that's already been done on them.
-
Also, NodeBB still can't remember my scroll position when I refresh a page.
Scroll to bottom. Hit F5. I'm back at the top.

Hey look keyboard navigation doesn't work.
