Status: I just learned that in Python, escaping double-quote inside a single-quoted string works.
Fuck Python.

Now learn how PHP does this shit, and rejoice that Python is, shockingly, more cromulent.

Still in the preparation stage. Also, I have lots of computers.

Prepared the Mac install flash drive (that sure was a chore) and Windows install DVD. While doing that, shadow copied the C drive onto an empty disk. Then fixed up BIOS boot order and BCD stuff, so now I have booted from the cloned drive (

).Explorer is kind of crashy and I'm sure there are other issues, but that's probably due to drive letter change. Whatever, the important thing is I have the old version of OS available, to yank out settings and stuff.
Next step, wipe my SSD, recreate with GPT, split into two drives (for Win and Mac), then reboot and install the two OS-s.
BTW, boy does an SSD make a difference. It's amazing how things drag when loading everything from a magnet drive. If anyone is hesitating upgrading to SSD, don't. It's amazing.

TIL: When you remove C drive, explorer goes away and doesn't come back.

Silly fox, it does.

And everyone laughed at me for putting 32GB of RAM in my new build. You wouldn't see mee having the problem @Ben_Lubar is having with not enough RAM.

Was it ECC memory or did you pull a ?

Status: trying to figure out why each previous character seems to cover over the next character.

It's put each character in a rectangle that is the same colour as the background. Why…
Be aware that rotated text seems to be one of the sternest tests of font rendering engines; very few developers seem to test this sort of thing, and so you're much more likely to uncover weird bugs (I've found problems in the past in both Windows and Linux, and in fact it was the same bug despite being totally different codebases). Though it appears that you might already have the letters decomposed into paths, which simplifies getting it right hugely.

Status: Why can I get mail server A to send to B but B can't send to A? I have the MX records in DNS, allowed anon auth, turned off IPv6, offered a as sacrifice etc etc. No e-mail server, don't give me some bullshit about 'Can't locate the domain'. I just nslookup-ed on you and it worked!
I don't even know how I got A->B working.
-
STATUS: Wow, Edge is such a piece of shit. Every few minutes I have to "recover" a tab that froze. Worse then Firefox.
I actually like the way it looks, but this is surprisingly buggy and awful.

Is the server using stale DNS information?
Also, what firewall ports are open for both servers for inbound connections? 25 and 587 are kinda necessary for sending, 110 and 143 for client connections on POP and IMAP.
-
I'm 99% sure all my issues are PEBKAC but I don't feel think building out mail servers on different domains on the same LAN should be this hard.
All the default well-known ports were already open in the firewall but I turned the firewalls off anyhow. It is just a test environment that will never be front-facing and I don't THINK that was the issue I had going A->B initially. Just shitty fucking SMTP error codes that amount to "You may need to reboot or flush DNS. Not sure which. Good luck."
For what I need the config I have will work as a hoopty environment until the real
sexpertsadmins finish building out on Monday. They have my sympathy and I'm now likely to cut them some slack on the time it has taken for then to spin up.

STATUS:
Finally got El Capitan installer to load. The trick was in updating my BIOS until it was fully UEFI compatible, and using a special switch to make it not use broken NVidia drivers.
TIL even in their log messages, Apple is condescending.
-
Oh and additional STATUS:
Apparently, even though I specifically initialized disk as GPT, Windows has silently reformatted it to MBR and happily proceeded with install. Turns out, whatever mode the install media is in, that's the mode Windows gets installed in. No choice.
Even worse, there doesn't seem to be a Microsoft supported way to generate a UEFI/GPT install media. They either create a "legacy" DVD of FAT USB. You need to use some open source utility called "Rufus" to generate a GPT based USB media.
What an amateur hour by Microsoft.
I'm doing that now, and off I go to reinstall Windows from scratch, then OS X. Sigh.

STATUS: Windows 10 installer has a flashing blue screen, with messages like "we are happy you are here".

Stay classy, Microsoft.

yeah... Microsoft really goes out of their way to not support dualbooting any other operating system.
-
I mean seriously, who writes this copy?
Yeah, it would be a lot better if it said, "you're not that important."
You people get upset about the dumbest things. How is showing little ad-copy lines during install a lack of class? What did you expect it show during install, cognac reviews? Tips on buying the freshest caviar? Would that have been classy enough?
-
Well. Reviewing in my memory the installers for Win95, 98, ME, XP, Vista, 7, 8 I recall the installer idle copy talking about features and enhancements.
It has gotten progressively less specific through the ages until we arrive at Win10, where it just says "THINGS ARE NEW AND SHINY!"
It's kind of patronizing, but it's also more realistic for normal people (who are now actually expected to do OS upgrades, where historically that was for nerds)
-
Sounds like you've spent way too long looking at those flashing messages, buddy.
-
I'd like to ask what part of what I typed led you to that conclusion, but I know the answer is just "nothing, it's random neuron firing".

The red curry I made for this week's lunches... It's so fucking spicy I'm wondering where I accidentally added the critical mass of uranium.

It's put each character in a rectangle that is the same colour as the background. Why…
It requires Blending to be enabled but I later found out it also requires Depth Test to be disabled - somehow Depth Test screws up the rendering of the text. All fixed:
I've literally never done any real graphics programming before other than using SFML, so this has all been quite a learning experience for me.

it also requires Depth Test to be disabled
Depth Test hides polygons that are behind other polygons. Including transparent polygons.

Today I learned. Thanks, this world of graphics is still pretty weird to me.
