How does that work around things like chairs? I mean the kind with legs, like a wooden chair, not, say, a recliner.
Pfft. Like Boomzilla would own anything other than Laz-E-Boys and couches.
My Braava's bump sensor is sensitive enough that it usually turns around before pushing the chair. Sometimes it'll push the chair a bit. But if you put your chairs back where they belong after standing up, it's not like the Braava can move them far.

Ah, ok.

Who uses a laz-e-boy at the dinner table?
-
Someone who wants to be very comfortable? But then again, why would you, when (IIRC) you can get a tray-table attachment?

Generally pretty well, thanks for asking.
Sometimes it will go into follow the wall mode, sometimes it turns around and goes another way. The whole path seems fairly random, but it's generally pretty good at getting the entire floor. And then when it thinks it's done it goes back to its charging stand.

There's a competitor now which uses LIDAR, called the Neato Botvac. It has a stupid name, but Ars says it's way better than Roomba.
It's also $450. Ouch. My Braava was half that. And does swiffer-like mopping.
Nobody yet made a robot cleaner good for a house that's 90% wood floors and linoleum.

Mine has a little sensor in the front that seems to sense stuff. It's apparently an infrared sensor. It will slow down as it approaches a wall or something. Narrower stuff, like a table leg it doesn't seem to see and will actually bump into it.

My roomba works pretty well. Aside from a few rugs, we have laminate and vinyl flooring and it picks stuff up better on there than on the rugs.

Also, the fans in the front-row like to grab.
Also also, drug and alcohol abuse cause incontinence, so maybe tuck that thing away after all we're getting charged extra by the venue for cleanup.

I got the Braava because it works like a swiffer (I have old beat-up 1927 hardwood floors, with lots of dents and stuff. They still look beautiful after a good waxing treatment, but they ain't spring chicken boards), but it requires too much manual effort and it's only about 18 months old and already the charger is going out. :(
I'm thinking about replacing it with the Botvac 85, but man. The $$$ is driving me batty. Maybe if I come into some money.

Yeah, that's a totally different thing. More of a mop than a vacuum. I think a regular roomba would work well.
Our old Roomba died. We got one this Christmas when it was on sale at Costco. The Botvac looks cool, but yeah...$$$

Exactly; that's what I liked about it. You can use dry-swiffer sheets to "sweep", and wet-swiffer sheets to "mop". But neither works as well as, say, my Shark steam-cleaner which I still have to pull out once a month.
The charger dying means that whenever it's plugged-in charging now it does it's little "I'm done charging!" song about every 45 seconds or so. It's fucking annoying. I've thought about going at it with a screwdriver and forcefully removing its speaker, but then I wouldn't be able to hear it beep when it got stuck behind a piece of furniture, so. And natch there's no way to turn off the "I'm done charging!" song.
I called iRobot support and to their credit they sent me a 100% free extra battery, hoping it was a battery issue, but that didn't fix the problem, and now the warranty's out. Oh well.

I seem to remember someone took a picture of herself in the shower with a guitar, posted it in the XKCD forum, and parlayed it into some sort of creative endevour. A web comic, maybe?
I'm not NonDiscoSearching their forum for it, though.

What the shit.
Instead of fifty more vague posts that sound like someone's Facebook updates when they were 12, maybe a link to the Toxic Hellstew, or at least "more deets in Lounge" ?!?

The website that they talk about in that comic is a real website they set up.

depending on how things go in November i may be looking for a change of country.... What exactly is the Immigration policy like over there?

Not sure, I've only done any research for EU nationals migrating to here, not American citizens, so the rules are different but as a professional person with skills, I wouldn't imagine it would be that difficult. Easier than the other way round, for sure.
-
From this site that seems pretty decent:
The main ways that US nationals come to the UK are as visitors, as fianceeโs/spouses/civil partners of UK or EEA nationals, or tied to studies, employment or investment.
It's a sign!
But seriously, the best place to find out is probably here ;)

Yet another shitty recruiter:
Hope you are actively looking for job change now, as we are forwarding your profile to our clients.
Gee, thanks for asking first, and thanks for telling me who you're submitting them to. So now I have to tell everyone else, "I might have already been submitted for this position, because some jerk is submitting my profile without letting me know."
That wouldn't be quite so bad if they were a good agency, but they're one of the ones who, when I quote my rate, say "The client is only willing to pay ($rate - 10)," then later try to shave a few bucks off that. If they're the first ones to get my resume in front of a client (assuming the client likes me, which hasn't been happening), then I'm stuck working for them at their lousy rate.

Bill & Ted is about as faithful to Doctor Who as those Grand Moff Tarkin movies were. ... maybe more so.
And yes I am watching Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure while working from home. Netflix is awesome.

huh. i tought that if you are an EU citizen, then you can go wherever you want inside EU.
-
You can go, yes, inside the Schengen area. But more permanent residence, including taking up nationality, that's different.
-
and what's the difference? i'd guess voting and?
-
Voting is one, the fact you don't automatically have a permanent right to live/work there but are somewhat tolerated for doing so. Tax is also complicated.
I'm not in this boat myself, I'm a UK national but royal_poet isn't.

Edit edit: they made-up space by using the World's Shortest Micro-USB Cable.
You should see the stubby little thing that Fitbit sends out. Like 4 inches.
And it's a proprietary connector (though it has reason to be what with USB taking up so much footprint and being so hard to waterproof). And they use different connections for every other model.
And they don't sell longer ones. Unofficial knockoffs are the only way to get more than a few inches, and they tend to be a bit dodgy in the "actually fitting the connector" space.

I think I said last time I watched Bill & Ted that this is the smartest dumb movie ever made.

Dear Microsoft Office 2016 Installer:
#FUCK YOU!
When i launched you to upgrade from 2013 to 2016 none of your applications were pinned to my start bar. You know why? BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT THEM THERE! I now find that each and every application is pinned to my taskbar, which i now have to undo. so fuck YOU
oh, and don't think i'm forgiving you not giving me any option on what apps to install which means i now have to go uninstall skype myself because i don't use it at work. because i hate you for that too.
Oh shit. Wonder what it's going to do to me... Upgrading from 2003 to 2016. (The price was right - I got to visit the Microsoft Company Store during my visit last week)

My Android updates can take anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour. It seems to be recompiling every application, every time.

Status: So I have been writing this sort of visual novel/choose your own adventure game engine for a friend in my spare time, and got the bright idea to do it as a Universal Windows app, Yesterday, I decided that it might be fun to see if all their promises were true and it would just work on WP, so I decided to try starting the emulator...
...and it worked. Perfectly. I deployed the app, ran it, and everything was awesome.
