I've never used Node.js before. When I run npm install it gives me this extremely helpful error message
Error: ENOENT, stat 'C:\Users\myUsername\AppData\Roaming\npm'
EDIT: According to ToiletOverflow apparently that error means I need to manually create that folder. I think it's working now.

i've never dared run nodejs on windows, i'm afraid i can't be of much help there.... sorry.
apparently nodejs on windows is a whole mess of WTF.
this article is the first one tat came up on google for 'node.js windows howto' maybe it will help? http://dailyjs.com/2012/05/03/windows-and-node-1/
-
Node.js on Windows is painful. Would not recommend.
-
It only seems to like new posts, not the existing 1100 I haven't read nor liked.
-
2nd comment about it. Alright, if I find time today at the office, I'll work on fixing it. I'm sure it'll have to change to liking one post at a time, just a bit more frequently.
-
What's really weird is when it fails, it spits out "Syntax Error" messages to the console.
-
it keeps you up to date (that's the follow option) and schedules like binges for 23:40 UTC to get you caught up. that way you don't run out of likes throughout the day.
should be spitting otu lines occasionally like:
Processed 2578 posts, found 71 new posts for a total of 150 likeable posts
it'll stop those once that last number goes over 1k. it'll check that list periodically and top it up if needed
and one line like:
Like Binge scheduled for 17h35m from now

So, the temp manager that was above me & my team has been replaced by the team lead of the team working beside me ... spend the rest of the day in 'hallway' meetings putting out fires of people who fear the changes.
-
Alright, got a new version of my script done this morning that appears to be working (as I'm running it now), and features skipping people should that be your wanting.
And as I was typing this post, it was causing me to get 503s, when it was running on a 3 second cycle. Not even sure if slowing it down will help much because it may try liking when their own polling calls would happen and they'll block each other.
Still need to tweak it given the ignoring users feature, especially if they spam a bunch of posts.
-
I'm writing the outline of the novel I've had in my head
Going to work on the actual writing of it for NaNoWriMo?
-
That's kind of a plan but it wasn't the plan I had in my head.

Status: Trying to build a release of something. I think I got past all the stupid hard-coded paths and non-escaped variables in the batch files that prevented the build/release scripts from running on the build server, but now it's just sitting and seems to be doing nothing. Script output says "building" but nothing is consuming CPU time or RAM.
-
This might be silly, but I just now noticed you can flag your own posts as off-topic or spam.
Maybe they hope spammers will be kind enough to report their own spam?
-
NaNoWriMo
Oh yeah. That's just around the corner, isn't it?
I wonder if I can actually get around to it this year.

Did you miss the whole "Node is cancer" thing?

Status: Waiting for the SQL Server 2008 R2 installer to run so I can change the configuration on an already set up server just to add the Full Text option, and it is taking a very very long time on a 2008 R2 server that is doing absolutely nothing but this installer.

Status: Waiting for the SQL Server 2008 R2 with Advanced Services installer to finish downloading so I can get it on the server so I can run the installer again and finally do this one thing.
...
And it's still only Monday.

Anybody who actually implements a Fibonacci in any language whatsoever in response to his original post is missing the point.
-
well at least implementing it recursively.
if you'/re doing FIBB for any reason other than benchmarking you're always better just looking up a list of the numbers.
-
Going through all my old applications to remediate for a new system of record and new databases. Come across one that's written in Java (that I don't write in) - It's got surprisingly few WTFs outside of some obvious 'I don't work with this language normally' items.
Color me mildly surprised. The app itself isn't great, but it's pretty straight forward and easy to tell what my thought process was a few years ago.

Status: slightly regretting posting 99 luftballons in the songs thread...
turns out Pandora has like 5000000000000 versions of the song and i'm now listening to a cover in what i think is russian....
-
well at least implementing it recursively.
No. He gave Fibb as an example of a general point he was trying to make. He didn't actually care about Fibb per se.

Status: Considering introducing a new error message to our software. After triggering the same error three times, a user would be told "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result."
The main software package that I work on has automatic error reporting built in. For certain categories of emails, the errors are not only logged, but emailed to the dev team for immediate resolution. In order to enable us to get additional information regarding the circumstances of the error, the emails include the user name associated with the error. It is not common for us to receive 50 copies of the same error message from the same user within a 10 minute time span.

Status: I was never aware how *bad* some of the code I'm working with is. And how some really obvious bugs just crawled by unnoticed. Bugs that would have been found immediately if the place I'm working at actually did testing.
Whoops.
Wait, you work at my company?
-
How about:
"We understand that this functionality is important to you and it's not working. We're sorry for the inconvenience, rest assured that a high priority trouble ticket has been generated for this incident and we're working diligently to fix it as fast as possible"
and then if they get that message 3x show your orginignal idea.
and if they get that message 3 times the message: 'Please stop; it's broken. clicking the button won't make it go."
and if they get that message 3x force reboot their computer.
oh, this isn/'t the evil ideas thread?
-
Wait, you work at my company?
Or mine, or like half the forum's population's employers.
-
Not at mine. The one female IT worker we have had since I've been here got her contract terminated due to incompetence.
-
and if they get that message 3x force reboot their computer.
Well, it's an browser based app, so rebooting their system would be tricky. be easier just to log them out of the program and lock their account.
Oooh. That's not bad ...

-
Current status
-new help desk ticket
-assigned to me
-no repro
-no errors in logs
-no information from user other than basic "it won't work in X way"
-nothing I can do
-close out ticketThis is half my day.
-
So it couldn't be yours, but not because you actually do testing.
Well, I do testing. But the fools before me didn't. When I first started here, I was supposed to immediately be adding new features. Instead, I spent the first 9 months fixing bugs.
-
-
TICKETS?!?!
Yeah, that's not my place you work at. We don't have those.
-
Oh, I guess not. We currently have 3 systems for tickets.
-
Oh, I guess not. We currently have 3 systems for tickets.
We kind of have 2.
- Our help desk software. This is where all bug reports and feature requests are supposed to get sent, but it really is not made for tracking software development so we only use it to communicate with the end users. The actual help desk uses it for more, but that's about it.
- A shared Excel workbook. This is where we actually track our development tasks and projects. It's very WTFy, but at least it's better than what we used to have: nothing.
As part of our upgrade to TFS 2013, I'm going to try and move us off of the Excel workbook into the task tracking the TFS provides. We'll see how well that goes ...
-
Ahhh, we have our outgoing help desk software, our incoming one, and the software that we use for project tracking. So far, we don't have much duplication, but you do have to search a bit to find anything.
-
Well, it's an browser based app, so rebooting their system would be tricky.
You know you could do that with an ActiveX control, right?
-
You know you could do that with an ActiveX control, right?
Rebooting implies that it's usable again after it shuts down.
-
FrostCat:

Implementation details....
-
You know you could do that with an ActiveX control, right?
Sure I could, but that wouldn't get me very far. ActiveX support was discontinued as of IE 10, IIRC. Not to mention that our IT policies settings have ActiveX disabled on all systems for security.
-
How is it that thread has 25K posts but 5K views?
Discoviews have evolved over time. Originally, a logged in user only ever counted as a single view. I think that may have changed to one view per discoday. Given that likes have kept going up here and in the Likes thread, I suspect something like that has happened.
Likewise, non-logged in views have always (since disco-wtf happened, anyways) been something like one view per IP per discoday.
-
t our IT policies settings have ActiveX disabled on all systems for security.
nice to know that place is not a complete WTF.
-
if you'/re doing FIBB for any reason other than benchmarking you're always better just
looking up a list of the numberscalculating directly using the golden mean.OK, maybe not, but it's still cooler.
