The entire concept is fucking stupid. What if the user just types:
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
To make that moron prompt by dumbshits "generate entropy"?
How can they even get "generated entropy" from OTHER APPS, unless they were running with crazy-admin permissions they probably shouldn't have? Like, "our security code RELIES on us diving into another app's event queue or memory." How bad an idea is that? "It's security software, but we piss all over all security best practices! Welcome to gnupg!"
Goddamned, open source, is there anything you do that isn't shitty and broken?
-
@blakeyrat, are you unaware that operating systems provide entropy sources that are seeded from, among other things, I/O timings?
-
If the OS already provides it, why the fuck would you need to spaz-out on the keyboard? Doesn't the OS have, you know, previous keyboard spazzes to serve-up?
Look, there's no fucking way you're going to convince me that that CLI abomination is the best way of accomplishing their goals. If that's what you're trying to do, give up now.
-
That interface is also available in GUI form, and also available for Windows. And the system I was generating the key on didn't have a mouse, keyboard, or monitor connected, so good luck getting entropy from anything other than disk or network I/O.

Ok!

Status: I'm glad the MASH writing staff learned their "Frank Burns" lesson when they added Winchester. The character's a lot more interesting when he's not just a foil to the "main two" doctors, but also a well-rounded character in his own right.
Frank Burns they basically turned into a cartoon character.
Other thoughts:
-
At some point, the show turns into not-really-a-sitcom-anymore, where the majority of the episodes aren't really humorous at all. The doctors and cast still banter, but the plots aren't based around a humorous situation anymore.
-
The 8063rd, their sister hospital, gets name-dropped like every episode. I wonder if they ever go there/show it.
-
The show got progressively worse until the cast change which got rid of Frank Burns and brought-in Winchester, and from that point forward has gotten better and better and better every episode. This show didn't even begin to his its stride until like 2 full years after most shows would have been cancelled.
-
The dream episode which Netflix says was a super award winner was actually pretty tame and lame.

The kernel generates entropy from a variety of sources, including randomness in various hardware timings and possibly a hardware random number generator. The app receives this randomness from the kernel; it does not generate it itself, nor would it be able to.
The kernel does save previous randomness to serve up, but in this case apparently it didn't have enough.

Yes! My master creation is ready! I have harnessed the power of jsonb to reach the heights of denormalization yet unseen by mortal men!
My crufty old INNER JOIN query took the whole 25 seconds to complete. Disgusting!
But fear not, for the dawn of the new jsonb age is upon us!
EXECUTE!!!

...
Well, back to the drawing board.
STATUS: Attempt 2. Standard denormalization, no fancy crap. From 20s to 5s. OK, I can live with that.

Re: MASH
I would bet, say, a cold frothy iced coffee beverage, that we do not ever see the 8063rd... not sure enough to raise the stakes to "lunch".
All good observations and spot on - but don't forget Harry Morgan.
Loved Blake, but he was essentially unable to provide much dramatic tension with the "wait, Radar, am I in charge..." routine.
Col. Potter made the show much more complex - and yes, less of a traditional sitcom.
MASH has an interesting structure with so much of the tension/conflict existing with forces/"characters" outside the cast itself.
Did you manage to catch the last McLean Stevenson episode?
Klinger is wearing his Carmen Miranda outfit, but had to fall into formation before zipping the dress...
Status: remembering the line "Up.., Sir".
Also, different ep., "that's two 'e's... as in 'Freedom', that's what confused you."
Also, yet a different ep.,Col. Flagg: "If you don't close your eyes, I'm not leaving "

THAT IS NOT WHAT GOOD DEVS DO!
People who understand why the rules are there are allowed to break the rules.
-
yes, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't feel bad about breaking the rules.

A few times, IIRC, but not very often.

The dream episode which Netflix says was a super award winner was actually pretty tame and lame.
Is that the one where everyone had nightmares, including Hawkeye's arms being removed before surgery? Remember when that episode was aired. It probably was groundbreaking, then.

Yeah maybe. It had some good effects for a 1970s sitcom (or whatever MASH is) budget. Helps that they did most (all?) of the episodes on film and not video.

The contractor's laptop that I joined to our domain last week (after being given an incorrect request) is back with a shiny new profile, I'm sure their IT department hate me now.
I was asked to look at it again and this time add network drive shortcuts and install our version of Sage Line 50 (2013).
2 Hours later
I have got to the point where Sage support have set up registry merges that have to be applied before using each of the various versions of Sage the contractor has for his various clients. The contractor is looking distinctly unhappy about being one forgotten click away from corrupting important databases.
I've suggested he consider using separate VMs for each version of Sage to avoid this madness.

I remember it being pretty moving. I think it requires stuff like empathy to really get. Different things affect different people differently. Film at 11.

I get my kicks from breaking the rules.

Am I gonna have to flag a bunch of people for not recognizing a line from a not-very-obscure 80's song?

I'm currently lying in bed on my side. So below my waist is my left pants pocket.

I assumed they were all whooshtrolling.

that depends, is it globally recognized or regionally?
would you flag people who were not alive in the 80s (there's a lot of them around) or those that were < say...5 by the time 1990 rolled around (there's even more of us)

Well, as a data point, do you know what song I meant?

no, but then my knowledge of americana is microscopically detailed in some extremely narrow areas, and merely microscopic everywhere else.

Maybe it's better if you're not binge-watching, too.
It also aired at a point in time where the entire family would be watching the same show out of necessity (only 3 networks, only 1 TV per household), and I'm sure it would creep the shit out of anybody under the age of 14 or so.

put a two-tone test through his integrated sound,
I don't know what a "two-tone test" is.

I don't know what an "opamp" is.

I know that a lot of stuff that scared my wife and me when we were kids gets a "Meh" from our kids. But then they get freaked out by stuff that we never would have predicted.
OTOH, we're continually amazed that something like Hannibal is on network TV.
