Status: Is there no way to keep the fucking Dock and top bar away when in full screen? How do people play games on this Mac piece of shit?

I'm literally sitting here on a big pile of cash
That sounds uncomfortable. And probably not ergonomic. Kinda defeats the purpose of the keyboard if your wrists don't hurt, but your /(back|butt|legs)+/ do.

That sounds uncomfortable./quote]It's not so bad—I scrunched up a load of banknotes and put them inside a pillowcase, so it's actually reasonably soft. Not like sitting on a load of coins or anything like that, oh no.

To be fair, part of that is down to the query now running a 31-day window instead of 28

Meh. Details, details...

Status: remember that penny stock I own? I just got the bankruptcy claim paperwork for it. Should I file a claim for my $3.60?
Actually it's the value as of March 18th, so... I guess it'd be about $9.
-
will it take less than $9 of your time to file to claim it?
of so then yes. otherwise, hey free paper for firelighting.

Alright then, Status: FreeBSD on MacBook part 2. Going to nuke the whole partition table this time and give BSD the whole disk. Also maybe I can smash a hole in the screen or burn out the HD while I'm at it...
-
Why is replying to the OP suddenly different to replying to the topic? How DISCOURSISENT!
Anyway:
- I do need a OSX partition, so that rEFIt has somewhere to live if nothing else.
- OSX 10.4 can be persuaded to fit into 3GB of space if you turn everything off.
- I'm giving up on BSD10, let's see if 9.3 is any better...

Status: Thinking about writing a little webapp, mostly for myself, and trying to figure out what language I want to use (straight JS, some altJS, ...) and wishing there wasn't a choice that didn't apparently suck ass. Currently gravitating toward TypeScript I think...
(Some people take the opinion that JS is, at its core, a nice language, and it just has a bunch of "unfortunate" design decision that you have to avoid when coding. While I've not done much with JS, I really dislike weak typing and as a result disagree with that, and view it more as a language with a rotten core that happened to get a few things right somehow.)

TypeScript probably sounds like your best bet, unless you want to go all out crazy and use C++ compiled by emscripten...
-
JS is a great language for what it's designed to be. (An embedded scripting language for things like, say, making macros for a word processor or running AI in a video game. The stuff people have Lua doing now.) Thus it was a good fit for a web browser and web browser-like products like ActionScript in Flash, for example. Long before people thought, "hey, HTML! What a great way to write a GUI."
It's terrible as a language to create applications in. It has, for all intents and purposes, zero standard library functions (some really incomplete and crappy math and date stuff). No concurrency, or any reasonable way of adding concurrency. No namespaces or equivalent. Its OOP is extremely bare-bones. Etc.
To make things worse, it's been inexorably paired with DOM, probably the most poorly-designed API of the last 20 years. Except EFL, apparently.
Anyway, that's not to say JavaScript's a great choice for building applications on the web, just saying it's not JavaScript's fault. JavaScript's a little like this Jetta:
You should feel sorrow for it, not hatred.

Status: FreeBSD 9.3 boots now! I had to manually install the bootloader.
:/
. Oh well.
Now, if I set it up and leave it going overnight, it might have compiled X by the morning. (Why am I doing this to myself?)

Status: Well hello there!
I think I found patient zero. Off to an isolated VM with ye, it's time to do some dissection...
Excuse the absolutely horrific photo. I am NOT connecting this to the network to transfer a screenshot and didn't have a decent camera anywhere. Also, shaky hands due to fucking sprinting to yank the network cable out of it if connected.

Horrific, indeed.

It got the point across, I hope, which is enough for me. I'm not sending it to any competitions.
Also, I think I moved my hand at just the wrong moment (damn digital cameras and their delay, never could get used to that) but I honestly couldn't be bothered to re-take the photo :P

I meant the wallpaper, actually.

I meant the wallpaper, actually.
I'm kinda happy to see it. As in, we found a different computer that we thought was to blame for the infection, found the suspicious file that I decompiled and found out that it is, in fact, a part of something similar, but not the whole thing. It's possible that the AV managed to neuter the rest of its executables but this one was left hanging around.
This one seems like a clear winner (that email is appended to filenames of all corrupted files), meaning I have something to dissect now. With any luck it's one of the simpler ones that just
XOR
stuff, or it has the encryption key embedded in the executable which means I could reverse this thing with a bit of luck.
-
That's a low effort infection. Not even a fake antivirus window or anything.

Hey blakey, what game is that? I'm back into Terraria for my podcast game, but I'm getting tired of it.

If the Dock and the menu bar are visible when using a full-screen program, you probably should drag the program to the Trash and find another, non-broken one.
Some programs may put the menubar/Dock in auto-hide mode instead of hiding them completely, though. Move the mouse cursor away from the top and the bottom of the screen and they should disappear.

Yeah, that's the problem. They auto-hide, but at the same time, game expects you to pan the map by dragging mouse to screen edges. Super annoying.

Starbound, they FINALLY made the "early access" version complete enough to be worth buying. Highly recommended-- if you like Terraria, you'll love Starbound. I've actually played through the alpha they originally had on sale on Early Access, I took that screenshot because I finally hit armor tiers that weren't in the alpha.
EDIT: DO NOT buy Edge of Space, which also bills itself as "Terraria in space". Edge of Space is crap.
-
Is Starbound past the "erasing all your saves every two days for updates" stage yet?
-
I dunno; I've never been on the unstable branches.
From my perspective, it was a "alpha fun for a few hours", then "nothing for 18 months", and "now an actual video game".
Have I mentioned that I'm developing a bad hate for Early Access? Even for good developers with a track record, it seems to bring out the worst in them. Like, for example, not updating the "relatively stable" branch of Starbound for FUCKING 18 MONTHS!
-
Aww man, they don't even tell you straight up how much it will be.
Mailinator them?

I don't know what was installed, it was via Steam...at least a year ago so I hope it's more stable now.

Steam lets you install different build "channels" of the same game. You went out of your way to set it to the unstable build, because it defaulted to the stable alpha build.
-
-
Yes. I said it hoping your brain would explode like an 1960s Star Trek computer. Did it work?
-
I didn't go out of my way to install any channel, I just installed it via Steam like I installed every other game.

I have a few... ideas. Depending on outcomes of some plans the proper one will be implemented.
-
"install via Steam" and "install unstable release" aren't mutually-exclusive, so you have told us nothing.
If they made the unstable branch the default install, I have an even worse opinion of early access. Because that's shit.

Also, re: @Onyx.
I did buy Edge of Space and was very disappoint. That's why I skipped on Starbound the first time, I was burned out on space-based Terraria wannabes.
Just pirated Starbound and love it. Forking out the cash now.
-
I wanted to do a video on Edge of Space and all the terrible decisions they made, but I gave up because one of the terrible decisions they made was to make the game look like brown blurry unreadable mush on 1080p monitors. And I only post HD vidzzzz.
Starbound uses this neat new technology called "color".
-
blurry unreadable mush
Ugh. I hate that, and for a while almost all modern games were like that.
It's sad when you start up an old 8-bit game because you want to see something that uses a richer palette than a new title. Fortunately, that trend seems to be ending now.

So it's dog day in the office and i have my dog. and he needs a walk. so of course he decides to take his poo on the curb where the sidewalks gets pretty narrow.
because he's taking a while to do his business i step off the sidewalk to let a pair of men pass... apparently they were gay and holding hands (i didn't notice, i literally saw them out of the corner of my eye and stepped off the sidewalk to get out of their way) and one of them goes apeshit on me for being a "
fucking homophobic cunt
"....
DUDE! I WAS WATCHING MY DOG POOP! I DON'T CARE IF YOU ARE GAY OR NOT! I WAS BEING POLITE AND GETTING OUT OF YOUR WAY!
.... Maybe i should have maced him.... but then that would have involved the police.... and that's never a good way to spend your lunch break...
