Looks like another 504 storm closing in...

Another? We just had one!

Yay!!

I wonder if @accalia can pull logs from the DB, I saw it spike up to 110s on servercooties and then just gave up and went to make coffee. Not sure if it was lag or 500s (I'll add that to the template today I think, currently it's not obvious).
-
I saw it nearly break 150s…

Ah, that hat. It's an excellent hat. I recall reading it. Been too long.

Status: Figuring out how to do an equivalent of throwing the controller against the wall to an emulator.
Seriously, the thing is trolling me. It randomly decides not to accept input, then it decides to just invent a keypress...
Either that or the game is trolling.

Status: just spent 45 minutes or something trying to figure out why some C++ code was making GCC unhappy, and I still don't fully understand it. If there are any C++ gurus who feel like seeing if they can help... Edit: looks like I got a quick answer.

Koenig lookup claims another victim? (OK, I'll go and actually read the SO before commenting further...)
-
I often use a Dualshock3 controller or an ok DS3 clone when emulating games, which means that the issue of not having a throwable controller doesn't apply to me.
-
I'm down to keyboard at this point, need a new controller. Had a Logitech DualShock clone but the buttons are pretty much done for.
Freaking rubber domes under the buttons, they are probably falling apart by this point, so the buttons tend to stick after I release them.
Next one it's microswitches or nothing. Might even buy some on eBay and use existing electronics to build an arcade-style controller.

I get ADL (at least mostly, I would never assert I "get" C++; we have a love/hate relationship :-)), I just didn't know that's the only kind of lookup it does at the point of instantiation (i.e. that it skips unqualified lookup).

Xbox controllers last forever, work with all games ever, are relatively inexpensive.

Xbox controllers
I was always sceptical of their shape, just doesn't seem like something I'd enjoy using, but I never tried one so...
are relatively inexpensive
Not so sure if they will be here, and if it's worth to import them. I seriously don't know a single person who has an XBox. It's all PlayStation around these parts. So the price might be a bit steep since they won't be selling them in droves.
-

They're pretty comfortable; I've done two-hour Forza races with them without any real difficulty
-
-
Eh, you know, Luddite and all that
Even if I got one I'd still want another one with a D-Pad in a more comfortable position. This Logitech had some kind of "precision D-Pad" and it drove me insane when playing something old in an emulator on it due to how easy it was to hit a diagonal direction by accident. I just can't imagine trying to play some of that stuff on an analog stick.

ckeptical of their shape, just doesn't seem like something I'd enjoy using, but I never tried one so...Personally I far preferred them to the dual shocks, but it's been several years since I've used either.
-
Not so sure if they will be here,
I don't know where "here" is, but it sounds like "here" sucks. Maybe you should most out of "here" to there.

I remember being bitten by this kind of thing recently as well. I had a paif of functions:
namespace a { template<typename T>Stuff get_stuff(); template<typename T>Stuff get_stuff(T t) { return get_stuff<T>(); } }
Which works exactly as you'd expect with expressions in namespace
a
, but failed catastropically with something like this:namespace b { struct Thing {/**/} thing; a::get_stuff(thing); }
I just wrote a
b::get_stuff(T)
for the time being. I keep meaning to go back and see if there's a less awful solution...

They are probably the most comfortable controllers ever made, although I can still only play Minecraft for about two hours at a time. (Then again, I have the wrists of a 60-year-old, so...)
-
Holy freaking tits, finally! I was beginning to think I'd never claim it.
(You changing your badge to Emeritus was a bit of a giveaway, though... )
-
I have the wrists of a 60-year-old
Give them back!
Somebody had to say it.
INB4: No, don't give them to me. They're not mine. I'm not a 60-year-old, yet.

Not until next year anyway. :P
-
Not next year, either. Fewer years than I would like, but several.
-
I would imagine that everyone is fewer years away from sixty than they'd like...
-
Not everyone. Most people under, say, 20-ish would like to be older. A lot of people over 60 would like to be closer to it.

Why would I ruin all those perfectly good logs? I need barrels to hold ale!
-
Surely stone barrels would work better. Or perhaps barrels made of mushroom staves.
-
Alright then, I would imagine that everyone under the age of sixty is fewer years away from sixty than they'd like.
Consequent: Anyone over the age of sixty is further from sixty than they'd like.
-
Mushrooms big enough to make barrels out of count as trees. I can make pots out of stone, but they take longer to carry around because they're heavier.

So? Dwarves live longer than cat cookies. Unless they live in a Dwarf Fortress, I guess.
Also, insert your own plump helmet joke here.
-
everyone under the age of sixty is fewer years away from sixty than they'd like.
You're still missing the very young who would like to be older, therefore closer to 60. Also, saying "everyone (who meets some criterion)" is overstating the case; when dealing with people's desires or opinions, there are always exceptions. For example, it is likely there are some very elderly people who would like the notoriety of having achieved a record-setting age. Finally, while I think your second statement is probably true (if you replace "Anyone" with "Most people"), I don't think it is actually a consequent of the first.

Status: I have a VM shut down to delete some snapshots so I can expand the volume, because Hyper-V is fucking rubbish. I just lost my connection to the facility, and the VM is still down, because Hyper-V is fucking rubbish and I had to shut the VM down to do what I needed to do. Unless the connection comes back up before I go to bed, I now have to have someone there when they open.
...and that is fucking rubbish.

It's obviously Hyper-V's fault that your connection sucks.
