Either way, while I have no problem diving into the CLI and getting my hands dirty when things don't work, what I saw of Arch so far seemed to indicate there's a greater need to do that than on Debian for example.
Yeah, AFAICT, an Arch install requires you to drop to the CLI and manually calculate partition sizes, like it's still the early 90s or something. Say what you will about automated installers, but at least they usually have sensible defaults if you just want to bash OK until stuff starts happening...
-
No, but if you're a student, you can get 5 free private repos from here:

Well, I personally disagree with Debian's default partition sizes when you tell it "just create an LVM with separate partitions and get on with it!"
/var
and/
are absolutely tiny. Yes, it will put/usr
and/etc
on their own partitions, but you're kinda boned if you want to use/opt
for example without extra fiddling. Also, small
/var
was a great idea guys! No, I won't complain about databases being stored there by default if you install any kind of RDBMS, but/var/cache/apt/archives
kinda lives there...Coincidentally, my only regret right now is being too lazy to back up my
/home
and not setting up LVM...
-
Maybe that wasn't the best example then.
But just follow this 17 step instruction guide and you could have your own Arch installation up and running in a couple of days! You could!

That's the true content of the apology letter the swedish king sent to Saudi Arabia:
On behalf of the swedish nation we apologise for this PewDiePie character. We meant no insult and we hope that, given time, normal relations might resume.
Signed, the knig [sic] of Sweden.

Status: Confused. Didn't GitHub have one private repo as a part of the free plan before?
AFAIK, GitHub has never had free private repos.
Maybe it was some kind of limited-time promotion?
-
No that's good, it gives you a conversation piece. Next time you see him at a dinner party or whatever, you can just start screaming:
Rape rape! Rape! Rape the plates! Rape the salad! Oh my God the salad is raping me I'm being raped! RAPE! RAPE THE TURKEY I RAPE YOU TURKEY!
And he'll crack-up, guaranteed.
-
Maybe it was some kind of limited-time promotion?
Might be. I remember it advertising that to me, but now it seems to be gone.
Oh well, BitBucket it is.

Update: The UK police force does not have the power to deal with noise complaints.

Who do you call then? Batman?
EDIT: wait a minute, the UK has one single national police force? Do they wear brown shirts, by chance?
-
Bang on the wall till they take the hint?

Who do you call then? Batman?
Either that, or wait until the council offices are open so I can phone them. Which will be normal office hours tomorrow. When I'll be at work.
@blakeyrat said:EDIT: wait a minute, the UK has one single national police force?
IIRC, it's 43 spread across the country. But they all apply the same laws, more or less.
@tar said:Bang on the wall till they take the hint?
May not have to: sanity might have just prevailed.

The UK police force does not have the power to deal with noise complaints.
I've been at a house when the Police have turned up for a noise complaint.
It's breach of the peace or whatever.

Did that help? I think I had "interesting" problems on Debian as well once, but not sure if it was Tomcat or the application.

IIRC, it's 43 spread across the country. But they all apply the same laws, more or less.
They also all have the power to arrest etc anywhere in the country, not just in their own area.
I've been at a house when the Police have turned up for a noise complaint. It's breach of the peace or whatever.
Noise complaints in general are considered an environmental health issue, not a crime. It can amount to Breach of the Peace, but most noise complaints are merely a Nuisance, and the responsibility of the Local Authority.
