"good code"
I mean....
Good game code is totally fucked.
Case in point: by now there’s at least three dozen YouTube videos explaining how Carmack’s fast inverse square root code worked.

Status: Broke the integration tests by getting the length of a buffer wrong (by calculating it at the wrong time). No overruns, just an exception. Oh well, easily fixed... or would have been if my coworkers hadn't trimmed exactly the stack frames I needed to look at from the reported trace. Fortunately I could just look at the output of the test job which had the full thing.

The reason Gmail got popular in the first place was because they were much better than both Yahoo and Hotmail specifically, at the time. And except for mandatory phone number verification, Gmail didn't really get any worse than it used to.
One of, if not the biggest thing at the time, was offering a shitload more storage space. Hotmail and Yahoo would let you have 100 MB or something in total, with a 2 MB attachment limit, whereas Gmail started out with 1 GB that steadily increased over time.
Also, the first spam filter that 1) actually works, and 2) doesn't come with first-party spam that bypasses the filter.

@Benjamin-Hall said in The Official Status Thread:
There's a fundamental issue with setting up your own email server these days (at least if you want to use it for outgoing email). You will get picked up on a spam/block list and won't be able to do a darn thing about it. And probably won't even know about it until people start complaining that they're not getting your emails. And that's very much a feature, not a bug as far as the big providers go. Email reputation management is incredibly a dark art, weighted real heavy in the big commercial providers' favor.
I finally decided to pay my provider an extra 48/yr to get a dedicated IP. I kept getting blocked by other mail systems because of shared ip was spamming. Which is a problem when trying to send confirmation notices for the upcoming dog show...
edit: Of course, it's outlook/hotmail accounts I was sending to that bounced.

: DINNER!!! NOW!!!

@hungrier The email that's tied to Azure and the Office 365 packages is different to the email available to normal mortals under the Outlook brand name. Specifically, different lines through the Junk Mail Reporting Program and the non-delivery service tools.
The more you pay to play, the more MS behave sensibly. But if you're trying to send actual transactional emails (order confirmations in my case), to MS accounts that aren't corpo ones, it's a real nightmare.

Status: I know it's not going to work but I uninstalled Age of Empires 2 HD in Steam to reinstall it because it wouldn't launch because it thought a DLL that was already installed was missing. If I knew where my CD for the standalone version was, I'd just play that. It's like a giant conspiracy of everything to just not work for me lately.
Edit: Actually, if I remembered where I put it, I'd play the TMNT collection for Switch. Fuck PC gaming.

Have you been hanging out with @Tsaukpaetra?

@HardwareGeek If I live through the winter, I swear I will take a solid three weeks off work and turn this house upside down. Then I will take two more weeks and turn it upside down again.
-
@Zenith Well, that was a waste of an hour. Downloaded, reinstalled, same result. So I go looking for whatever SxS folder has these fucking DLLs and copy them next to the launcher. The launcher EXE stops barking about DLLs but spins crying about my subscriptions. Fortunately Steam works to launch it. What a clusterfuck.

I, uh, need that....

@Zenith Now after I've sent my navy to level the entire world, whatever dark magic made the DLLs work now has my cursor offset by 50% horizontally. It never ends.
Edit: Also I am ice cold now.

That sounds like a protection racket with extra steps.
That's why the fire brigade is a public service in so many places; private fire brigades are extremely close to protection rackets at best.
Oh man, it was fun trying to get those started. "Don't start the fires yourselves " is a hard lesson to teach.

Status: I'm beginning to think there is no such thing as a DDR3 16Gb 1.5v module that's not registered.
Damn.
-
@Tsaukpaetra that's not what?
-
@Gustav Registered. With a buffer for command pins, data pins or both, to reduce the load on the memory controller, so you could cram more chips and more channels. Server territory, generally.
DDR3 wouldn't have any other sort of 16 GB module. Unbuffered modules for plebs went up to 8 GB per stick, and even those were a coin toss if you wanted all slots used, unless on a later-edition X79.
-
@Applied-Mediocrity said in The Official Status Thread:

Yeah, I'm trying to max out this two-slot board, was being hopeful that a registered module would work, but alas...

@Tsaukpaetra Apparently there existed rare 16 GB UDIMMs after all. Wouldn't put much hope that they POST even if they could be found anywhere, though.

Status: NewEgg used to have a really great search/filter engine. Then they let in all of these 3rd party sellers who see the specs section and put "hur dur itz a kompooter lol."
I am not happy with the manufacturers either. Acer has a line of mini PCs that sound interesting. Except most of the page for it is broken. I guess it's discontinued (Intel stopped making i9s or something...right) and nobody bothered to update the site. They're as bad as Asus, who make a "modular" mini PC where I could never figure out where/how to buy the expansion modules, even though I was well within the "guaranteed" three year supply window.

Status, think I might come to terms with not finishing this year’s NaNoWriMo. The last day broke me and when I came to read it, I realised that I actually have no idea where the story should go next. The original idea I had for this part doesn’t work with where things actually went.
Think I’ll give myself to the weekend to see if I suddenly have an idea for it but… with this particular story it wouldn’t be the first time I got to part way into Act 2 and went “shit, now what” even after revamping and completely rewriting all of Act 1 compared to last time.

Status: What a pain in the ass web applications that have to access external resources are with delegation turned off. It seems dumb that the only options are "impersonate one level" and "impersonate infinite levels" when what I really need is "impersonate two levels." You can't do anything without storing the user's name and password somewhere (like in an IIS session) for everything else that needs it.

Status: bought PureBasic just before bed on a whim. Trying to decide whether to follow in @mott555's footsteps with a writing tool, or something else to noodle around with because I'm bored of doing web and honestly... I was a desktop app writer before I was a web developer...
Not sure my original Windows taskbar replacement code is around anywhere and it probably wouldn't work very well today but you never know...
Also, I should dig out my screen ruler code, I like having a screenruler that was written by me and wasn't cluttered with random features I didn't care about.
Also I feel like having a 'make this app partially transparent' app again. Yes, I know they're already out there but I wrote one of those many years ago and it might be fun to do something smol again.

Cheap-o Silicon Power DIMMs acquired. Now running a memtest, but at first glance it appears they'll work.
Now to see how low I can make a Windows Server 2022 VM go. All it needs to do is provide Active Directory services and literally nothing else.
We shall see what happens...

Setting window attributes (of a window handle)
-
@Tsaukpaetra yes (but see later ), but with a UI to make it easier to do. I might be a hardened console user at times, but that doesn’t mean I want to do everything with a console when it can be 2 mouse clicks away.
