status brain is in full meltdown.
Figuring out translations and why they're not working, and going at what the last people did on this issue took 4.5 hours.
The work for the ticket was already done. Except it didn't work. Oh, and no one realized it had already been sort of done, so had to dig through the repo. Except now I'm supposed to decide on a new paradigm (we like that word here) to do this right. When I can barely figure out how to do it at all.
Oh, and co worker's merged PR broke my local dev environment, because he made database changes that aren't present in my local copy. So now I have to figure out exactly what and replay those changes locally. Fun times with source control.
You're getting warmed up to life as a professional developer I see. Don't worry, you'll get used to it and just not care about all the dumb soon enough.
About the database, see if you can find something like liquibase for your tech stack and enforce use of it. It will make life easier.
-
@Carnage we do use liquibase. But knowing to run it when you pull a branch...

I usually set it to to always run on startup. This both makes you find your problems very early, and makes all databases the correct version for the software. Rollbacks are not planned out or implemented properly in a vast majority of cases anyway, so better to not pretend that it's an option altogether.
Although I have built a system that could be rolled back properly with data transition both ways, it's usually not worth it.

A shitty pop-up on a shitty website?
Chrome was where I first started noticing problems. It suddenly kept crashing with no survivors, as well a taking a long time to respond to mouse/key events. Installing Brave was a very minor improvement in speed but hasn't managed to crash horrifically yet. In retrospect, the sudden bloating of the page file (banging up against the limits of the disk) seemed like it might've been responsible for much of the crashing. There's no reason I should suddenly have an 8GB page file on an 80GB drive.
The effects seem to be the worst on Chrome and Brave but they're also by far the most up to date applications on here due to Google taking control away from even power users. I don't know if they've finally bloated Chromium past what my processor can handle or if there's a real problem somewhere.

Also apparently the German lyrics are different (for original Duck Tales anyway) rather than just a translation of the English lyrics?
Standard practice in dubbing. Especially with songs. It's nearly impossible to do a correct translation that also matches the number of syllables and the rhythm of the music. So instead they rewrite everything from scratch, only matching the general theme. Generally, the more they deviate from the original, the better it sounds.
Example - in Polish version of Duck Tales, the "Duck Tales" line in the theme song is just kaczki - "ducks".

Since when did comprehending the lyrics become a requirement for an earworm? I routinely get '99 luftballon' or the occasional Rammstein song stuck in my head despite me not speaking a word of German
-
@error I never followed Penny Arcade much, as I don't understand most of their comics, only enjoy the really popular ones1. Still I liked their older art style better. (How long ago has that been? Many years?)
EDIT: wait, or is it the newer style?? I don't actually know.1 My favorites are probably funny bear and BvS

For me, I vaguely remember the lyrics in both german and english, but only just barely, and this makes it kinda switch back and forth when I'm trying to remember it...

Seiken Densetsu
I've played Mystic Quest and Secret of Mana. Is that the Japanese original or a predecessor of these?
-
@topspin Google says Mystic Quest.
-
@topspin wait, actually, since the comic describes a 1995 game, what they meant is most likely Seiken Densetsu 3, or Trials of Mana - a sequel to Secret of Mana.
-
@Gąska that one I haven't played, which fits with PA excluding me, but Secret of Mana was one of the greatest games of its time.

-
@hungrier sorry, didn't know Secret of Mana is political.
-
@Gąska It's not the politics garage
-
@hungrier we have more than one garage!?
-
@Gąska The garage is for all kinds of contentious topics
- politics
- religion
- pineapple on pizza
- 1990s video games (specifically, saying they're bad)

@hungrier that's news to me.

I don't know, I think it depends on the language. I was freaking amazed when I found the German version of the Wicked soundtrack and discovered how closely it tracked to the English version while still maintaining the same scansion. I assume it has to do with English being a Germanic rather than a Romance language.

It's very possible, yes. It was just a rehearsal. Yet better than some of the vocal talent I've seen on Broadway shows.

It did ship in one. Arrival is a different category and doesn't count against the statistics.

@Zenith The fan that sounds like an airplane isn't the problem because it's up front by the hard drives. The one on the processor and the two in the back right next to it are fine. I ran the DOS level "systeminfo" command and the processor came up 2080mhz one time and 3200mhz like it's supposed to on subsequent attempts. I really don't know what's going on here that's suddenly such a problem.
Edit: 800mhz?!

Alright, I know it's not really DOS anymore but I don't care enough to call it something else.
Edit: Do you think it's really running at these different speeds or just something dumb about how it calculates? I read something somewhere about having to reapply thermal paste but I've never ever had to do that.
