Solar Roadways?

@Polygeekery There's a popular brand of smoothies/juice drinks/etc that caters to the health-conscious, called "Naked." I can only imagine what a conversation would look like in which one person recommends to a co-worker that they try it.
I don't usually drink naked, but I'll usually get there by the end of the night

I just came up with a foolproof plan for permanently stopping global warming.
It should be pretty easy as long as we go there at night

Only a few months in and literally all of the panels have completely failed and they were only subjected to foot traffic so far.

FFS, burning a little coal will doom us all. Let's fix it by
alteringturning off the sun. That will have far less negative unforeseeable consequences.Yeah, what could possibly go wrong?
- Destroy pesky natural sun
- Use hydrogen to power our own, more efficient, fusion reactors.
- Build giant light bulb next to Earth to provide the same light and heat the sun did.
- Attach system to Arduino with Bluetooth module so you can turn it on or off with your wiimote.
The only question now is who gets to hold that wiimote. I vote Steve.

@Rhywden solar umbrellas on big car parks makes a hell of a lot more sense, but that's not as cool as solar frickin' roadways. Who wants a car that's been kept out of direct sunlight and a big area of solar power generation when you could put the panels as low as possible, flat and with things covering them most of the time?
^ All of this.
Solar parking lots make no sense, because cars will be parked on them during peak sunshine hours. It would be cheaper and make much more sense to make solar car ports. Instead of Solar Freakin' Sidewalks, make solar roofs over the sidewalks and running paths. Instead of solar roadways, spend the money on rooftop solar.
All of this shit uses proven technology, available today, that can be angled toward the sun for maximum efficiency and does not have the technical hurdles of making a solar panel that you can drive on.
But it doesn't have the back patting....

That's the imaginary guy that I blame everything on....

No, guys named Steve are assholes.
Why not @boomzilla? On the up side, we can be guaranteed he won't do any extra work. On the down side, he probably won't do any work.

Looks like the test panels in Idaho got upgraded. They even reset the video feed!

@abarker I give it 2 weeks this time.
-
@abarker I noticed the page says
Solar Roadway’s hope is to have their first manufacturing facility here in Sandpoint, and support the local economy with job creation.
If the panels break every few weeks, that will mean a shitton of jobs making and installing them. It's basic economics, people!

Well, the stream is already dead.

@Polygeekery WOMM:
-
It is back. We can continue to watch
the Solar Freakin' Roadways capture clean solar energya bunch of blinking LEDs that consume power and do fuck-all else.
-
-
@flabdablet which only adds to the energy deficit they are running at.
-
@abarker it came back. Also, they have expanded their scope:
One week in and they are still blinking. They have beat their previous record by a week.
-
Whoops, looks like Solar Freakin' Roadways had a bit of a Galaxy Note 7 moment:
-
@Deadfast Um... what part of that video actually shows them catching fire?

-
@abarker Oh, turns out that it's turned off for "maintenance."
-
@abarker so it died again? Got it.
-
@Polygeekery
This was a pre-scheduled1 hardware upgrade1about 2 minutes before the panels were going to fail, honest!
-
@Polygeekery said in Solar Roadways?:

Well, according to the video you linked, they did have that little issue with a fire earlier this week.
@izzion said in Solar Roadways?:

This was a pre-scheduled1 hardware upgradeI wouldn't be surprised if they'd tried that line. The only thing is, why schedule two expensive hardware upgrade within two weeks?
-
@abarker said in Solar Roadways?:

Well, they are suppose to be roadways, so they want to be sure they can provide that authentic roadwork experience that we are all used to.
-
@abarker said in Solar Roadways?:
@abarker Oh, turns out that it's turned off for "maintenance."
Wasn't one of the major selling points that you could switch them out easily? So, why exactly do they have to turn them off for an upgrade? Do they only have the 20 pieces they installed?
-
-
@RaceProUK said in Solar Roadways?:
@Deadfast Um... what part of that video actually shows them catching fire?
A bunch of firefighters turn up at 13:03. Not exactly the kind of people I would expect to be performing a "hardware upgrade".
-
@Deadfast That's it? That's the 'evidence' that the thing caught fire?
-
@RaceProUK Yeah, you're right, they must have just been performing an upgrade after all.
-
@Deadfast If a vet had been there, would that have meant there was an injured horse too?
-
@izzion said in Solar Roadways?:
@Polygeekery

The snow shovel scraped too much off the service. Hardware upgrade required. We just won't mention the first part.
-
@RaceProUK No, a vet would be entirely expected. Somebody has to look after the horse responsible for this load of horseshit after all.
-
@RaceProUK said in Solar Roadways?:
@Deadfast That's it? That's the 'evidence' that the thing caught fire?
Do you have another explanation for why several firefighters would be there in full gear? Why they would mess around with the electrical box directly associated with the test installation? I mean, yes, it would have been better if they had been able to get the entire incident recorded, but all we got was a screen grab of the firefighters on scene at the electrical control box.
Possible explanations are few, probably explanations even fewer.
-
@abarker Firefighters do more than fight fires.
In that whole sequence with the firefighters, there's no flames, no smoke, and no evidence of fire damage.
-
@abarker
:conspiracy_man: They're really two employees of $BIGOIL that were paid to dress up as firefighters and sabotage the electrical control box of the demo panels. Which is what the hardware upgrade really is, implementing a nice sign that will politely ask BigOilCo to stop sabotaging the project that will end their evil hegemony over the world energy markets.Filed under: Because a hornet's nest to defend the box wouldn't be environmentally friendly, with all those toxic lead slugs
-
@RaceProUK said in Solar Roadways?:

Acknowledged. So what probable reason do they have for messing with that electrical control box in full firefighting gear?
@RaceProUK said in Solar Roadways?:
In that whole sequence with the firefighters, there's no flames, no smoke, and no evidence of fire damage.
There's also no video. It's a still. Depending on the timeframe, it's entirely possible that the flames and smoke had abated. There could be a faint haze of smoke, basically impossible to discern from the quality of the image, especially since it was snowing at the time.
As far as fire damage, what evidence do you expect to see? If the fire occurred away from the edge of the layout (pretty likely), then you would be looking for fire damage against a black background. Most fires aren't going to be hot enough to melt tempered glass, and scorching or soot wouldn't be noticeable against the black background of the non-functional panels (at least not in the image available). What fire damage would you expect to see?
-
@abarker All I'm saying is two firefighters in a still image isn't enough to prove the thing caught fire. Now, if there was a news article or something to confirm, that'd be something. Until then, I'm just going to assume the video is clickbait.
-
@RaceProUK regardless, it did not even make it two weeks this time before it died, however that happened.
But it was most likely due to catching fire.
-

Apparently this install is their test rig for quality control. If they ever get to any serious production level, I expect that feed to get very busy as panels are swapped out at a rate of several panels per day!

I can just imagine the fun/horror if this were done on a primary artery.
Once again we have 2 hour backups on Route 666 due to road maintenance.

That should be at their office and not in the public and being touted as the first real install.

@abarker
Normally I would say the fun is keeping your funding and thus keeping the lights on.But this is being funded by Kickscammer and Government Cheese, so they don't even have that incentive to worry about.
