Article Discussion Category

@apapadimoulis if you are requiring users to signup, people may not be interested. I think you should do away with the ArticleDiscussion category.
why are you expecting your users to suddenly signup to discuss articles? I believe this platform does not support anonymous commenting, so you may have to somehow implement it. that is the only way how people are going to comment.

Its not hard to sign up. I really don't see it as discouraging like you suggest. Also the nature of discourse is such that unregistered users posting kinda defeats the purpose.
-
I have already signed up, so I am not having much fears. I am talking about other people who almost always comment without signing up.
-
It's worth it just to get rid of the people who like to talk about their CAPTCHAs.
-
And Anonymous spammers. At least they have to take an extra step

Once we go live for reals, a topic will be auto-posted from the front-page and you will have to use discourse to comment. There will still be featured comments that get pulled to the front page.
I liked anonymous commenting, but most people didn't since it leads to very low-quality discussion. I believe Discourse will make the article comemnts much better.

I think you over-estimate us.

I heard the same thing when Blizzard changed their forums to use real names and when Facebook was starting up - the idea that anonymity is the cause of bad comments and community. In the end, it didn't change the level of discourse in those places, what makes you think it will be different here?

The vast majority of front-page comments come from users who may or may not be registered, but choose to comment without logging in, including users who have been commenting for years using the same, well-known pseudonym. I suspect you'll lose a bunch of them.I believe Discourse will make the article comemnts much better.
Based on the quality of forum comments, I wouldn't bet on it.

That's my worry.I hope the tradeoff of having things like, email notifications, moderator flags, and basically all the things that the quick comments system I hacked together don't have will be an overall improvement.

The old Community Server doesn't allow anonymous comments and it's the most civil forum I've ever been a part of. Ergo, you are wrong.

In your case, this is probably factual.

It does make me wonder where the hell else morbs hangs out on the internet is though.

Those tweener MLP: FIM fangirls have a lot of pent-up anger.

Yeah, me, too!
...right?
So is your plan just to annoy them into letting you be a mod again?
Actually, isn't that how we got to be mods in the first place..?

Pretty much. I'm just going to wear them down with my endless persistance. It's how I got my wife to marry me.

It is not anonymity registration is addressing, but drive by laziness. The lazy bored people vastly outnumber the people who care, and can easily drown out everything else.

I've never been to another forum either.

When you met her, did you insist that your first name was "My" and surname was "Husband"?
-
There are other forums? Where?

Probably. I think in my case someone got sick of me continually reporting spam posts when they were an hourly problem, rather than daily/weekly as they have been recently.
