🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
-
You're assuming that God is watching on the sabbath. That sounds like work...
-
I'd use an occupancy sensor. Wait, I do!
Not because of religious reasons though, unless laziness is a religion.
-
And God goes poof in a puff of logic
-
Hmm… maybe @Mikael_Svahnberg should stay away from zebra crossings for a while…
-
What do you actually gain from not having any buttons inside the elevator?
At the very least, there should be an emergency "stop at next floor" button, one that, hopefully, would be used about a hundred times a day until that horrible idea was killed with fire (or they just replaced the elevator, hopefully at horrible expense as a warning to the next ten generations that some ideas
come with too high a priceare just extra stupid.Aside: Did anyone else but me immediately think of this video?

Ever been in a multi-storey orthodox synagogue? You can't operate an electrical switch on Saturday
I remember reading, I think in Feynmann's autobiography, some rabbis talking to him about that, and discussing the idea of hiring Gentiles to be elevator operators on the Sabbath. Obviously they must have decided not to do that.
That's a fairly clever workaround, as long as the building's not really tall, although it certainly brings to mind the teacher's complaint about "if you spent as much time working as you did trying to think of clever ways to get out of it..."
-
"if you spent as much time working as you did trying to think of clever ways to get out of it..."
...you'd be declared ritually unclean and have to spend the rest of the day purifying yourself?
-
I remember reading, I think in Feynmann's autobiography,
I read it there too, just last week.
-
ou'd be declared ritually unclean and have to spend the rest of the day purifying yourself?
Ha. No, I meant something that implies the Jews would have actually taken over the world by now...
-
http://www.sansbullshitsans.com/ ...actually, this is probably a good idea.
-
Total sophistry of course - the user's actions are intended to eventually cause a change in the state, no matter how long it happens after; a true Kosher Switch would randomly invert the state regardless of what someone had done with the switch
When I first saw this, there was a comment thread where people who seemed to know what they were talking about explained this as:
Orthodox Judaism is all about finding loopholes to get around the spirit of the law while staying within the letter. This kind of dickweedery is apparently a good thing, and an ancient tradition going back to Abraham arguing with God
-
Ever been in a multi-storey orthodox synagogue? You can't operate an electrical switch on Saturday, so the elevator doors simply open and close, and the car follows a pre-programmed sequence of floors
Does taking the stairs count as work?
What about escalators? Those flat escalators they have in some supermarkets for shopping trolleys, so that it's wheelchair-accessible. (Yes, I know, they take up far more space than a lift)
How do Jews who are wheelchair users and can't use a manually-propelled chair manage? Do they get an exemption for the controls on their electric wheelchair, or do they just have to hire a non-Jew to push them around or else stay where they are?
-
IIRC it's about "creation work"; turning on the switch creates light, therefore it's forbidden, while going up the stairs just moves around existing bodies, so that's fine.

The story doesn't say what the bear was doing in the woods.

Aside from fleeing from the drunk crazy man?

I've a very important project due in 1 hour and I'm looking for "Pope shitting in the woods" on GIS so thanks for that.

Hmm… there's a cyborg ninja cat with titanium claws, a bear-jew that likes to maul others… and I see talk of someone being shivved too… what chance does a dainty little hedgy have?

He is a bear.

It did work ...

We have a forum nurse. And a couple of doctors.

I'm not as prejudiced to think that a bear can't be a nice person, too.

Maybe we can just point Jeff over there next time he calls us toxic.

It's really not, we just pretend to be.
Also that ain't the half of it.
We also have a mirror demon, a T. Rex Sith Lord, a time-travelling Viking, the entire continent of Australia, and whatever Marcuse is. And an annual week-long contest in being mean.

Well, most of the people who like this place would probably find TCS uncomfortably fluffy. But those who like to muck about playing animal characters would likely fit right in.

uncomfortably fluffy
Those two words don't belong together
I know what you mean though

Ever worn slippers with fluffy lining on otherwise-bare feet?

WAAAANT.
At least for December.
-
Damn it! Foiled by actual work!
I wanted to do that...
Ok, mine would be inferior, I'd pick somewhat sensible colours
-
Well. Most slippers are fluffy inside, presumably for the same reason no-one makes waterproof snowboots. They make your feet sweat, horribly. I finally found some lined with sweatshirt material and have been buying the same kind for three years.
-
Do it!

You propose borked images?

We have a forum nurse.

What's that forum about? I went to the home page but it wasn't immediately obvious and I didn't see an About link right away so I didn't bother looking further.

Chrome.
-
What's borken about them?
-
They are unborked now.
They were broken links before or something.
-
Pass. They were pasted in. The Discurse Oven was probably stuttering on them or something.

*sniff* *sniff*
Smells like burnt muffins.

It's just a forum. It started out being about Cracked.com, when they were planning to get rid of the comment section. Tess started a forum to replace it. But it's just a general place to hang out, now, although we still have a subforum for Cracked.
