🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD

teddy bear (or whatever that is)
It's a sea otter—although the lurid pink fur may not be true to life...

Did Discourse eat a flag?
I flagged it, you flagged it, @HardwareGeek flagged it.
-
I'm told it's only 2.
You, @loopback0 and I have all stated publicly that we flagged. Either someone is lying or there's confusion over which post is getting flagged.
-
I told "HJP" that I meant to flag the same post you flagged, and he said I did, and that I was the second flagger.
-
edit: Meant to reply to the post above that.
-
I'm not saying I don't believe you. Maybe "HJP" was being tricky and meant that I flagged it before you, although that seems unlikely, since I left my time machine at Raymond Chen's blog.
-
Hmm. @accalia, how much did you have bribe "HJP" to "lose" a flag? :)

nothing yet.
but i will if i have to.
-
I haven't done the math, but given the frequency of @accalia 's posts and the frequency with which woosh flags (try saying that ten times quickly!) are handed out, she ought to get one every three days just out of sheer randomness.

And because it'd be funny for a bit.
-
-
Hang on! I was talking statistics, not scripting an automatic handing out of flags!

I wasn't talking about scripting it, merely ensuring it happened
-
We need tdfu as an acronym, though.
-
Funny?! Nooooooooo.

Fireflies?
-
No, the holes for the rain to come through
-
This statement is no longer true. Well, it may still be true that @boomzilla hasn't seen it, yet, but the validity of the underlying fact on which that statement was based has changed.
Nope. Just looked, and I'm still right.
-
How many flags on that post?
-
-
I'm not sure @accalia would risk a flagging like that, knowing how likely we are to award them.

-_-
i've said it before and i'll say it again.
y'all too damn flag happy

Don't hate the player, hate the game.
oh i do. i do.....
but i can follow that advice and still think the player deserves some.... ah behavioral modification therapy in the form of teeth....
but then i can't actually deliver said therapy without prior permission so i'm a bit stuck there.

behavioral modification therapy in the form of teeth....
Fox modification in the form of hounds.

Fox modification in the form of hounds.
and then there's that encouragement to refrain from said behavioral modification too...

Releasing a new edition of your software that gets pushed out via the usual update process and mimics a trojan: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/news/notepad-6.7.4-je-suis-charlie-edition.html
I updated today and it started typing a manifesto into a new file. I was sure this was some Anonymous trojan that got pushed into the update queue, but it seems to be legit. But seriously, if my editor starts typing things like "Freedom of expression is like the air we breathe, we don't feel it, until people take it away from us." automatically, I'm going to assume my computer's fucked. There was no way to know I had updated to a "special edition" from the update manager.
-
It gets better:

Speaking of Notepad++:
The external plugin updater (gpup.exe) under the updater directory does not appear to be the correct version. It will most likely work, but you should reinstall the plugin manager at your next opportunity to ensure full functionality. We'll attempt to use the current version for this operation.
OK, how do I do that? Is this gpup a part of the main application or something else? How do I reinstall it? What happens if I don't?
-
Just click through that. I got that and then I got the update to the trojan-tastic version and now everything seems to work fine. But yeah, it's . I don't want to think about politics right now, I have an article that's due and a day off to go about seizing.

Glad I have NP++'s updater blocked at work.

I thought of a good reason to flag for whoosh. Which of the following is less effort for the would-be flagger?
- Click the flag. Click "Something else." Type "whoosh." Click "Private message."
- Open a new tab. Navigate to GIS. Find a "That's the joke" meme image. Copy the image. Go back to the original tab. Paste the image. Find that Discourse won't let you because the image is too big. Go back to GIS. Find a smaller image. Go back to the original tab. Paste the image. Submit.
Flagging is the obvious thing to do. :)

Bad idea: Configuring X so the numeric keypad always produces numbers regardless of the NumLock status.
It works in GTK apps but does the exacte reverse of what’s expected in Qt apps (typing a number always moves the cursor around).
My favorite behavior is from a Java app, though: Typing numbers work, but typing the numpad - key unzooms the document even when used in a text box.

4 so far. Smells like a troll to me (and @PJH).
So anyone who doesn't want flags on their whooshy posts can appeal the process by claiming they were "trolling"?

Anyone can, sure. The people looking at the flags are only mindless automatons
in bedwhile at work...um...I'm not sure where I was going with that.

-
A pre-emptive <I am trollin' in the raw seems like the correct approach...
-
will it make a difference? NFC
It seems to have done. HJP and @boomzilla let you off that whoosh for "trolling".
-
-
A pre-emptive <I am trollin' in the raw seems like the correct approach...
As stated - raw should not be a "Get out of whoosh free" card.
-
sure. we'll call it that.

A pre-emptive
<I am trollin'
in the raw seems like the correct approach...Convince us you really were.
