🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD

I think he needs more email in his life:

Iit would be so much fun to go over there and troll them by supporting the idea.

Just remember to be careful what you troll for.

Oh yeah, it'd certainly constitute playing with fire.
Jeff hasn't happened across the thread yet...

Why, you....when I get my hands on....grrr....ugh....just you wait!
-
I wish I could star that thread.

I just switched it to "Watching."

There can be quite a delay on emails though. Perhaps the site could open a new modal window when a notification arrives, which could load custom Flash to play whichever sounds the user wanted to hear.

Bonus points for making the screen shake just in-case you've not currently got sound switched on.

pingging sound whenever you get a notification
That's a terrible idea.Do. Not. Implent.

Do you prefer @DoctorJones's and my ideas?

And @boomzilla is erecting a no-fun-zone

I'd prefer you wouldn't troll because you might just doom us all.
-
And @boomzilla is erecting a no-fun-zone
Meta already is that.
That, exactly that!

Having said that, I'd happily accept the feature as long as there'd be a preference to turn it off.

To be honest I'd be impressed if they managed to make the screen shake outside of the browser window.

I'm sure <airquotes>HTML5</airquotes> will get us there some time.

You might be able to do it with ActiveX in IE.

Thanks guys! i'm glad someone else has the same idea as me for once
Are we sure the OP isn't someone from here trolling?
-
Oh shit...
-
Can someone like this post... hold on, never mind.

Wondering why you can't like your own posts?

I recognize that guy, and his history would indicate otherwise. Though perhaps he'll make his way over someday.

I wanted to test the favicon notification thing. It only seems to change for new posts, not notifications.

I fucking hate that attitude of "IMO nothing more of any value could possibly come of this topic, so I'm going to close it".

Although, in this case, they were definitely right.

Not to forget, it was a duplicate.
-
Duplicate topics I can definitely see closing though.
But maybe I'm biased....

Agreed, I just don't think it's ever necessary to curtail a discussion. All you're doing is missing out on the opportunity for some unexpectedly valuable insights.
I've seen too many instances where we've needed to make a duplicate topic when the first topic should have just remained open.
-
-
There are some times when a discussion will just go around in circles because both sides are at an impasse with absolutely no sign of making any retractions of any kind - to the point where any discussion is just pointless.
This has happened here on surprisingly many occasions, usually when certain of the TDWTF luminaries is on strong form. (Not saying he's right, not saying he's wrong but we all know what blakey can be like.)
-
Fortunately, here the topic drifts elsewhere before it becomes necessary to close it.

Pass. You can 'dislike' them though...

I just usually append
Part 4
orPart 7
when they've done that to me.

Manually closing stuff sounds too much like work. I don't like work for the sake of work - quite why that lot are so keen to do it I've no idea.
-
Yeah, but to them, closing stuff reduces work, because that's their ticketing system, too.
-
but to them
I know. They're Wrong™. Especially when a new topic comes up to replace the old whack-a-mole style.
-
They also do "manual shadowbans." Stealth deletes so you don't notice that you're apparently operating out of bounds of site norms.
-
manual shadowbans
That sounds like work.
But I repeat myself...
Personally I'd just prefer to hack the CSS/JS and
{display: none}
all a user's posts. Except perhaps from themselves...

This is one of the most infuriating things that they do. They give the user no opportunity to learn what their expectations are. The rational given for doing this is

it would be wasted effort to try to educate the offending user, they'll just ignore us. Besides, you shouldn't engage trolls. It's funny because instead of that "wasted effort" they instead go around tidying up after these poor people who's content keeps disappearing for no apparent reason, ad-infinium.

I think they just really love wielding the mod hammer
This.
It was Jeff's propensity to wield (in one person's words) his 'nail festooned mod bat' at every opportunity on here at the start that caused me to hand in my 'pre-'resignation.
