On Alarms and waking up
-
when they feel it's important to someone's job that they be reachable, they give them phones
Not always in my experience, but maybe I'm more willing to take shit.
-
I only get up once.
You can schedule several alarms, make a repeating week schedule for exampleI want it next to my bed.
Conveniently the place I want to keep my phone.
They know my home phone number
My land line is downstairs what good will that do? They can call me on my mobile irregardless of where I am if it is an emergency
-

I'm just talking about what I've seen at this company.
-

That's crazy. I regularly fine tune my alarms to the goings ons of day to day life.
My land line is downstairs what good will that do?
If it's downstairs in your house it guarantees it won't disturb me.
-

Me neither ... Only the old folks call on the land line these days.

Those are the people I'd be worried about calling with an emergency.

Even those know how to call a mobile phone when they need me.
-
That's cool. I just like to have one place for my phone to sit at home. Then when I need to grab it when I'm leaving, it's always there. There's no good reason to move it around my house all the time, so I don't.
-
So maybe replace my pod with an Andro-phone...
Well, find out which phones support that. As I said up-thread, the dismiss early notification is something I've never seen on HTC/Samsung/LG Androids, and i just checked my current one specifically looking for it. Maybe it's a Motorola thing.
-
It turns on the radio.
We have this crazy thing these days where many phones have radios in them. My current phone even has a "run an application when the alarm goes off" thing that I haven't experimented with but might fire up, say, NextRadio.
I only get up once.
And you never need a reminder at a certain time? Or get up at different times of day on different days of the week (perhaps you have a day off with a late doctor's appointment, or you go to church at a different time than you go to work.)
-

Yeah, me too, only that place is called "in my pocket". That makes it easy to avoid forgetting to grab the thing if I head out of the house suddenly.
-

I don't think it could play loud enough (and if it could, I wouldn't want it to) to wake me up from downstairs.
And you never need a reminder at a certain time?
Like I said, I have lots of reminders for all sorts of stuff. Putting them on my phone would be a step down from putting them on my computer where they already are.
Or get up at different times of day on different days of the week
Again, yes. And when I need to do that, I adjust the alarm time. I'm not seeing any benefit here.
Yeah, me too, only that place is called "in my pocket".
Ugh, how uncomfortable. Do you keep your keys in your pocket all the time, too? Do you wear a half size too small shoe size so it feels really good when you finally take them off?
-
Stock Android alarm had that since, at the very latest, 2.2.
My phone (2.3.4) doesn't show a notification before it goes off.It does show a notification if I hit snooze though.
Edit to add: Sony Ericsson (RIP, Ericsson)

I thought we were talking about regular "Dismiss", not notification "Dismiss" in that reply chain?

I do both, but I don't get this
Ugh, how uncomfortable.
Do you not wear pants with proper pocket room? I can't see how having something like keys, phone, wallet, knife, or other standard things in your pockets would be uncomfortable.

It can also be a sign your pants are too tight in the waist...

Why pocket? uses one of these:
or if you are a bit paranoid:

I...don't know what to say. Maybe you have chicken legs relative to me? It's not like it's a huge uncomfortable thing, necessarily, but also I may sit around all day in sweat pants or my underwear or whatever, and not stuff with appropriate pockets like I do when I leave the house.
Also, keeping things in my pocket (especially stuff on a key chain) wears them out a lot faster than sitting on a table or whatever.

Oh, great, now that shit is swinging around while I walk. Like I need to advertise that stuff. Or want to look like a middle school custodian. That also looks like more of a PITA than reaching in my pocket and taking them out or putting them in when I get in / out of the car / house.
-
I used to do that for a while; no idea why I got rid of mine…
-
Oh, great, now that shit is swinging around while I walk.
well you don't have to put them on your belt. a purse works just as well. and they do make these man-purses... i think they call them courier bags, that serve the same purpose, are awesomely sized to carry anything you need, and are apparently "more manly"
ike I need to advertise that stuff.
Since otherwise i walk pretty damn silently and have a tendancy to startle my coworkers otherwise i consider that a bonus around the office.
even so they do spend most of the time clipped into my purse.
That also looks like more of a PITA than reaching in my pocket and taking them out or putting them in when I get in / out of the car / house.
welll... having one of those smart keys so you don't need to take them out for the car helps.
as for the house, -shrug- not so much
-

But my pants have pockets, damnit!

I'm sure I'll have one of these some day. We didn't go with that option on the car we bought last year. Wasn't worth the $1,000 or whatever that option package was. Plus, it wouldn't work on my van.
-

No. They are called "pants".
-
But my pants have pockets, damnit!
then use them?
i'm sorry i'm confused i thought we were trying to find a better solution than pockets?
or did i mess up again on pocket sizes?
-
i'm sorry i'm confused i thought we were trying to find a better solution than pockets?
No, I just empty my pockets when I'm sitting around my house. There's no real need for me to carry all that stuff while I'm inside my home.
-
but also I may sit around all day in sweat pants or my underwear or whatever, and not stuff with appropriate pockets like I do when I leave the house.
That may also explain the difference as my normal pant wear is surplus BDUs (pants) so I'm used to lots of pockets meant for carrying things.

My standard "going out pants" as I like to call them, have lots of pockety goodness. Even my shorts are at least cargo shorts. I don't typically keep my shoes on while lounging around, either.

I thought we were talking about regular "Dismiss", not notification "Dismiss" in that reply chain?
Well. It's possible. There seems to have lots of missed communication in this threadI was talking about this:
The default alarm clock on my Android phone sticks a notification about ten minutes before the alarm in my tray, with a "cancel" button on it that will prevent it from going off after all without changing when it's set to go off in the settings.
-

I do this as well.
-
My husband gets up and turns it off and starts making food and I go "murr, cold" and pass back out again until he comes and wakes me up when food's ready
Can I marry your husband?
-
I think that's illegal ;)
-
I think that's illegal ;)
That's what I don't get; polygamy and polyamory are honest yet illegal, but adultery is dishonest yet legal…Yeah yeah, I know, religion…
-
Religion is legal in most places.
-
-
Religion is legal in moist places?! What?

Putting them on my phone would be a step down from putting them on my computer where they already are.
Do you carry your computer with you when you go places, in case you have a reminder for some thing that's going to go off when you're away from home?
Do you keep your keys in your pocket all the time, too?
No, because I don't have a need for them develop at random places in the house.
If someone calls you when you're at home, do you refuse to go into another room while you're on the phone because then your phone would be somewhere else? You're approaching "needing one cane for each hand when yelling at kids to get off your lawn" territory.
-
Do you not wear pants with proper pocket room?
Maybe he wears women's pants--most of them don't come with pockets.
-

Approaching?

You can set the phone down next to you on a table, unless incipient Alzheimer's is making you worry you'd lose it. Except that you can, you know, call it to find it.
Also, your phone doesn't belong in the same pocket with your keys, because it'll scratch the screen, unless you're living in 2005 and still sporting a Moto Razr.

In 2000 I had a Nokia 3310. It scratched my keys.

I don't have a landline. If I lose my cellphone, I have nothing to call it with... :/

my purse.
I'm trying to decide if your persona carries a purse, or if the person behind it does, and which possibility is weirder.

A like is not enough. have a reply as well

Right, but nobody was talking about you carrying "all that stuff". Your shoulder aliens need a refresh or something. Just carrying the phone around is a bit different.
I actually carry mine in my hand from place to place and set it down on a counter or chair arm or whatever, and have learned through experience to remember where I put it so I don't lose it.
-

Back in the Tudor period, that question would be ; everyone had a purse.Well, those with money did, anyway. Male or female; didn't matter.

If I'm away from home then I'm probably already doing whatever it was. But I would certainly have my phone with me, so if I really thought I needed some sort of alarm, it would be right there.
If someone calls you when you're at home, do you refuse to go into another room while you're on the phone because then your phone would be somewhere else?
Sorry, I'm not following the thought process here. You sound like you're trying too hard. Honestly, if my cell phone rings while I'm sitting at home, I'm like, "Who the fuck is calling me on my cell phone‽" Because 99% of the calls to it are from my wife, who is probably sitting on the couch next to me at the time.
You're approaching "needing one cane for each hand when yelling at kids to get off your lawn" territory.
I...don't think so.
You can set the phone down next to you on a table,
Eh, why does it need to be next to me instead of on my desk?
Also, your phone doesn't belong in the same pocket with your keys,
No, phone in left pocket, keys in right pocket, wallet in right cargo pocket. That's the standard layout. It works well because I tend to use keys with my right hand and my phone with my left hand. I like to optimize like that.
Right, but nobody was talking about you carrying "all that stuff". Your shoulder aliens need a refresh or something. Just carrying the phone around is a bit different.
The discussion had moved on to include keys. Which just shows that my shoulder aliens are better readers than yours. Why do I need to carry my phone around the house?

It was kind of a trick question, because he is, in the form of his phone, unless he's using a cell phone from the 90s.
