As I've visited and "read" t/1000, it appears that Posts Read and Likes Received for T3 pull from t/1000, is this by design?
Not that this really matters that much anyway. Minus making a few manual posts in t/1000 and 9 other topics, everything else for T3 can be automated. Whether someone would get banned or trust level locked for doing such a thing is another question.
-
A few of us are part-automated (there's a reason my long name is cyber-harinezumi ;)); generally, those of us that are are also active enough to meet TL3 manually too
-
What parts do you automate? attendance, reading posts, replying to posts, liking posts, flagging posts, annoying blakey, participating in religious/political flame wars, etc.
-
Reading posts (older than 3 days; newer ones I read manually), liking in t/1000 and the Fox Ideas thread… and that's it
Oh, and for when I'm on mobile, replacing Unicode emoji with Discourse emoji
-
is this by design?
The TL3 promotion stuff is core functionality and we have (from memory) the Discodefaults.
We can't exclude /t/1000 from it even if we wanted to.
-
We can't exclude /t/1000 from it even if we wanted to.
Why would one want to do that? Exclude topics from badges yes but people who participate in those kind of topics tend to be the people who will get TL3 with our without counting those topics.
-
participate
Participation has very little to do with T3. Viewed/Read requirements are, by definition, not participation without replies. t/1000 allows even less by having automatic likes and an enormous number of posts in one spot to mark read. Viewing (not reading) ~251 other topics, posting in 10 different topics, giving 30 likes, and visiting 50/100 days.
The only real participation is posting in 10 topics. And for T3, that's discosilly.
-
Participation has very little to do with T3.
Jeff seems to think otherwise. That is what these requirements are there. Reading enough posts in different threads, handing out likes, replying are all part of the general idea of taking part in the community.
Don't be fooled by the gamification, abuse, automation and the likes on this forum, plus some of these settings are set deliberately high or low here because this forum and it's admins don't give a lying uck about doing it wrong.giving 30 likes
There are users where this requirement is a barrier to gain TL3
-
visiting 50/100 days.
As you can tell from your requirements, the biggest show stopper for getting TL3 is usually the visiting part. That is because topics are different on this forum. You can participate without needing any kind of knowledge about the topic. You can derail them without anybody batting an eye.
The /t/1000 ist just another form of that. A giant (de)rail that goes somewhere. You can abuse it if you really feel like you need TL3 and can't get it any other way or you can choose to stay out of it and watch the chaos unfold through the titlechanges. If you subject yourself to the /t/1000, why should we have a problem with you becoming TL3? You suffered enough to know how things are going here..
Filed Under: Also, the only "good" thing about TL3 is topic changes... and we tend to abuse that only a little bit

And recategorisation ;)
@Kuro said:and we tend to abuse that only a little bit
It gets boring after a while
-
that goes
somenowherethe only "good" thing about TL3 is topic changes
For other forums this might be power around here it is just another button to push

pretty much everything can be automated. how much do we actually automate on real people? not much actually.
although @sockbot managed to get to TL3, still could if I figure out why she's not marking topics as visited anymore.
I've been posting the code for the various instances of @sockbot on github
-
@accalia has summoned me, and so I appear.
-

I'm going to assume it's safe to assume that you've done the normal sanity checks like making sure the config is right ;)Is she hitting 429s by any chance?
It's a pity @shadowmod is set up to ignore bots, otherwise I'd be able to check on @NetBot's read stats
-

oh she's still reading everything. Discourse changed something and she'd not getting credit for entering topics anymore.
-
Odd that it seems to be fine for my cyberparts. But then I am genuinely active as well.
I know the @sockbot code has a hardcoded bot-block, but would it be worth turning that off for @shadowmod? When PM'd, that is. No need to spam threads; between us, we have that covered already
-
Yes master Cyber-harinezumi; @accalia's queen, I shall appear as summoned.
-

i think i'm going to have to; right now bots PMing other bots causes very bad things to happen to the receiving bots.

Took me a few tries to parse that before I inserted the;

Anyway, let's return to the subject before this gets to an all-out flirting contest…
The issue with PMs is notifications, yes? Specifically, how they don't get cleared properly.
-
yeah. that be the one.
-
Participation has very little to do with T3.
I disagree, though obviously there are some ways to automate some of that. But then, that's its own sort of participation. And as mentioned, the 50 days thing is really not trivial (but not monumental, either).
Getting TL3 makes this place more fun, IMHO. If you start abusing the limited powers it grants, you'll get chastised and possibly trust holed. Stuff gets more serious at TL4, which is so far not automated at all (and probably never will be).
-
I suppose I have a very narrow definition of "participation." If someone is not actively engaging with others through discourse (the abstract concept) then they aren't really participating with the community. They may be participating with Discourse (the forum software) itself by playing the trust level game and liking a few dozen posts, but that isn't really the same thing.
Now is this really a problem here? No, not in practice. However, in principal, gaining "power" (for some definition of power) in a community without requiring significant participation (my definition, not yours) with the community's members seems broken to me.
-
requiring significant participation (my definition, not yours)
The numbers are configurable for a particular installation. Or do you think the criteria are qualitatively not sufficient or something? You could always crank them up to something ridiculously high and manually curate the TL3 population.
-

Not by design as such, but the requirements for it are 'stock' and not site specific like the badges that do exclude it (compare the nice/mediocre post badges for example)
We can't exclude /t/1000 from it even if we wanted to
I'm not sure, but stuffing it in a restricted category might do something.
Irregardless, there are other criteria less susceptible to gaming in the TL3 criteria that make this Not A Problem.
If you start abusing the limited powers it [TL3] grants, you'll get chastised and possibly trust holed.
Those are two options available, yes...Yet to have one go postal, yet.
Stuff gets more serious at TL4, which is so far not automated at all (and probably never will be).
Last time I looked, speculation/postulation on the subject involved the community voting/choosing on the matter, both up and down.
Not dissimilar (but not the same) as happened here.
You could always crank them up to something ridiculously high and manually curate the TL3 population.
On a new install, maybe. But that sounds like active moderation. AKA work.
No ta, for here.
-
No, they are qualitatively fine. And you are right, they are configurable for a reason. But I digress, the main point of this topic was to point out how t/1000 makes getting T3 easier, IMO too easy. However, blah blah blah, no one cares, CLOSED - AS DESIGNED.
-

Yeah...not holding my breath on that.

Well, sure.
-
to point out how t/1000 makes getting T3 easier, IMO too easy.
I guess. Though Likes aren't that hard to come by around here, really. I've gotten plenty on Meta.d, too (and not just TDWTF solidarity likes). Really, reading enough and being around enough are the most difficult criteria, IMO.
-
But that sounds like active moderation. AKA work.
What do you think we pay you for!? Oh wait...

What do you think we pay you for!? Oh wait...
£50/9 months.
I think the SQL I've molested in that time was worth far more.
More seriously, I recognise your point, but /on here/ it doesn't matter that much that Something Needs To Be Done about it.
At least not IMO, and -it appears- to others.
-
-
Tanks, eye gauss.

-
I jeff'd 11 posts to a new topic: Trusted bot spam split set us up the bomb
-
you'll get chastised and possibly trust holed.
i'm pretty sure that's illegal in at least 15 states.
-
how t/1000 makes getting T3 easier
i don't get how t/1000 really makes it easier, is it really that hard to like 50 posts in a different topic and post to 10 different topics? It's not like the system checks your likes for authenticity against a community "are your likes retarded maybe we should ignore them" meter or anything.
-
I've gotten plenty on Meta.d, too
Exactly, I had TL3 on meta.d until i quit bother to go.
-
You're welcome.
-
I think that if you participate in /t/1000 you should be trustlocked at TL1 and made to sit in the corner and think about what you did.

The Evil Ideas topic is :fa_elsewhere:

Maybe I should start jeffing your posts into t/1000.

All of them? Cause I'm reasonably sure I can produce posts faster than you can move them, if necessary...
-
All of them? Cause I'm reasonably sure I can produce posts faster than you can move them, if necessary...
Nah, just enough to get you "participating" in that thread.
-
There's 3 of us at TL4 (plus the grown ups) and 1 of you.....
Just saying.
-
Holy balls, what is this now, and why are you all so desperate for my presence in that thread now?
All I said to my wife was that piece of halibut was good enough for Jehovah..
-
Also,
-
Power corrupts. TL4+ power corrupts absolutely.
-
Cause I'm reasonably sure I can produce posts faster than you can move them, if necessary.
Possibly. Unless we put your posting On Pause.
