Trust levels and PMs
-
Continuing the discussion from User Trust Levels:
Discourse has the concept of [User Trust Levels][1] whereby you are allowed (or not) to do things depending on your user level.
Your current level can be found in the banner of your Profile Page under 'Trust Level'.
Just to clarify, you still only need to be TL1 to hang out in
super sekret clubsPM threads right? Or do you have to reach TL2 to remove restrictions on how much you can post in them? Asking for a *cough* friend

Level 0 can't send PM's
Level 1 can.The only settings I can see that relate to PM's are these:
-
Interesting... I invited a TL0 user to an existing PM chain and after a couple replies he reported a toaster that prevented him from posting.
-
TL0
-
Yeah, he's TL1 now
-
I remember some discussion on meta.d about this. In particular, @cpradio wanted to allow TL0 to flag or PM staff or something and JDGI.
-
Upon trying to send a second reply:
(And again with a third after posting a second.
-
...if there's a discodaily limit our grand scheme might also be impacted. I'd really rather not try to game him up to TL3 if it can be avoided >.>

Well the flagging isn't happening yet:
-
-
Well to be fair, you can get out of TL0 within 10 minutes of getting the confirmation email.
-
He says it was a yellow textbox over the area when he tried to click "Reply",:
We're sorry, but new users are temporarily limited to 3 replies in the same topic.
Instead of adding another reply, please consider editing your previous replies, or visiting other topics.
Actually, paging @cloak15, this is getting silly
-
I think that's hard coded.
-
Is it all-or-nothing or progressive?
-
Hello, and yes, that's the box I saw
-
Ah - this isn't a PM-only thing, it's an artefact of "everything's a topic":
-
And I think I'll bump that max_images up to 1; it's a bit silly posting as _0 then editing after to dump a screenshot in...
-
So all-or-nothing? The cupcake thread plus a handful of random clicks got him TL1, but @accalia and I each have over 150 posts in that thread so it'd be irritating if he got capped again later on
ETA: And just making sure, "new user" means TL0 not some artifact of time since joining, right? I mean, it'd be disconsistant....
-
Reduced limits seem to appear to apply to TL0 only. TL1->2 related stuff:
-
Well to be fair, you can get out of TL0 within 10 minutes of <abbr title="presuming it gets there. Gmail still isn't getting them. Or rather I'm still waiting on the mails for 0,1 and 2">getting the confirmation email</abbr>.
Yeah, that was part of Jeff's backtalk, IIRC. Still, a TL0 probably doesn't know that, etc, etc. There was a lot of back and forth about the philosophical vs actual experience.

Did anyone bring up the fact that a hard-refresh is needed after promotion? To get things like the flag buttons? (Or has that been fixed?)

Topics entered is the only real problem with setting up a secret PM club >.> Days Visited will happen on its own and if he hasn't hit like yet, he probably will have within two weeks

Eh...don't recall. Here's the topic (locked now, natch):
Final JDGI of the topic:
-
We can add attachments now?
-
-
Your screenshot shows both images and attachments though...
-
The file extensions that are available for upload here are restricted to image types, it seems.
-
I wonder if I can upload a .zip file if I tack .jpg on the end of the filename...
EDIT:
EDIT2: Apparently not in any useful way, no.

I tried, no dice. You may get somewhere by messing with headers, but I was too lazy.
There's also a file limit of 1 M(i)B, IIRC
EDIT: DAHELL? Did they loosen the security? O.o

Sure you can! Provided you make a .zip that can be rescaled (and possibly recoloured) by Image Magick…

-
How about if you take a valid jpg (or gif) file and tack a zip file onto the end? Seen that work on image sharing sites (with gif). Probably though if discourse does scaling and colour adjustment you'll lose the zip half.
-
You could use QR codes - or other such things.
-
Harrumpf. Next up you'll be suggesting base64 encoding and putting in post text.
What's the upper limit of a post anyway?

Progress!

0xf400? Why?
-
Well, that's the WTF.
One of the moderators said that it was because of a specific post someone wanted to make.

Topics entered is the only real problem with setting up a secret PM club
You probably shouldn't rely on it being particularly private though. There'll probably be a full dump of the forums floating around in a few years while @ben_lubar is busy writing an importer for GoForums.
-
It's not private, just secret :)
-
Yeah -- the secrecy is an anti-derailment measure, not a privacy measure. In-Character threads don't respond well to the type of thread-derailments found on these forums.
