New Skype Design (also Skype mobile and stuff)
-
Skype just updated on my desktop and I need a place to vent about how butt ugly it is.
http://skypeblogs.files.wordpress.com/2014/10/mac1.png?w=450&h=317
So here is my problems:
the new contact list entries are even bigger than the already freaking big ones in Skype 6...
Look at it. For half the contacts it's 50% whitespace.... you know who profits from whitespace like that? Freaking phones... but more on that later...The new chat-layout looks like a freaking smartphone chat. More whitespace I don't need, colors that make you feel like you are on a phone, avatars EVERYWHERE and all that.... Who wants that on a freaking Desktop?
So here is my real gripe with it: While they made this stupid ass design, the freaking mobile version of Skype still sucks about as much as Discourse. It didn't update - mind you - for me...so maybe they are fixing things in the far future but so far mobile skype
- Doesn't let you start videocalls or calls with multiple people (can't remember wich one)
- Does not allow you to send a message with enter if a keyboard is connected (tablet)
- eats a frickton of your connection even though it updates messages ~10 seconds late
- DOESN'T FUCKING LOG YOU OUT ONCE YOU TURN YOUR PHONE INTO STANDBY!!!!!!!!!!
Oh my god... I kinda apologize for this but this drives me mad.
I also disabled skype autoupdates on my laptop... so thats safe... but really now.
Filed Under: Feel free to either vent with me or vent against me in this topic... I feel empty now | Feel free to move this to another category if you see fit, whoever reads this and wants to complain! I put it in General for no reason!

You forgot another reason why mobile Skype is awful:
- NOT ALL STATUS TYPES ARE SUPPORTED ON ANDROID, UNLIKE ON iOS
"Do Not Disturb" is being treated like invisible and you can not set your status to it and "Away" is shown but - once again - not settable. Not on iOS though, because it seems like Microsoft hates them less.
It makes me mad.

DOESN'T FUCKING LOG YOU OUT ONCE YOU TURN YOUR PHONE INTO STANDBY!!!!!!!!!!
Uhhh... isn't that kinda the point? So that you get the messages without actively looking at Skype all the time?
Or is there another definition of "standby" in this context I'm not familiar with?
-
Oh that is your problem?
Check this one out:
When changing your status to something on mobile, it takes priority over EVERY OTHER SYSTEM EVER!!!
So if you set yourself to invisible on mobile because the not logging off bothers you, don't expect to ever be online ever again unless you call /remotelogout on the pc.... and even then it sometimes just logs itself back in on mobile...
Filed Under: Discourse vs Skype... which is worse?

See.... that makes sense... but mainly because I suck at explaining it.
See, the thing it really does is: never log you out ever! Let's say you use a tablet that can only connect to the internet via WiFi. Let's say you move out of your WiFi. Let's guess what happens.
The answer is: nothing, you stay online.
I get your explanation and it makes sense. I still would love a mode that actually logs me out, though. Then again, I am just venting so there I goFiled Under: It's the combination of all these mobile issues that are annoying, i think

Have you ever changed your mood on a Linux PC and on an Android phone?
You'll often cause gigantic moodspams on your friend's profiles because Skype can't just decide to take one and copy it over the other.
And Android updates things very slowly compared to every other platform I've used it on.
-
Are you asking me to combine both terrible Skype ports into a giant monster of terribleness?
What Version is the Linux Version on nowadays anyways? still 4?I remember some Linux messenger spamming the hell out of profile views on some Chat protocoll... that was weird... and I liked that program sigh
Filed Under: that is kind of off topic, though
-
More terribleness: The avatars that are used in Android's Navigation Drawer are always terribly outdated, even moreso than the ones in the app itself (which usually update withing a few hours).
I had avatars appear that were multiple months old.

Actually, as far as I remember, for Skype it's sort of a good thing. You want to be online, even invisible, because if you're not, and somebody sends you a message and then logs out, it gets stuck in limbo until the person who sent a message gets back online while you're too.
And status updates in Skype are about as reliable too, tablet, PC, whatever. Kicked your computer's power switch without logging out? You show up as online until somebody tries to write to you, at which point you'll turn grey the moment they hit "enter". At least I think that's the case, again - it had Discourse levels of consistency.

I bet ten bucks Jeff was on the Skype dev team.

Since I don't use voice, I have the luxury of using a 3rd-party client. Life's a lot easier if that's an option.
-
Skype and Discourse sure seem to share a lot of things. It's enough to make you miss Messenger.
-
Ever tried the Metro version of Skype? Most of the time it fails to make or receive a call, and if the call does connect, the other party usually can't hear you...
-
At least for now you can "upgrade" to an older version. Wonder how long that will last before the condescending "Oh noes, $USERNAME is using a really old version of Skype! Please help the poor sod install the latest version!"
-
There's a (shitfucktonassload of) reason(s) why I have this as my Skype status-thingy:
Skype is awful and evil and should be destroyed
-
I had
Mobile Skype is worse than Satan
once. Lots of people agreed!
-
Take this like as sign of agreement.
Filed Under: It's a damn shame because I don't hate Skype... I kinda like that you can log in with multiple accounts

Ever tried the Metro version of Skype?
No, because it demanded that I had some sort of Microsoft ID to work. Belgium. That. Noise. I wanted my existing Skype account to work because that was what all my contacts knew. (I have no idea if it could have worked otherwise; the fail was at the first hurdle.)
-
The girlfriend's computer's Skype updated to skeumorphic speech bubbles and shit a while back, but either she rolled it back or there's a way to turn it off, because it isn't like that now. I just haven't let Skype update.
Modern UI design (which is heavily affected by everything's-a-phone-worms) just loves its whitespace. Too much condensed data is hard.

You could just merge the two accounts into one. Your Skype name won't change.
Or, you know, throw a huge hissy-fit. Either way.

The reports upthread indicate that throwing a hissy-fit (and installing the desktop application) was the right option.
-

4.3, still.

+1 for the brain worms diagnosis -- the kicker is that they don't even use their whitespace to good effect.

That depends what the effect is meant to be. If it is meant to cause eye strain I have to say it's used pretty well!
-
Well yeah, I use the desktop version too. Install it if you want, knock yourself out. But at least have a decent reason, instead of "it uses a Microsoft Account!!!!!" which is whiny baby crying. Especially since Microsoft and Skype have allowed merging accounts for like 5+ years now.
-
BLARGH! My Skype on Windows finally updated to this SMSy crap.
And there's still no way to tell it to follow system sound settings. I'm wearing headphones and I'm hearing "kwops" coming out of the speakers. Because Skype is special.
-
Would you have been less rankled if it would have said "Just a moment, we're Discoproving your Skype experience"?
-
When is it ever going to be finished.
I've been looking at that window for 10 mins now and the progress bar hasn't moved.
-
It's like Santa Clause, you have to believe.
-
This is a great example of why I support open protocols so strongly. Because being at the complete mercy of a single company often results in things like that.
