The Google Ideas Thread
-
So, I wanted to put this in the Good Ideas Thread, but then I also noticed a Bad Idea, too, so rather than post to both, I'm making a new one!
#Good Idea:
Google's open sourced their AI software. The software behind their search, translation, voice recognition, photo identification, etc., etc., programs. As I've discussed before, on these forums and elsewhere, this remarkable software could have profound effects on a broad range of fields and businesses, so I'm interested to see how this plays out now that pretty much anyone can get it.
#Bad Idea:
Fork me on GitHub
This is the phrase they use. @blakeyrat's protestations notwithstanding, this is also a bad idea just because of the phrasing. I'm not sure if the is intentional or if literally no one realized it. Either way, seems like a bad idea to me.
Better, @Maciejasjmj?
-
-
I'd never seen that before. But I generally avoid GitHub, so that might be why.
Still, did GitHub not realize it?
-
Complaining about the technical use of 'Fork' is making a mountain out of a mole-hill. In a non-technical context, yes, someone might get confused and think you are -ing them.
But how often do you 'fork' something IRL? Unless it is a: 'fork in the road'? Most people know that means a split not a
-
It's not so much "fork" as it is the use of it in the phrase "fork me". It's reminiscent of a certain Austin Powers movie.
Also, I think you're overestimating how much I'm actually protesting to this. I just think it's silly and asking for trolling, not that heads should roll for it or anything.
-
Yeah how about no...
Never has any adult thought; "Fork me" means "Fuck me". Instead they thought: "go a different direction than me".
SERIOUSLY, pick a better battlefield. This is not the hill to die on.
-
geeks (used to?) like tongue-in-cheek phrases, to give their mind 2 seconds of fun before work. I also happen to hang some dilbert comics on my cubicle, because life already sucks so lets make it suck less.

Fair enough.

Other tongue-in-cheek names include:

Okay, I think that's all we needed.

Orly?
I've looked at this title for too long and I'm afraid I have to do it
[northern]Fork Discourse...right in its little starhole[/northern]
That's better.
-
Do you have any idea what means? It doesn't mean "you said something that was literally and intentionally about sex".
-
Also, I think you're overestimating how much I'm actually protesting to this. I just think it's silly and asking for trolling, not that heads should roll for it or anything.
You disappoint me. I was expecting more rape culture posts, maybe a crusade about objectifying women.
-
I believe I used the term adult. Which doesn't apply round these parts.
-
Sure it does. It just applies in a different way.
-
We are adults in the sense of

Either way, seems like a bad idea to me.
The official term is fork - what would you expect them to use instead?
I'd wager more people don't see "fork me" as being "fuck me", and most that do might chuckle to themselves for about 1.5 seconds before getting over it.
-
Did I call that a ? I don't see anywhere that I said that particular quote was a . Hmm, nope, didn't say that.
-
Wow, I'm autistic and I'm telling someone else that they aren't getting nonverbal signals. This is weird.
-
Aus-tis-ception? It still isn't over 9000. And I'm pissed that thread is stalled out at 8600...
-
Wow, I'm autistic and I'm telling someone else that they aren't getting nonverbal signals.
In the land of the blind, etc, etc...
-
How do you know it's you that's autistic and everyone else isn't just naturally weird?
-
Complaining about "fork me" phrase is even more braindead than complaining about master/slave terminology.
If we let this trend go on, then Final Fantasy XX will completely get rid off the white/black magic distinction - which has a consequence of not having the player choose between white and black magic.

Well, you clearly care enough to make a whole new thread on the forum as opposed to making a post in one of the preexisting threads or just not saying anything about it.
-
-
-
He cares enough to post. That alone is already too much.
-
He cares enough to be offended when we tell him he shouldn't care so much.
-
As if caring was something bad.
-
As if caring was something bad.
Apathy is one of the goals of this forum isn't it? I mean, we have whole flamewar threads designed to desensitize you to the point where caring is no longer the point....
-
Do you guys really have your heads this far up your own asses, or are you just trolling my thread because you don't have anything interesting to say about open source AI and instead feel like latching on to my pointing out some silliness and taking the opportunity to poke at blakey and strangling it to death?

You cared enough to post it, we cared enough to post saying we thought you were wrong.
That's how discussions work. Even here.
-
I was already posting about the actual topic, so I took the opportunity to comment on the aforementioned silliness. Big whoop.
-

Look, if you wanted a discussion about open source AI, maybe structure your post so that the "Google has this cool open source AI" section is a tad bit bigger than the "tee-hee, they said 'fork me'!" section.
-
It is a tad bit bigger. It's also first.
-
WTDWTF: where we have flame wars about whether we're having flame wars
-
Now it's way bigger \o/
And still first.
-
yes
-
It's also first.
Which makes it even worse, since it looks like a lead-in to the actual crux of the post, or a setup to the punchline.
-
Well I guess that's a philosophical difference. To me, it's more that the actual crux of the post is presented up front, and then afterwards there's a little aside about derpy
terminphraseology.
-
Good point.

It doesn't mean "you said something that was literally and intentionally about sex".
When Ben schools you on grammar...it's extra funny for some reason.

Aren't you an English student or something? This is Writing 101. You start with an introduction with generic information to acquaint ther reader with the general topic, and then you get down to the specific thing you're talking about.
When you have an article going something like:
Omaha is a capital of Nebraska, a state in the central United States. It takes up 130 square miles, and is best known for being the place where the TV dinner was invented.
In Omaha, cow fucking is a major problem. The latest statistics indicate 90 percent of Omaha's population fuck cows on a regular basis, and the other 10 percent doesn't admit to it.
Then the article is about cow fucking in Omaha, not about Omaha in general with an aside of cow fucking.

Paging @accalia to increment the flame counter!

Good thing nobody would ever get offended by a harmless "forking" joke eh?
Not even a feminist in a Python conference.

Paging @accalia to increment the flame counter!
I think the flame counter is out of service since That Thread. We put the damn thing into overdrive.

I am a student who speaks English, but I am not an English major, if that's what you mean.introduction with generic information to acquaint ther reader with the general topic
