Thanks =)How do you guys feel about controllers ?
With win 10 it's time i changed my ds3 controller to something native (ds3 tools is shit).
360 controllers, xbox one controllers, or ?
-
Xbox 360, or Xbox One (whichever is cheaper-- I find 360 controllers are a bit more durable, I've already had to replace one Xbox One controller and I don't use it nearly as often) will be compatible with the vast majority of games.
PS3 controllers work fine with Windows, too, but the analog sticks are in a different place and unless the developer of the game is really sharp, it'll show you the Xbox face button labels (ABXY) and not the Playstation ones (shapes). I know that Slowbeef, for example, seems to prefer PS3 controllers over Xbox ones.
I don't know how well PS4 controllers work on Windows.
-
PS3 controllers work fine with Windows
That's what i have now, and it worked okayish if you had a ps3 to xbox 360 emulator. It seems to have stopped working (at all) with windows 10.
Have you tried ?
This is holding three buttons and both sticks. No reaction at all.
-
Nope, I don't buy Sony hardware. That is because I am not dumb. I did once, and it was... this: http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/p/26504/299623.aspx
Anyway, my very point was:
-
The Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers are officially supported by the OS
-
Games for PC generally will assume you have an Xbox controller and show you tooltips for Xbox controllers.
Even if you prefer the layout/shape of the PS3 controller, you might be better off buying an Xbox controller just due to it being the default. And, apparently, working more reliably in Windows 10.

First time the troubleshooter has given me a valid hint:
All of my ports are usb3 and i have 0 usb hubs laying around
-
That's odd. I thought USB3 was 100% backwards compatible for most stuff, only stuff that actually made-use of the high-speed (like USB3 hubs and portable HDs) needed the weird-o plugs on the "B" end.
Have you tried the controller on an actual Playstation or another computer? It could just be malfunctioning.
-
actual Playstation or another computer? It could just be malfunctioning.
It works flawlessly on the z1 compact (phone) i just tested it on.
The ps2 controllers i just connected with an ebay adapter seems to work fine, the game just doesn't seem to support those...
I even have two 360 controllers on order. They have just not been delivered yet. IT's a month ago i ordered them.. WTH...
-

What are you getting? You can get basic ones at any mass-market retailer (Walmart, Target). Or do you live in a place where those stores don't exist?
-
Or do you live in a place where those stores don't exist?
true.
They cost 61 USD delivered (not current price). Original i presume. If i'd taken the x-one controllers they'd cost around 110 USD. And i don't want non-rechargeable controllers, that's why i went with the ds3 originally.
-

Roughly double what they cost here, but I guess you have to take what you can get when you live in a third-world country that uses funny money like kr.
Edit: Ok, that was weird. @abarker split the topic just as I submitted that. The post I was replying to was still here and showed it had a reply, but my reply didn't show up until I refreshed; then my post was here, but the one I was replying to had been moved. @abarker, this now needs to be Jeffed, too.

Well, there's always Joy2Key. There was also
XInputxbox360ce or something like that that faked a regular USB HID controller as an XBox controller, though that was a while ago...When I was in a market for a controller, I just bought the regular wired 360 one. And it's really good compared to any Dualshock USB clone I've had, though that might not be saying much.
(well, as good as a controller can be - it's been like years now and I still haven't learned to control an FPS game with one. K&M forever.)
-
The free healthcare and reasonable unemployment makes up for it.
Currently my unemployment benefits are roughly 650 usd per week, which isn't fantastic, but it does relieve a lot of the stress of being unemployed.
-

Everything I can find backs up what you said. I can find no reason that a non-USB 3.0 device shouldn't work on a USB 3.0 port. Some examples
It's backwards compatible. Your existing USB 2.0 gear will work on version 3.0 ports and vice versa. You'll be able to maximize your bandwidth when using a USB 3.0 cable with USB 3.0 devices and ports, otherwise plugging a 3.0 device into a 2.0 port or a 2.0 device into 3.0 a port will get you standard USB 2.0 data rates.
Since the new interface has been carefully planned from the start to peacefully co-exist with its predecessor, the connector itself remains mostly the same with the four USB 2.0 contacts in the exact same location as before. Extra pins for the new lanes dedicated to transmit and receive SuperSpeed data are located on the back and only come into contact when mated with a proper USB 3.0 port.[1]
According to the spec, USB 2.0 cables and devices will be backward-compatible with the new USB 3.0 port. The cable, the host device (for example, the PC), and the peripheral device all must be USB 3.0 capable to achieve the 3.0 speeds; otherwise, the connector drops down to the lowest common denominator, USB 2.0 speeds.[2]
So basically, the 3.0 spec takes the 2.0 spec and just adds connectors. Plugging an older peripheral into a 3.0 port should work fine.

Fucking hell, I don't even earn a half of that, and I'm paid my country's average wage.
which isn't fantastic
Oh fuck you.
-
Joy2Key
ingenious but ew.
K&M forever
yeah, but for kids and driving games i really prefer the analogue sticks. And games with weird controller schemes.
See: tales from space mutant adventures.

Hmm, and I thought my utter inability to hit the broad side of a barn in an FPS was due to using K&M, and that a controller would be better. Someday, when I have a paycheck again, I'll probably find out.
-

I know, The PS3 controller is correctly identified, and loads the correct USB HID driver, but no data is coming trough (not even raw data - for the sticks).
I'm not making this up...
and that a controller would be better
Never for FPS games. Pro console gamers were wiped by average pc gamers with keyboard and mouse.

Sorry, didn't mean to boast.
Well, you're earning twice as much as me for sitting on your ass.
Fuck it, you deserve nothing better than having to use an Atari 5200 controller for the rest of your life.

-
Doesn't exist.
Single payer then. The one i'm paying 50% income tax and 25% salex tax for. And import taxes/duties i presume... (ie 50% more expensive xbox controllers)
Atari 5200
Does it work under win 10, otherwise its a point...

The best thing is my reply is above your post

Ok, TIL. I'll go back to blaming it on lag from a barely-adequate graphics card (it certainly can't be my fault ;)), which is definitely on my shopping list when I have a paycheck again for non-game as well as game raisins.

See: tales from space mutant adventures.
(Ahem... actually it worked much better with a touchscreen, like on the Vita it was originally built for. But Rantis completed it with a controller, it's just trickier in some parts.)

Who gives a shit? The point of playing games is to have fun.
Portal 2 is no more or less fun with a controller than a keyboard & mouse.
-

The Washington State unemployment rate (if you've maxed it out, which pretty much any programmer has) is almost exactly the same, oddly. I wonder how cost-of-living compares.
Also the fun thing about the Washington State system is you get a statement every year (and every paycheck) telling you exactly how much money you paid into it, money you'll never see again as it goes to drug-taking losers.
-

I don't remember ever seeing such a statement. I just looked at an old paystub, and there's no itemized amount for that on it.
drug-taking losers
Ibuprofen and zinc gluconate, and I can quit any time I want.
-

??? Every paystub I've ever gotten has had the unemployment tax amount itemized on it.

Get a job, loser!

No. But for games are certainly faster paced on pc some people probably enjoy that...
A kb&m User might have a easier time placing portals. But I agree with you mostly.. I wonder how cost-of-living compares.
My rate was before taxes.

I would almost be willing to be money there's no law requiring that.
-

I dunno. I assume my (former) employer is complying with the appropriate payroll tax laws. If not, it's HR's fault/problem, not mine. ESD didn't deny my claim, so as far as I'm concerned, everything's ok.
Get a job, loser!
I want a job at least as much as you want me to have one.

Typically state unemployment insurance is paid for by the employer, not the employee. Employers might show it as a courtesy.
I know people who work in the payroll industry. If I remember, I can find out tomorrow if WA requires it to be printed on the check.

Better DS3?

Atari 5200 controller
"The 5200 joystick is an odd mix of a non-centering stick, analog control, and a keypad. Prone to breaking, the 5200 joystick works best when replaced by a Wico joystick and keypad."

I played an FPS with a controller only once. I think I managed 15 minutes before I got so nauseous I had to stop.
K&M forever.
-
I played an FPS with a controller only once. I think I managed 15 minutes before I got so nauseous I had to stop.
... how?
Did you, like, have your head connected to the analog stick with a cable system (like that controlling the tail movements on a P-39) so your head moved every time your character did or...?
How the fuck can using a controller cause more nausea than a keyboard? Like... even in the realms of unicorns and fairies I can't imagine how this could happen. This is mind-boggling to me.
Did you eliminate other factors, like for example maybe you were playing waaay too close to the TV screen, or possibly you were using the controller in a basement full of sweaty Italians?
-
This is mind-boggling to me.
Remember, tho, you lack the ability to believe anything you don't immediately understand.
-

I'm not sure how you being money would help with that.

My brain didn't mesh well with using an analog stick rather than a mouse to move the camera. I get the same effect when playing 3d PC games when the camera is keyboard based, including on classics like the original doom. There are more potential causes - I recall quitting half life 2 for it at some point.
-

Meh. I don't really care. Besides, it was processed by ADP. If anybody knows what is required for any particular state, they almost certainly do; it's their business.
Rule 34 suggests there is a job available for you.
I'm not quite sure what you're saying, but I assure you nobody wants to see me engaged in Rule 34-ish activities.
-
-
Ok I'll buy that, but you have to be one-in-a-billion, so I refuse to accept that as a general argument about the superiority of keyboard & mouse, just as you should stop presenting it as one.
-
Here's a specific - The mouse is the highest-performing aiming device in general use. Joystick aim vs mouse snap aim is a terrible joke. If you think differently, I suggest a play-off, until :headshot: convinces you otherwise...
-

My brother used to whoop my ass with a trackball.
Yet nobody interested in finding the "best" FPS controller ever tries, or even mentions, trackballs. That's why I dismiss it as usual "PC master race!" bullshit instead of a serious consideration to find the best controller.
-
in general use.
I have nothing but respect for the trackball and it is indeed, in some ways, higher performing than the mouse - especially in a "track this randomly moving dot" sort of way. But, not widely used enough to matter.
-
My brother used to whoop my ass with a trackball
This only show your brother is better than you at aiming.
-
Not convinced it shows that, but it does show that his brother's aim *+ choice of input device *+ tactics ... was, overall, better. Not a surprising result.
