The FSF's statement on Windows 10

Xaade v.
- To make an incoherent argument that would have something meaningful to add to the conversation, if only more people thought like Xaade.
- To edit a post after the fact, accidentally disrupting people's arguments against the post.
- To end up with conversational paradoxes because of bad forum software.
- To actually become worse at communication, because of some practice (E.G. using bad forum software).
I thought I understood what he said, but then he Xaaded me, and I had to delete my post because now my post looked like it is Xaading his post.
He used to be a good communicator, but then his conversational skills went all Xaaded.
Discoursed v.
- Obsolete. See Xaaded.

I also have no fucking clue what PWolff is fucking talking about
I interpreted that

This would make that point a pseudo-argument.I hoped this was sufficiently clear; obviously my train of thought derails at other points than the average

It's pretty incredibly nice when you have multiple laptops, a desktop, a tablet, a phone, and a console that all synchronize.
Yes.
And NO! My hardware is radically different. Settings for a 4K monitor really screw up on a 10" 1366x768 laptop. (My cmd window font size is at war)
-
The font/sizing settings and such obviously don't synchronize.
-
It's syncing app settings. On my 4k system, I need 28pt font to read cmd. On the others, 12pt. So when I change the default, it syncs. And messes up the other system. And on my 4k system, I use the BIG mouse cursors. I noticed those on my little system.
So syncing some settings is nice. But settings that are tied to physical attributes of a machine should not sync.
-
Quite a bunch of things I don't want synchronized do. Taskbar placement, for one, should really be hardware-specific - especially if you're on different resolutions and aspect ratios.
Also I don't feel that the more volatile settings, like current keyboard layout, should unexpectedly change under you if you switch them on the other machine.
-
You should be able to disable that in the Synchronization Settings, though.
-
You should be able to disable that in the Synchronization Settings, though.
Problem is: sync settings doesn't stick.
I've set mine to not sync ~10 times now. Every time I update or modify my os, I need to check myprivilegesettings to ensure they're not fucked again.

It's like being FrostCat'ed
And... you consider that a... typo?
BTW, that was entirely as valid as your weird-ass definition of a bug, to wit, "behavior Blakey doesn't like".
-
WELL IN THAT CASE the feature is evil and horrible and never should have been implemented and will bring on the END OF DAYS HOLY SHIT.
Seriously. What is the point of your bitching? Either use it or turn it fucking off. Just stop bitching.
-
-
I just don't get what he's trying to accomplish. Ok, you don't like the feature, we get it. So what? Just don't use it.
-
I just don't get what he's trying to accomplish.
The destruction of system and subsequent driving into hiding in shame of Lennart, probably.
-
Their position is no surprise..they don't even aprove of a wide range of Linux distros, and that includes every usable distro in the book, ranging from Red Hat to Kubuntu, Gentoo and even Debian.
And even non-linux software isn't safe Stallman even seems to hate the BSDs (OpenBSD devs were in the middle of a very heated discussion with him after he accussed them of being non-free) .
I'm all for OSS, but using purely OSS software can be a huge annoyance. And using FSF approved software is even more complicated since it would mean, running on either a Leemote (wich seems to be hard to get) or on a custom-made desktop-computer-frankenstein from the past century. The list of things that according to them "limit your freedom" keeps a vast ammount of useful software out.
Regarding security, it's better if security-critical parts of an operating system can be audited and that's something you can't do in Windows. However if this is not done propperly you can end up pretty screwed (like Debian's problem with the random number generator when they patched it to quiet a valgrind warning). This has however been done right. Just check out OpenBSD, one of the most (if not the most) secure OS's one earth, and it's open source.
-
I just don't get what he's trying to accomplish.
I think he's venting his frustration. But your confusion is understandable. It's just not the sort of thing you would inflict on others.
-

This would make that point a pseudo-argument.In what way? Microsoft is in the process of making core .NET open source. They've already contributed a bunch of code to Mono.
-
core .NET open source
How much of that is confirmed to be part of the Windows kernel? Or of, say, the IP stack?
(This is not entirely a rhetorical question, I really don't know, but I supposed it is negligible. Except for the Shared Source Initiative, but this is definitively not for the general public.)

Where's the break between syllables?

Have you checked the "sync

-
Have you checked the "sync sync settings" checkbox?
Yep.
After installing 10 correctly (and keeping my defaults), the following reboot reset them to "microsoft defaults". So much for keeping my shit the way it was supposed to be. sigh
-
also:
So if i change my region i can't use shit i've purchased? That's just unacceptable.
-
Rant: I think you mean videos and *ick pictures. Yes I love/hate it when they automatically go to the cloud (cough someone else's computer) from my android device.
Just imagine your kids browsing the web and finding a random photo of his parents trying various sex toys.
Gosh - now I am getting push notifications on my TV. Samsung - can you please leave me alone!
-
So if i change my region i can't use shit i've purchased? That's just unacceptable.
Well, for the movies, music and other stuff, that isn't Microsoft's fault but rather the publisher's.
-
Seriously. What is the point of your bitching? Either use it or turn it fucking off. Just stop bitching.
He probably did turn it off.

None, as far as I know, but then OpenSSL isn't part of the kernel, either, so what is your point? Vulnerabilities in MISL are still vulnerabilities.
-

I disagree.
@Fly on the wall - back room camera said:MS: "We want to sell your stuff"
Publisher: conditions... "and once you've purchased stuff you cannot legally move your stuff".
MS: "LOL.. NO... Change the last condition or there is no deal"
Publisher: ".... .... OK, we've changed our minds, scrap that condition."
I mean, if they cared enough they'd be able to reach an agreement where this is possible. It's possible with physical media, and that's surely harder to transfer than digital.
-
Firefox is whining again: https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2015/07/30/an-open-letter-to-microsofts-ceo-dont-roll-back-the-clock-on-choice-and-control/
There have been reports that Chrome is handled okay so maybe Firefox wasn't setting something properly.
edit: sorry, that was meant generally, not as a reply.
-
Don't think so. What you're demanding amounts to a borderless access to media.
That's something bigger players have had their problems with.
-
-
That's something bigger players have had their problems with.
It works for steam.
It's only not working because they don't care.
-
now I am getting push notifications on my TV. Samsung - can you please leave me alone!
-
Right. That's why the EU has to be involved to force the media companies to at least remove the borders inside the EU.
Because it's so frickin' easy.
-
Because it's so frickin' easy.
It works for physical media.
It works for games.
So clearly it's not impossible.
Why then is it not possible ? Does the stakeholders care ? IMO: Only the publishers care, and they just want to keep the current system.
If say the big sellers cared it could be solved. That's if the publishers want to sell their shit - and i'll admit they are somewhat retarded.
Doesn't apple have global media ? As in - if you've bought it it's yours forever, wherever
-
Listen, there's a "may" in there. Before you blow your gasket completely.
-
Before you blow your gasket completely.
I'm just disappointed. Things should get better with time, not worse. It makes zero sense to me that things were better when we fucked around with analog/physical media.
-
And, just by the way, have you tried to trade a game on Steam between certain countries?
I wouldn't be so sure that this is a solved problem...
-
Great. That was "fixed". Dad's not mad he's disappointed...
-
Why then is it not possible ?
Because there's a group of companies that really want to keep the ability to do differentiated releases of products across the world. Some things are by language, but that's not the real blocker; the issue is that they want to use differentiated contracts and pricing between markets in the same language. Despite the fact that this is massively market-distorting. I suspect that there are two languages where this really matters, English and Spanish (with French as a more distant runner up because African contracts are probably already tracking metropolitan France anyway).
I think this is massively stupid, and just makes for more trouble for Big Media in the future, but it's not incomprehensible. Just unsupportable.
Thank goodness for speelchuckeginh orI'dve accaliaad this message to hellafter allt hew ineI 'vead this eveni ng!

I wouldn't day it's just greed. Different places have different cost of life indices. If you price something globally, it will be very cheap in some places and very expensive in others, which will encourage piracy. If you price something according to local prices, you get people reselling from one market to another.
-

That's just promoting market efficiency.

Why was the window (border) style removed ? I keep closing the wrong windows. Give me a contrasty edge ffs...
I can't seem to change that anywhere - except setting it to another coluor , and the ugly ones with high contrast.
This is how theme settings looks:

Fucking hell, we need a Rosie over here for those comics.

OK I have an idea. How about replacing these comics with a link to goatse.cx? It would be NSFL but I don't care at this point.

Arbitrage happens? Considering the results of Kirtsaeng v. Wiley, it's not like they have much of a leg to stand on from a copyright standpoint, anyway...(the "software is licensed, not sold" argument is pretty flimsy with regards to mass-market software, too).
