Someone needs to tell Toni Morrison.
You just had to mention that name. Now I'll be having nightmares about my college literature class again.

No idea who that is.

You frown like that's a bad thing.
I know who Sylvia Plath is but I don't consider my life deriched by having never read anything of hers.

I only ever read one Toni Morrison book, and it was in high school (11th grade?). I think we read Beloved, or maybe Song of Solomon. I can't even remember now, even after reading their wiki pages. I don't recall it being a horrible experience.

My reference not being understood? Yeah, that's a bad thing :(
Not reading Plath? Meh.

Yeah, I thought you were frowning at "not read Plath" not "didn't get my joke."

We had to read "The Bluest Eye." Really it was the professor who made it horrible, all the essays and "deep meanings" we had to somehow pull from a book about a drunk man who rapes his pre-teen daughter and how that somehow relates to modern racism or some other nonsense. Mostly I ended up regurgitating what the professor said with zero idea on where her conclusions came from.
I was already on thin ice with that professor, we didn't get along because at first I refused to parrot her personal or political beliefs, but eventually I learned to just keep my mouth shut so I could graduate. Got a D in her class, just barely passed. She actually docked me a full letter grade for an absence when I'd informed her ahead of time and she told me not to worry about it, so we didn't get anything in writing and then she conveniently "forgot" about it and subjected me to her draconian unexcused absence policy.

Ah yes, the woolier end of the humanities and social “sciences”. Let's be charitable and say that the professor was just a poor teacher.

THAT DOES NOT MAKE IT NICE OR EVEN OKAY TO CALL ANYONE UGLY BECAUSE THAT IS EXTREMELY RUDE
You know, there's "does not conform to standardized expectations of beauty" ugly. There's even "was in a horrible accident" ugly. As funny as it is to make fun of them, it's still pretty rude to call them ugly.
But then there's "working at it" ugly. There's "Dennis Leary's female clone decanted 50 years after his birth and then aged forward to match" ugly. At that point we need to know what happened so that future generations know what not to do.

Sylvia Plath.
Hey, I read The Bell Jar quite a while ago. It was... actually pretty decent.
-
Sure, she's a great writer, but my god is her stuff depressing.

It's like saying "Sure, Joyce is good, but man does he have problems with getting to the point".
