I often get the opposite feeling - thinking how smart I am, then figuring that holy shit, there are 7 billion of people like me, and lots if not most of them are even smarter.

Yes, of course there's a minimum value. By the definition of IQ, it can't be below zero.And yes, I have worked in retail. I hated it. (It's also where I learned an important lesson: never accept a job from someone who takes a call during the interview and proceeds to tell a Significant Other about how he's quitting. For some reason we aren't born knowing this, although I'll admit to having had a common sense failure.)

People like to depress themselves by thinking about how many low- or average-intelligence people there are. Imo, a far more effective way to depress oneself would be to observe what absolute god damn morons people with high iq tend to be.
The thing that distinguishes humans from other animals is that we are too stupid to be dumb(*) animals. They are smart enough to run away from fire, floods, collapsing buildings, and so on. Humans? Not so much.(*) Yes, I know that the "dumb" in "dumb animals" doesn't mean "pathologically stupid", but the original sense, "mute" or "not able to speak".

heard it was possible to improve IQ by sticking your head in an operating microwave oven for a minute or two. Ms. flabdablet won't let me disable the safety door switch on ours to try it out. It's the right brand9 and everything!

You can test that by sticking it in a microwave oven on High. If there's metal in it, sparks will probably come out.
