My backups are pretty much 50/50 "device failure" to "I fuck up and hit delete". RAID (helps!) to solve the first 50% of the problem but is useless for the second 50%.
I hear that, done that myself too on occasion.
@i dunno some guy i met in the pub said:
Show me something foolproof and i'll show you a bigger fool.

And it's still possible for a rogue OS or drive to corrupt a disk in such a way that both RAID drives are simultaneously corrupted. Unlikely, but possible.
This seems to be why people recommend a separate controller, rather than using the mobo RAID: supposedly the former is less likely to shit on both drives.
I realize that doesn't address your second category, but some people think it's good enough. Theoretically you could do a backup by pulling one drive from the array, inserting a new one, and letting the controller rebuild the array. I didn't say that's a good idea, though.
-
"pretty reasonable for decent quality" is a relative term, though. While it may be cheap for an oversized rim, it's still a lot of money. And a very quick google showed I can get a regular wheel for $100-200 for my car.
Everything you say here is true, but they are oversized which makes them expensive, spinner or not. Those $100 wheels will look very cheap and probably explode at the first hint of a pothole or speed bump. You could get steel wheels for less, and they'd at least be resilient to rough surfaces.
there's no good reason for them to be illegal.
They give a very misleading idea of whether the car is moving or not. If you were a motorcyclist you'd understand because it can mean death or serious injury. In a cage you can get away with not knowing.

I've had three drives in a machine fail simultaneously (a fourth survived, sort of). Might have been me fucking up, since it happened fairly shortly after I upgraded/swapped something (broken PSU fan? don't remember) in that machine.
Still, after that, I'm making sure that important files exist in at least one additional place.

I got my hard drive today. I'll install it as soon as I'm done watching YOUTUBES!!!

Are you kidding me? Those are OEM replacements. Admittedly, the site I had was listing teh first few wheels for $200, with a discount to $100. Here's Auto Zone: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Pilot-Wheel/2005-Kia-Sedona//N-jmothZ8iitp?itemIdentifier=468101_831510_0 I'll assume that's not a low-quality wheel. Kiacarparts.net quotes $111 for a genuine Kia wheel.

— RobotsInTheNewsOH SNAP AN ACTUAL VIDEO oh snap
OH SNAP YouTube one-boxing seems to kind of work, except the preview pane is missing the YouTube "play" button.
-
except the preview pane is missing the YouTube "play" button.
Probably to prevent it from streaming a fresh copy of the video for every character entered in your message.
-
I'm not saying they have to show the actual video, I'm just saying they could CSS a play button up on top of that bitch.
-
That's far too much sanity for Discourse.

— RobotsInTheNewsA new Fanfic Friday!!!!!
This is a story which contains both the flattening and the inflation fetishes, the yin and yang of strange sexual fetishes. Also the main character's name changes like 6 times in one paragraph.
-
BTW if anybody's interested in doing a Fanfic Friday stream, let me know. Compared to the game stuff, it's really low-demand. All you need is:
- A decent microphone/headset
- Skype
- Audacity/whatever recording software you prefer
- The ability to Skype and watch Hitbox.tv at the same time
- Sense of humor
- Boooooze
... also awake when I like to record, which is to say pretty late Pacific time. The Hitbox.tv thing is even optional really, I can just pass on the links. Which is usually the hardest thing to find, Anyway, IM me if you're interested.

If you are playing the game, why would you reading a fanfic result in you having lower requirements towards your partner?
Filed Under: After I read My Immortal, I am good with FanFic, though!
-
Because games generally have a lot more dead-time to fill, and the person playing loses half their capacity for saying clever stuff due to multitasking.
I dunno. Maybe it's not more demanding. Whatever. That's not really the point.

5 Google Annexes Canada – 20:24
— RobotsInTheNewsIn all the commotion this morning, I forgot to post this week's Fanfic Friday.

Dat sigh. I can feel your ennui waiting for the loading screen to end.
-
Huh. Due to the ajaxiness of Discurse, you can post without interrupting a playing video.
Also: nice ringtone.
-
It got something right? OMIGOD.
-
It is a long-ass loading screen considering the textures in the game are like 128x128 at most.

I'm not actually criticizing you. I just thought that sigh was a bit melodramatic, and therefore funny. I actually assumed it was semi-deliberate.
-
Oh I know.
And yes, I've played what seems like 47 of those type of horror games, and they're all awful. With the notable exceptions of Amnesia and Machine for Pigs.

That makes Train Simulator and Street Cleaning Simulator look positively riveting.

Streaming some BF4: http://www.twitch.tv/blakeyrat
EDIT: stream over
-
So apparently you suck at BF4?
-
I do. I am better when sober. Not a lot though.
-
When Half-Life 1 was new I played multi-player for a while. One day I wound up chasing some guy around for about three minutes, completely unable to kill him. Eventually I think someone else killed me, or he got away, or he died, and he started bitching me out. Turns out I had forgotten which skin I was using and we were on the same team with friendly fire disabled.
-
-
Actually it was pretty hilarious.

Streaming some BF4 again: http://www.twitch.tv/blakeyrat
And maybe something else if BF gets boring.
EDIT: Stream over

-
Wow! I wasn't expecting much, but that was even worse. WTF, how did they manage to so utterly fuck it up!?
-
Doesn't look too bad, kind of meh metroidvania lite, with crappy humor. You failed to mention crappy health bar and status menus needlessly blocking half the screen.
-
The description of the game on Steam (I played a Desura copy) mentions it's basically a remake of the game Phantis. Take a look at some Phantis footage and you'll be like: "ooooooooooooooh, NOW I get it!"
C64 Longplay - Phantis (last levels) – 09:53
— MontyMole1976It even has the bouncing ball thing with the ski hat. If I had known it was a remake of a C-64 game, I might have... actually played it before doing that stupid let's play.
That said, even Phantis' splash screen art is more tasteful than Ultionus'. Also, based on the long play, it looks like the C-64 version lets you fire your gun without stopping movement.
-
The first time I played the controls worked, it was just boring as shit. I didn't mention that because it's funnier with broken controls.

That tree cutting is still utterly idiotic, with or without broken controls. You'd think there'd be SOME gameplay around cutting trees. Like carefully measuring the angles and trying to hit the spot where it'll drop. Or even a stupid qt during the chainsaw sequence. But no, you just get a crappy animation with a missing character. Stupid.
-
Someone on Steam pointing out that Skyrim "accidentally" includes a wood chopping simulator much better than the actual game that does.
-
As an added bonus, you can actually walk forward in Skyrim.
-
Yes!
You could probably get the true woodcutting experience by controlling Skyrim with the keyboard after giving your Xbox controller to a raving dog with rabies. Since Skyrim lets you use both methods interchangeably.
